UFC Icon BJ Penn Arrested After Strange Incident Caught On Camera

Yahoo29-05-2025

legend found himself in handcuffs over the weekend after a tense and bizarre confrontation with police, and the entire incident was caught on camera.
According to the Hawaii Police Department, the former champion was arrested late Sunday night in Hilo and booked on a charge of 'abuse of a family or household member: offensive physical contact.'
Cops say BJ Penn was taken into custody around 9:40 PM and later released on $2,000 bail just before 2 AM Monday morning.
The exact details surrounding the arrest remain unclear, but Penn appeared to address the incident in a cryptic Instagram post late Monday, where he uploaded video footage showing multiple police officers in his bedroom attempting to take him into custody.
The caption referenced 'impostor theft,' a term used in Hawaii to describe individuals who impersonate others, including law enforcement, to commit fraud or other crimes.
In the clip, Penn is seen lying on a bed as several officers stand over him with flashlights. The scene quickly escalates, with police telling him he's being arrested for harassment.
Penn repeatedly questions their presence, at one point asking, 'Can we call an officer that I know?' He resists leaving, appearing confused and frustrated, but is ultimately walked out of the home in handcuffs.
As footage of BJ Penn's arrest spread across social media, viewers weren't just concerned with the UFC legend's behavior; many pointed fingers at the person behind the camera.
In the now-viral video, a man is heard filming while Penn lies in bed, visibly agitated as officers attempt to arrest him. But rather than expressing concern for Penn's well-being, commenters online say the cameraman may have made things worse.
'Whoever is recording this sounds like the one who's manipulating BJ and is making him believe stuff that isn't happening and is adding to his already bad mental state,' one user wrote, echoing a sentiment shared by many.
Another commenter didn't hold back, adding, 'Whoever is recording is the enabler of BJ Penn's mental health.' The intense scrutiny didn't stop there with someone else questioning the videographer's motives altogether: 'What I wanna know is who is his supposedly friend filming and why is he visiting here from the mainland with no money.'
Penn is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday for a hearing related to the arrest. It's unclear if further charges will follow or if more footage will be released.
As BJ Penn's legal troubles deepen, new court documents reveal a disturbing family dynamic playing out behind the scenes.
According to filings obtained by MMA Fighting, Penn's mother, Lorraine Shin, was granted a temporary restraining order this week following a series of alarming allegations. The order, approved by Judge Jeffrey Ng, comes after Penn was arrested on back-to-back days in Hawaii for alleged abuse of a family or household member. He must now remain at least 100 feet away from his mother and avoid all contact until at least a June 10 court hearing.
In her sworn statement, Shin claims she has suffered 'extreme psychological abuse' at the hands of her son,and fears he may be suffering from a rare psychiatric condition known as Capgras syndrome. The disorder causes individuals to believe close relatives have been replaced by identical imposters.
'I believe my son [BJ Penn] is suffering from Capgras delusional syndrome,' Shin wrote. 'He believes I'm an impostor who has killed his family to gain control of the family assets.'
Capgras syndrome is exceptionally rare and often linked to underlying brain injuries or psychiatric conditions like schizophrenia. The condition can lead to intense paranoia and delusions, making it difficult for the individual to recognize loved ones as who they truly are.
With the restraining order in place, any violation by Penn could result in a misdemeanor charge and potential jail time. The news adds another heartbreaking layer to an already complicated and public downfall for the former UFC Hall of Famer, as family members now plead with the courts for safety, and possibly, help.
This isn't Penn's first brush with the law. The former fighter, widely regarded as one of the sport's early greats, has been involved in multiple police investigations over the past several years, including alleged bar fights and domestic disputes.
Once a fan-favorite in the octagon, Penn's increasingly erratic public behavior and mounting legal troubles continue to cast a shadow over his legacy.

Take On Me Singer Morten Harket Said He Has Parkinson's Disease

Morten Harket, who for more than 40 years has been the frontman of the Grammy-nominated Norwegian pop trio a-ha, confirmed this week that he has Parkinson's disease. Harket, 65, made the announcement Wednesday by sharing an article written by music journalist and author Jan Omdahl on a-ha's official website. In it, the singer-songwriter said he'd been experiencing vocal issues as a result of his condition, and admitted he was unsure about a return to the concert stage. 'The problems with my voice are one of many grounds for uncertainty about my creative future,' he said. Though Harket said he had 'no problem accepting the diagnosis,' he added, 'I'm trying the best I can to prevent my entire system from going into decline. It's a difficult balancing act between taking the medication and managing its side effects. There's so much to weigh up when you're emulating the masterful way the body handles every complex movement, or social matters and invitations, or day-to-day life in general.' A native of Kongsberg, Norway, Harket formed a-ha with keyboardist Magne Furuholmen and guitarist Paul Waaktaar-Savoy in 1982. Three years later, the band catapulted to international fame with their breakout smash, ' Take On Me.' The song's success was buoyed by its now-iconic music video, which combined live-action performance footage with pencil-sketch animation. Though a-ha never replicated the success of 'Take On Me' on a global scale, the band continued to release music throughout the '80s and '90s. In 1991, they broke the world record for paid attendance at a rock concert when they performed before more than 198,000 fans at Brazil's Rock in Rio festival. Their 11th studio album, True North, was unveiled in 2022. There is no cure for Parkinson's, a neurodegenerative disease that can cause muscle stiffness, impaired speech and uncontrolled movement. The disease can be revealed by a mere tremor of the hand, according to the Mayo Clinic. Furuholmen reacted to Harket's announcement with a heartfelt post on Instagram. Acknowledging he'd known about his bandmate's diagnosis 'for some time,' he said the news 'brings sadness,' but stressed 'there is also a lot of gratitude: for all the amazing memories, for how our combined creative efforts as a band have been so generously embraced by the world, and for how lucky we are that people continue to find meaning, hope and joy in our shared musical legacy.' In his chat with Omdahl, Harket said he didn't expect to regain 'full technical control' over his vocals, but had nonetheless been working on new songs 'that I've got great belief in, and I feel the lyrics, especially, have something of a different aspect of me in them.' United Archives / United Archives via Getty Images 'I'm not sure if I'll be able to finish them for release,' he continued. 'Time will tell if they make it. I really like the idea of just going for it, as a Parkinson's patient and an artist, with something completely outside the box. It's all up to me, I just have to get this out of the way first.'

