Easterseals Disability Film Challenge Winners Announced At Gala Ceremony
It was in recognition of these hurdles that disabled actor and comedian Nic Novicki created the Disability Film Challenge 12 years ago. Standing at 3 foot 10 and having dealt with several congenital health challenges throughout his life, Novicki knows what it takes to break through Hollywood's glass ceiling and has over 50 film and TV shows to his name. Most recently, he voiced Lego Spider-Man in Columbia Pictures/Sony Pictures Animation's award-winning film, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
The rules of the Disability Film Challenge are simple but the undertaking itself certainly lives up to its name. Contestants are given just five days to write and produce a one-to-five-minute film once the annual theme is revealed. This year's theme was thriller and suspense. The films don't have to explicitly deal with disability but there must be at least one person with a disability either in front of or behind the camera. A total of 123 submissions were received this year from all over the world.
Last night saw the 2025 Disability Film Challenge awards ceremony take place at a special orange carpet event at Sony Pictures Studios located in Culver City, California. Amongst the luminaries presenting awards were two-time Oscar-winning writer, producer and director Peter Farrelly (Ricky Stanicky, Loudermilk, Greenbook, Something About Mary, Dumb and Dumber), Skye P. Marshall (Matlock, Good Sam, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Black Lightning) and Marissa Bode who recently reprised the role of Nessarose Thropp in the film adaptation of Wicked.
The growing list of corporate sponsors is impressive, too. Whilst Easterseals, one of the largest and best-known suppliers of disability services across the U.S., has been the main sponsor of the challenge since 2017 – today the likes of Amazon MGM Studios, NBCUniversal, Netflix, Paramount Global, The Walt Disney Studios and Warner Bros and Discovery all make valuable financial contributions – ensuring the Film Challenge's sustainability.
This year saw a clean sweep of the awards for Best Film and Best Director for Everhand and its Director, Shane Hillier. This dark and somewhat manic depiction features Lee Cleveland, a congenital amputee, as Abe, a one-armed farmer, and Sarah Beth Budd as his wife Edie. Abe purchases a mechanical arm that holds the promise of solving all his problems but instead a nightmare ensues as the couple are terrorized by a ghoulish sales rep.

An overwhelming sense of menace and foreboding is also a notable feature of Day 21 and We'll Meet Again, which won the awards for Best Actor and Best Writer, respectively. The former stars Dashiell Meier, a young man with Down Syndrome, who also directs as a survivor in a world where some type of apocalyptic event appears to have wiped out most humans but spared those with Down Syndrome. Meanwhile, in We'll Meet Again, co-starring and co-written by Danny Kurtzman (Good Bad Things) and Steve Way, a young man with mobility challenges played by Kurtzman enjoys romantic nightly phone calls with a mysterious woman he has met online until matters take a sinister twist.
The other award winners approached the thriller/suspense genre from a different angle. In Emergency Plan, directed by Anna Pakman and starring Margo Gignac and James Ian, which won the award for Best Awareness, raw emotion takes centre stage. The story features two wheelchair users as a couple trapped in their high-rise apartment block in the aftermath of an earthquake, who are forced to make an impossible decision to save the life of their young son.
In the zany Hypothetically, the End, for which director Lily Drummond won the award for Best Editor, two best friends scramble to marry during the dying embers of New Year's Eve 1999, convinced that the Y2K bug is about to usher forth the end of days.
Winners will receive a $2,000 cash prize in addition to a $5,000 seed fund/film finishing grant provided by Adobe to further develop the winning short film and/or to accelerate the development of their projects into feature films or episodic series. There will be significant mentoring opportunities too.
Perhaps the largest reward, though, comes from the exposure. Following his participation in the challenge, autistic actor Nick Sanchez was able to book a role and can currently be seen in theatres in The Accountant 2 alongside Ben Affleck.
There is also gravitas in the collective message. All the Easterseals Disability Film Challenge finalist films can be viewed on its YouTube channel and this visibility is key. According to the CDC, over 25% of U.S. residents live with some form of disability, and yet a study released last summer by USC's Annenberg Inclusion Initiative revealed that the number of speaking characters with a disability in a major film was just 1.9% in 2022. GLAAD also published a report in the same year, which found that only 2.8% of series regulars on primetime broadcast TV (22 of 775) were characters with disabilities. This lack of visibility and representation obscures and sidelines the disability community. While the long-term industry and societal trends affecting this may be slow to change, the ultra-focus and hyper visibility resulting from endeavors like the Disability Film Challenge make it that much harder to look the other way.

