Man who blagged his way into Wembley for Champions League final may face jail

Daily Mirror30-04-2025
A man who blagged his way into the VIP area of Wembley Stadium to watch the Champions League final with his young son, rubbing shoulders with the rich and famous could now face jail.
Steven Carruthers and his four-year-old son had photos taken with fashion model Naomi Campbell and heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk, before they watched the game between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund from top-tier seats worth £21,800 'at the lowest', the prosecutor at Willesden Magistrates' Court said.
The 34-year-old dad, from Hull in East Yorkshire, pleaded guilty to one count of obtaining services dishonestly. Rachna Gokani, prosecuting, told the court: 'The defendant involved his young son who was four years old at the time in order to assist his illegal entrance into the stadium. He was wearing a suit for the specific purpose of looking like he was entitled to these services.'
Ms Gokani added Carruthers went on to 'advertise his offending' in a national newspaper. She said: 'He went to the Daily Mail and a football-related publication, essentially boasting about gaining entry – something he said he had done previously. Mr Carruthers was boasting precisely that he met Naomi Campbell and the heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk and other celebrities.'
Quoting a probation officer who met Carruthers prior to the hearing, Ms Gokani added: 'He had no shame or remorse and was clearly proud of what he had accomplished.'
The court heard Carruthers and his son enjoyed an exclusive hospitality area which regular members of the public were not able to purchase. He watched as the Spanish giants defeated Dortmund 2-0 in the match played on June 1, 2024.
Ms Gokani said: 'The most expensive hospitality package available on that day was £10,900 per person. The hospitality area which Mr Carruthers entered is on a hospitality package which basically exceeds that. It's only available for certain VIPs, members of the public cannot purchase it.
"Mr Carruthers himself refer to a cost of about £20,000 for tickets, so he is plainly aware of the levels we are dealing with.'
Ms Gokani said the offending and its subsequent 'advertisement' in the national newspaper posed security risks for Wembley Stadium, and prompted the Football Association to prosecute Carruthers.
Referring the 2020 Euro final mass disorder incident, when more than 2,000 people stormed their way into Wembley, she said: 'The devastating events of that day are why they (the FA) take offences such as this seriously. There are real risks in terms of disorder, health and safety, and the status of the stadium.'
Carruthers, who represented himself in court, apologised after he was told the offence carried a maximum sentence of three years in jail. He said: 'I'm regretful of what I did, it really does worry me about jail, to be honest. I don't really want to ruin my kids' future.'
Lead magistrate Laura Mee told the defendant the case is to be transferred to crown court for sentence as the serious nature of the offence exceeds the magistrates' sentencing powers. Carruthers told the panel as he left the dock: 'I think it's excessive, I've not hurt anyone.'
He will be sentenced at Harrow Crown Court, the date of the hearing has not yet been fixed.

Celtic annihilated by four hurting diehards as Alan Brazil 'driven mad' in astonishing live radio takedown