Olympic Legend And Wife End Marriage But Their Announcements Are Very Different

Ryan Lochte, the swimmer who won six Olympic gold medals while earning 12 medals overall, and former Playboy Playmate Kayla Reid are ending their marriage. Their announcements arrived on Instagram on Wednesday, one after the other, but were noticeably different in tone. 'Earlier this year, I made the hard decision to end my marriage after deep prayer and reflection,' wrote Reid, who has three young children with Lochte. 'I've come to understand that staying isn't always the most loving decision someone can make,' she added. 'For me, leaving was an act of love ― for those around me and for myself.' Reid, 33, did not mention Lochte in the entire post. Lochte, 40, struck what appeared to be a more mutual stance in his message later: 'This past year has brought major changes for both of us as we've come to the difficult decision to end our marriage. I'm deeply grateful for the life we've built together and especially for the love we share for our three children.' He continued, 'Although this decision hasn't been easy I believe it's the right step toward peace and well-being for us both. I remain committed to healing, growth and co-parenting with care and respect as we move forward separately.' People reported that Reid had actually filed for divorce months earlier. The couple married in 2018, nearly two years after Lochte's impressive Olympics career spanning four Summer Games. He competed in the shadow of Michael Phelps but remains one of the most decorated Olympians in the history of swimming. He was also part of one of its biggest controversies when he initially claimed to have been robbed at gunpoint during the Rio Games in 2016, but officials said it was Lochte and others who had vandalized a gas station and were confronted by security guards. 'Martha Stewart aesthetic' is the trend of the summer, according to Pinterest report

It's been 49 years since Martha Stewart left Wall Street, and the lifestyle maven is as influential as ever. According to the 2025 Pinterest Summer Report, the 'Martha Stewart aesthetic' is poised to take over, with searches up 2,889 per cent on the platform. From her vegetable garden (+72 per cent) to dinner recipes (+45 per cent) and chicken coop (+22 per cent), Stewart continues to inspire. 'It's going to be a Martha Girl Summer,' the Martha Stewart Instagram account posted. 'As we've seen, our founder is influencing the influencers, with many embracing her iconic lifestyle by throwing dinner parties, cultivating home-grown produce and raising backyard chickens.' The nearly three-thousand-fold increase includes Stewart-specific search terms, such as 'Martha Stewart chicken coop,' and more general ones that Pinterest attributes to her sway, including 'fresh summer recipes.' Stewart's estate in Bedford, New York, spans 153 acres. When she bought it in 2000, it was 'a blank canvas,' according to a Facebook post. Today, it's filled with rose beds, daffodils, orchards, vegetable plots and a greenhouse dedicated to begonias. 'My father taught me that you can do it all from scratch, starting from seeds or cuttings, and if you nurture them, they will produce,' she said. 'For me, gardening is all about scent, colour, and variety, variety, and more variety.' In the spirit of Stewart's DIY philosophy, Pinterest users are gravitating toward harvest recipes (+680 per cent), urban farming (+374 per cent), flower gardens (+259 per cent), small backyard vegetable gardens (+246 per cent) and garden-to-table cooking (+117 per cent). 'This back-to-basics approach not only fosters a reconnection to nature but also pairs seamlessly with the rise of summer detox drinks, with searches up 566 per cent on Pinterest,' according to the report. As people have started drinking less alcohol, especially young adults, functional beverages have filled the gap. These drinks, particularly popular among millennials and Gen Z, are designed to deliver health benefits beyond hydration and may be infused with herbs, vitamins and minerals, protein or CBD. Green juices for gut health (+316 per cent) — which Stewart drinks every morning — flavoured water drinks (+289 per cent), spinach smoothies that taste good (+227 per cent), anti-inflammatory drinks (+289 per cent) and herbal infusion recipes (+71 per cent) are among the summer detox drinks quenching Pinterest users' thirst. Whether low-alcohol, non-alcoholic or boozy, 'The popularity of savoury cocktails reflects a curiosity for innovative beverage experiences, marrying fresh produce and herbs with creative cocktail concoctions for a refreshing twist on traditional summer sips.'
