Raipur: A technical glitch resulted in international cricketer
Rajat Patidar
's mobile number being allotted to a youth in the Gariaband district of Chhattisgarh. The incident came to light when Manish Bisi, 21, a resident of Madagaon village, started receiving calls from cricketers like Virat Kohli, Yash Dayal, and AB de Villiers.
The number, which was inactive for nearly six months, was re-allotted to Manish in a routine process, said Gariaband superintendent of police Nikhil Rakhecha. "It was a WhatsApp number and probably not in use for the last six months. As per company rules, a number that remains unused for over six months is allotted to other customers, which might have led to the allotment of the number to the Devbhog youth. We have now returned the number to cricketer Rajat Patidar," the SP said.
Manish, a self-proclaimed fan of Virat Kohli and cricket, bought the new SIM card from a mobile shop in Devbhog in the last week of June.
Manish's friend, Khemraj Bisi, helped him install WhatsApp on the new number a week later. The profile picture automatically displayed a photo of Rajat Patidar, which the youths initially dismissed as a software glitch.
Soon, Manish and his friend began receiving calls from unknown numbers, with callers introducing themselves as various cricketers, including Kohli and AB de Villiers.

The callers, who were attempting to reach Rajat Patidar, addressed the youths by his name. Thinking it was a prank, the two youths continued to speak to the cricketers in a lighthearted manner for about 15 days.
The matter escalated when Rajat Patidar, who was unable to use his old number, contacted the Madhya Pradesh Cyber Cell. The MP police then reached out to Gariaband police to resolve the issue.
A police team subsequently visited the village and asked Manish to return the SIM card.
The SIM has since been sent to Rajat Patidar's address.
The youths, who are avid cricket fans, expressed hope that Rajat Patidar would meet them in person someday, calling the incident an unforgettable experience. The Devbhog SHO said that the SIM card has been sent by post.
Cricketer Patidar plays for Madhya Pradesh in domestic cricket and captains Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Khemraj told TOI that when Virat Kohli called the number, Manish, who is shy in nature and not comfortable communicating, handed the phone to him.
"I spoke to Kohli Sir and thought it was a prank call — I couldn't believe it. Then we received a second call immediately. The calls came after the number was activated, about 15 days after we purchased the SIM card at the end of June. Ten to fifteen minutes after Kohli Sir's call, we received a call from S.
Dayal. About an hour later, we got a call from AB de Villiers, who spoke in English, which we couldn't understand. The call lasted just two to four seconds before he hung up.
We are both fans of Kohli Sir and want to meet him at least once. Our villagers are also keen to meet Kohli Sir," Khemraj said.
"The Devbhog police came to us and asked for the SIM card back, saying it belonged to a VIP. We returned it to them," Khemraj added.
One day, a call was received from another number. The caller identified himself as Rajat Patidar. "We took this call as a joke, just like we did with the earlier ones. Rajat kept requesting the SIM back, but we continued to make fun of him. Then Rajat said, 'I'll send the police,' and about 10 minutes later, the police arrived," Khemraj said.

Kerala young woman's death takes a twist; friend arrested for abetment to suicide, sexual abuse

The case related to the unnatural death of a young woman witnessed a twist when the Ernakulam Rural police in Kerala on Monday (August 11, 2025) arrested her friend on charges of abetment to suicide and alleged sexual abuse on the promise of marriage. The arrested was identified as Rameez, 24. The 23-year-old woman was allegedly found hanging in her house at Kothamangalam on Saturday (August 9, 2025). Initially, the Kothamangalam police registered a case of unnatural death. However, the police stumbled up on a suicide note, reportedly written by the deceased, during the preparation of mahazar on Sunday. 'Based on the accusations in the suicide note, we took the accused into custody on Monday. After interrogating him, we have invoked additional charges against him. The two had been batchmates during graduation at a college in Aluva and had decided to marry. However, Rameez seems to have backtracked and had not been attending her calls or even responding to her messages of late. He also blocked her on WhatsApp,' said the police. The accused has been booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Sections 69 (sexual intercourse by employing deceitful means etc) and 108 (abetment to suicide). He was also booked under BNS Section 115 (voluntarily causing hurt) on charges that he slapped her. Though the suicide note allegedly accused Rameez and his family of allegedly attempting to convert her religion, the police said that 'other than the usual friction when two persons were from different religions, there was nothing much to read into it for the time being.' The victim's family has also since then allegedly raised the question of conversion. The police, however, said the two families have had reconciled to the marriage despite the difference in their religions. 'Even the victim seems to have agreed to convert and her only condition was that she would not stay at the house of the accused. She insisted on moving out on rent, which the accused seems to have stonewalled. That, coupled with the indifference shown by the accused to the victim of late, seems to have led to the death. However, we will further investigate and see if more people are involved,' the police said. (Suicide prevention helpline: Disha - 1056, 0471-2552056)

Kerala Doctor Duped Of Rs 4.43 Crore In WhatsApp Trading Scam, Two Arrested

The Kerala police detected as many as 18 more accounts in the name of various individuals to transfer the money earned through online fraud. A doctor in Kerala was scammed of Rs 4.43 crore after falling victim to a fraudulent WhatsApp scheme. The state's cybercrime unit has arrested two men in connection with the case, according to officials quoted by IANS. The accused have been identified as Mehbubasha Farooq and Rijaz, and they were arrested in Chennai by the Kannur City Cyber Crime Police. While Farooq hails from Chennai, Rijaj is a resident of Perumbavoor in Ernakulam district and has been settled in Chennai. The two accused allegedly ran a scam via WhatsApp, luring the victim with promises of high returns from investments in a fake online trading platform. According to police, the accused added the doctor — a resident of Mattannur in Kerala's Kannur district — to a WhatsApp group in June, where they promoted an online share trading scheme and promised large profits. The victim was asked to send money to several bank accounts under the pretext of a 'wealth profit plan' linked to a fictitious company named Upstock. 'We have traced about Rs 40 lakh deposited by the accused in their accounts. Besides this, the police detected as many as 18 more accounts in the name of various individuals to transfer the money earned through online fraud. The matter is under investigation now," said the officer. He also confirmed that no links to terrorism had been uncovered during the inquiry. Though the trading app would show the profits earned, he found the platform unresponsive and could not withdraw the amount, prompting him to approach the police to file a complaint with the police on June 25. 'The victim was led to believe he was making lucrative investments, but the entire setup was a sham," the cyber police said. The incident came to light after the cybercrime team tracked down the suspects by following the trail of bank account numbers and mobile phones used in the fraud. A deeper investigation led them to Chennai, where the two accused were arrested. The officer added that they are now looking into whether a larger network is involved and if there are more victims connected to the online scam.
