Never imagined would speak to Virat Kohli: Fans recall Patidar sim mix-up experience
Manish Bisi and his friend Khemraj recalled the experience of talking to Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers of being 'something out of a movie' after they were given the number of Rajat Patidar in a SIM card mix-up. Manish got the SIM card from a local mobile shop near his Madagaon village in Chhattisgarh's Gariaband district and was in for a shock of a lifetime as the number previously belonged to Patidar. advertisementSoon, Manish and his friend Khemraj were fielding calls from renowned cricketers, including Kohli and De Villiers. At first, the duo saw that Patidar's picture came up when they installed WhatsApp and thought it was a system glitch. However, soon they started to get calls, which they thought were part of a prank from their friends. Later on, Manish and Khemraj got a call from Patidar on July 15, who asked them to return the number. They understood the seriousness of the matter when police arrived at their doorstep to resolve the matter. However, the duo were thrilled with the whole episode, with Khemraj struggling to hide his excitement after speaking to his idol Kohli. "I never imagined I would speak to Virat Kohli one day, and that too from our village. When AB de Villiers called, he spoke in English. We couldn't understand a word, but we were so thrilled," said Khemraj as quoted by PTI. "When Manish used to get calls, he would hand over the phone to me. The callers who identified themselves as Virat Kohli and Yash Dayal asked us why we were using Patidar's number. We explained to them we had bought a new SIM and this is our number."Manish's brother said that the villagers were also thrilled with the whole mix-up as most of them are RCB fans. The villagers are overjoyed because most people here are RCB fans and talking to legends like Kohli and de Villiers is something that cannot be described and even now seems like a dream, said Manish's brother Deshbandhu Bisi."Even if it was all due to a mix-up, these conversations happened out of sheer luck. This was simply a result of standard telecom procedures," Sinha the consent of Manish and his family, the SIM card was returned back to Patidar recently. - EndsMust Watch

Tech glitch: Youth receives calls from famous cricketers after SIM mix-up
Raipur: A technical glitch resulted in international cricketer Rajat Patidar 's mobile number being allotted to a youth in the Gariaband district of Chhattisgarh. The incident came to light when Manish Bisi, 21, a resident of Madagaon village, started receiving calls from cricketers like Virat Kohli, Yash Dayal, and AB de Villiers. The number, which was inactive for nearly six months, was re-allotted to Manish in a routine process, said Gariaband superintendent of police Nikhil Rakhecha. "It was a WhatsApp number and probably not in use for the last six months. As per company rules, a number that remains unused for over six months is allotted to other customers, which might have led to the allotment of the number to the Devbhog youth. We have now returned the number to cricketer Rajat Patidar," the SP said. Manish, a self-proclaimed fan of Virat Kohli and cricket, bought the new SIM card from a mobile shop in Devbhog in the last week of June. Manish's friend, Khemraj Bisi, helped him install WhatsApp on the new number a week later. The profile picture automatically displayed a photo of Rajat Patidar, which the youths initially dismissed as a software glitch. Soon, Manish and his friend began receiving calls from unknown numbers, with callers introducing themselves as various cricketers, including Kohli and AB de Villiers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Treatment That Might Help You Against Knee Pain Knee pain| search ads Find Now Undo The callers, who were attempting to reach Rajat Patidar, addressed the youths by his name. Thinking it was a prank, the two youths continued to speak to the cricketers in a lighthearted manner for about 15 days. The matter escalated when Rajat Patidar, who was unable to use his old number, contacted the Madhya Pradesh Cyber Cell. The MP police then reached out to Gariaband police to resolve the issue. A police team subsequently visited the village and asked Manish to return the SIM card. The SIM has since been sent to Rajat Patidar's address. The youths, who are avid cricket fans, expressed hope that Rajat Patidar would meet them in person someday, calling the incident an unforgettable experience. The Devbhog SHO said that the SIM card has been sent by post. Cricketer Patidar plays for Madhya Pradesh in domestic cricket and captains Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Khemraj told TOI that when Virat Kohli called the number, Manish, who is shy in nature and not comfortable communicating, handed the phone to him. "I spoke to Kohli Sir and thought it was a prank call — I couldn't believe it. Then we received a second call immediately. The calls came after the number was activated, about 15 days after we purchased the SIM card at the end of June. Ten to fifteen minutes after Kohli Sir's call, we received a call from S. Dayal. About an hour later, we got a call from AB de Villiers, who spoke in English, which we couldn't understand. The call lasted just two to four seconds before he hung up. We are both fans of Kohli Sir and want to meet him at least once. Our villagers are also keen to meet Kohli Sir," Khemraj said. "The Devbhog police came to us and asked for the SIM card back, saying it belonged to a VIP. We returned it to them," Khemraj added. One day, a call was received from another number. The caller identified himself as Rajat Patidar. "We took this call as a joke, just like we did with the earlier ones. Rajat kept requesting the SIM back, but we continued to make fun of him. Then Rajat said, 'I'll send the police,' and about 10 minutes later, the police arrived," Khemraj said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). How a new SIM card connects Chhattisgarh youth to Kohli, de Villiers, Rajat Patidar
Raipur: What if a new SIM card suddenly connected you to Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, and an IPL captain? That's exactly what happened to a young man from a remote Chhattisgarh village, who thought he'd just bought a routine SIM card—only to discover it once belonged to cricketer Rajat Patidar. What followed was a whirlwind of celebrity calls, confusion, and an unexpected brush with fame. At first, they dismissed it as a glitch—until calls started coming in from Kohli, de Villiers, and Yash Dayal. Manish Bisi, in his twenties, from Madagaon village in Gariaband district, purchased a SIM card on June 28 from a shop in Deobhog, around 8 kilometres from his village. His friend Khemraj, while helping him set up WhatsApp, noticed the display picture was of India cricketer Patidar, who had captained Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the 2025 IPL season. At first, they dismissed it as a glitch—until calls started coming in from Kohli, de Villiers, and Yash Dayal. Thinking it to be a prank by friends, they even played along—until Patidar called him on July 15, requesting to return his SIM. In no time, a police team arrived at his doorstep. Gariaband deputy superintendent of police Neha Sinha explained that the SIM had been deactivated after 90 days of inactivity and reassigned to a new customer, in line with telecom policy. 'Manish was actually getting calls from cricketers who were in contact with Rajat Patidar. Patidar informed the Madhya Pradesh Cyber Cell that his number had been allotted to someone else and requested to have it back,' she said. The Madhya Pradesh cyber cell contacted Gariaband police, who spoke with Manish and his family. With their consent, the SIM was recently returned to Patidar. 'There was no legal issue or fault on anyone's part—it was simply a result of standard telecom procedures,' Sinha added. For Manish, Khemraj, and their families, the incident has been nothing short of 'a dream.' Khemraj, an ardent Kohli fan, recalled Manish passing the phone to him. 'The callers, who identified themselves as Virat Kohli and Yash Dayal, asked why we were using Patidar's number. We explained that we had bought a new SIM and this was our number.' 'Talking to legends like Kohli and de Villiers is something we can't describe. Even if it happened because of a mix-up, we were lucky. People just dream of seeing them, but we got to speak to them,' said Manish's brother, Deshbandhu Bisi.