Groom and His Dog Share Special 'Father-Dogter' Dance at Wedding (Exclusive)
The groom's pet Australian shepherd, Murphy, "loves attention and loves people, so she was grinning from ear to ear," the groom tells PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW Instead of a traditional father-daughter dance, a groom named Michael had a "father-dogter" dance with his pet Australian shepherd, Murphy "Murphy loves attention and loves people, so she was grinning from ear to ear just enjoying everyone watching her," Michael tells PEOPLE The dance was to the tune of Phil Collins' "You'll Be in My Heart," the same song Michael selected for his American Idol audition in 2020 Instead of a traditional wedding father-daughter dance, one groom had a "father-dogter" dance with his pet dog. Lauren and Michael tied the knot on July 29, 2023, with their beloved Australian shepherd, Murphy, in attendance. In honor of their second wedding anniversary this year, the couple recently reposted clips from Michael and Murphy's wedding dance on the pup's Instagram page. The DJ encouraged guests to gather around the checkered dance floor by announcing, "It is time for the father-dogter dance." As Michael picked up Murphy into his arms, wedding guests laughed in the background. The pair happily swayed to "You'll Be in My Heart" by Phil Collins. For their grand move, Michael lifted Murphy up into the air, causing everyone to cheer. "We love Murphy. She's our best friend, part of the family and everything, so we knew we wanted to incorporate her in our big day," Michael tells PEOPLE. While most couples incorporate their dog into their wedding through signature cocktails or decorations, Michael and Lauren wanted to do something more "special" and "unique." "Murphy's at that perfect small-medium size, where I can still pick her up and kind of move around," Michael explains. "I dance around with her a lot in the apartment, just one of our goofy little things, so we had this idea of maybe doing a father-dogter dance." The dance went perfectly. "Everyone sort of huddled around us, and it's funny, Murphy loves attention and loves people, so she was grinning from ear to ear just enjoying everyone watching her," Michael remembers. "It was super fun." For their dance song, Michael chose "You'll Be in My Heart," which was played in the 1999 Disney animated feature Tarzan, because "it's about the bond between a parent and a kid, even across different species." He also used this "human interest angle" for his American Idol audition in 2020, which was a "big punishment" assigned to him by his friends after he lost his fantasy football league. During the audition, which was virtual that year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Murphy made an onscreen appearance. "I was like, 'I recently got this puppy, and she's changed my world, taught me that you got to go for your moment and seize the day when you can,' " Michael says, noting that he did not move on to the next round of auditions. A video compilation posted on Instagram shows Michael and Murphy practicing their dance lift over time. "The lift they practiced for three years..." Lauren wrote in an onscreen text overlay, adding in the caption, "To this day Murphy still thinks she's the one who married him!" "I didn't realize, that I would be doing a little moment on my wedding day, but when we decided it, I already kind of knew my beats," Michael tells PEOPLE. "I had lifted her in that position countless times before." "He got her comfortable with it," Lauren adds. "I feel like a lot of dogs are less comfortable with A) that much attention or B) with, like, being carried, but Murphy was pretty used to it at that point. I honestly think their father-daughter dance was better than my and Michael's first dance." Murphy joined her owners as they were getting ready the morning of their wedding. A dog chaperone took care of her for the remainder of the day. "It was really special," Lauren says. "I think it was a memory that we'll cherish forever. It was nice to have all of our people, including Murphy, there with us. It was really sweet even to see people who have never met her before get to meet her in person at the wedding, and see why she meant so much to us." Never miss a story — sign up for to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. Lauren and Michael adopted Murphy, now 5, in August 2020. The night before the couple picked up their new pet, they watched Interstellar. In the sci-fi film, Murphy's Law is reinterpreted not as "anything that can go wrong will go wrong," but as "whatever can happen, will happen." With Lauren always having wanted a dog, and it finally happening, she thought of the Australian shepherd as a "Murphy's Law dog." Despite Murphy traditionally being a male name, the couple felt it was a fitting name for their new pet. Read the original article on People Solve the daily Crossword

Rapper Sean Kingston sentenced to 3 years for fraud scheme
Rapper Sean Kingston has been sentenced to three and a half years in federal prison in a million-dollar fraud scheme. The "Beautiful Girls" singer was convicted earlier this year, along with his mother, in a wire fraud scheme where they stole luxury items including watches, a 232-inch LED TV, a bulletproof Cadillac Escalade and furniture, exceeding $1m (£738,000). Prosecutors said Kingston - whose legal name is Kisean Anderson - and his mother used the rapper's celebrity status to get victims to give them products and when payment was due would send them fake wire receipts. The singer apologised to the court before being sentenced and said he'd learned from his actions, according to US media. His mother, Janice Turner, was sentenced in July to five years in prison. The Jamaican-American rapper, who is also known for hits like Fire Burning, Take You There and Eenie Meenie, which featured singer Justin Bieber, was arrested in 2024 in California, where he was set to perform at an Army training base in the Mojave Desert. His arrest happened after authorities raided his home near Fort Lauderdale, where his mother was taken into custody. Federal prosecutors said Kingston reached out to victims on social media, saying he wanted to purchase luxury goods and then invited them to his various homes in South Florida. Kingston promised these victims to post their products on his social media and sometimes offered to refer their products to other "high profile celebrities", federal prosecutors said. But when payment was due for the products, he or his mother sent them fake wire receipts that falsely showed they'd sent over the money, prosecutors said at trial. Authorities said most victims were never paid, though several did receive payment after law enforcement got involved or lawsuits were filed. A key piece of evidence shown at trial were text messages between Kingston and his mother discussing the fake payment receipts, according to CBS, the BBC's news partner. "I told you to make [a] fake receipt," he wrote in one. Kingston's attorney Zeljka Bozanic said the singer was "a soft guy who grew up poor when he rose to fame overnight". He said Kingston still had the mentality of a teenager and didn't know how to run his bank accounts or business. He will begin serving his time immediately.