It wasn't great viewing for Celtic and four Parkhead-daft pundits had their say in the aftermath Alan Brazil says Celtic are driving him 'mad' as his beloved team faced a scathing takedown across radio, TV and social media after last night's stumble against Kairat Almaty. ‌ The Hoops have been widely rounded on for a toothless draw with the Kazakh minnows which leaves them facing a 7,000 mile round trip this time next week with their Champions League playoff tie finely in the balance. ‌ The world media took Celtic, who dominated the ball but did very little with it, apart. And those closer to home have had their say too. ‌ Scots Brazil and Shebahn Aherne, neither of whom have hid their Celtic allegiances, despaired on talkSPORT this morning. Aherne kicked it off by saying: "Shocking performance last night. We had it coming. Worst fears confirmed last night, failing to create chances, a terrible performance, 'sack the board chants around Parkhead, boos at full-time. "There's been frustration from Celtic fans going into this game about the lack of backing Brendan Rodgers has had going into this window, especially after the amount of money they brought in from making the league phase last season, and they players and goalscorers they've lost. "Kuhn, not replaced. Kyogo, not replaced. Jota, out for what we believe may be the duration of the season, not replaced. "I don't want to hammer Adam (Idah), but they don't have the squad. He (Rodgers) needs backing. "A 4,000 mile trek to Kazakhstan and then they've got to come back and play Rangers. I don't think Rangers should be under pressure because I don't think the board have backed him. But they have to beat this side in Kazakhstan." ‌ And Brazil wasn't pulling his punches either. He added: "It's just a shame because last year the Champions League was fantastic. So many great nights. Even the crowd (last night), for a European night was quiet. "Celtic's passing was really sloppy. I'm not saying there was a lack of urgency, but the team from Kazakhstan were buzzing. They were controlled and organised. ‌ "Another thing that drives me mad is when Celtic get free-kicks and corners, I'm like 'any chance of a goal?' Celtic's corners are pants, they're murder. "Celtic aren't out yet, but they've got to go now to Kazakhstan and then come back and play Rangers at Ibrox." The takedown wasn't limited to the radio either. Speaking on TNT Sports straight after the stalemate, former Celtic midfielder Johan Mjallby said: 'Celtic didn't create enough clear-cut chances for me to say they should have won the game, despite having more possession. Kairat defended so well, too. 'You listen the chants about 'sack the board, we need reinforcements.' Yes, but Brendan has clearly said this group, playing these two games, are good enough. They will have another competitive game in their legs so maybe they will be fitter (for the second leg)." And Record Sport columnist Chris Sutton had his say on social media too. He wrote on Twitter: "So many wrong things. Bad idea selling Kyogo and selling Kuhn before the most important game of the season. Replacing neither. Brendan starting with a striker he doesn't want to start. Tierney not lasting and Scales playing at left back. Fail to prepare, prepare to fail…"

Mum shot terminally ill husband and their two children - leaving boy, 3, an orphan

Emily Long, 34, had uploaded a series of distressing TikToks in the lead up to the deaths, detailing her struggles to come to terms with her husband's terminal brain cancer battle A mother shot her terminally ill husband, their two children and then herself dead in a horror murder-suicide - leaving her youngest boy, 3, an orphan, an autopsy has found. ‌ Emily Long, 34, had uploaded a series of distressing TikToks in the lead up to the deaths, detailing her struggles to come to terms with her husband's terminal brain cancer battle. She confessed in her last video - shared just two days before killings - that she and the children were having a hard time with her husband's diagnosis, but that she was committed to overcoming her mental health issues. ‌ Her husband Ryan Long, 48, and two of their children, eight-year-old Parker and six-year-old Ryan, were found dead at their home in New Hampshire, the US, on Monday night. Their youngest child, aged 3, was unharmed. ‌ READ MORE: Toddler becomes orphan after 'perfect family' wiped out by quadruple murder-suicide According to newly released autopsy findings, Emily died by suicide from a single gunshot wound to the head. Her two children were killed after each suffering a single gunshot wound to the head, which the medical examiner ruled as homicides. Emily's husband was shot multiple times, with his death also ruled a homicide. "Based upon the information available at this time, it appears that in the early morning hours of Monday, August 18, 2025, Ms. Long took a handgun from the home and caused the deaths of Ryan Long and her two children, Parker and Ryan, and then took her own life immediately thereafter," the medical examiner told the Daily Mail. "While investigators are becoming aware of various concerns/issues ongoing in the household at the time of the event in question, people should avoid speculating that this event was caused by a single reason or stressor." Police received a call on Monday alerting them to multiple deaths inside the home. On arrival at roughly 8.21pm, they found the three-year-old boy inside the home, unharmed. He is now in the custody of family, with an investigation into the incident ongoing. On TikTok, Emily spoke about the family's journey after her husband was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. "All I want to do is hide under a blanket with my kids, but that isn't healthy for them and it's not healthy for me," she said. "Today I decided I need to make a conscious effort to shift my mindset. I'm getting out of this depression whether I want to or not. I am determined to create normalcy."
