Groom and His Dog Share Special 'Father-Dogter' Dance at Wedding (Exclusive)
NEED TO KNOW
Instead of a traditional father-daughter dance, a groom named Michael had a "father-dogter" dance with his pet Australian shepherd, Murphy
"Murphy loves attention and loves people, so she was grinning from ear to ear just enjoying everyone watching her," Michael tells PEOPLE
The dance was to the tune of Phil Collins' "You'll Be in My Heart," the same song Michael selected for his American Idol audition in 2020
Instead of a traditional wedding father-daughter dance, one groom had a "father-dogter" dance with his pet dog.
Lauren and Michael tied the knot on July 29, 2023, with their beloved Australian shepherd, Murphy, in attendance. In honor of their second wedding anniversary this year, the couple recently reposted clips from Michael and Murphy's wedding dance on the pup's Instagram page.
The DJ encouraged guests to gather around the checkered dance floor by announcing, "It is time for the father-dogter dance." As Michael picked up Murphy into his arms, wedding guests laughed in the background. The pair happily swayed to "You'll Be in My Heart" by Phil Collins. For their grand move, Michael lifted Murphy up into the air, causing everyone to cheer.
"We love Murphy. She's our best friend, part of the family and everything, so we knew we wanted to incorporate her in our big day," Michael tells PEOPLE.
While most couples incorporate their dog into their wedding through signature cocktails or decorations, Michael and Lauren wanted to do something more "special" and "unique."
"Murphy's at that perfect small-medium size, where I can still pick her up and kind of move around," Michael explains. "I dance around with her a lot in the apartment, just one of our goofy little things, so we had this idea of maybe doing a father-dogter dance."
The dance went perfectly.
"Everyone sort of huddled around us, and it's funny, Murphy loves attention and loves people, so she was grinning from ear to ear just enjoying everyone watching her," Michael remembers. "It was super fun."

For their dance song, Michael chose "You'll Be in My Heart," which was played in the 1999 Disney animated feature Tarzan, because "it's about the bond between a parent and a kid, even across different species."
He also used this "human interest angle" for his American Idol audition in 2020, which was a "big punishment" assigned to him by his friends after he lost his fantasy football league. During the audition, which was virtual that year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Murphy made an onscreen appearance.
"I was like, 'I recently got this puppy, and she's changed my world, taught me that you got to go for your moment and seize the day when you can,' " Michael says, noting that he did not move on to the next round of auditions.
A video compilation posted on Instagram shows Michael and Murphy practicing their dance lift over time.
"The lift they practiced for three years..." Lauren wrote in an onscreen text overlay, adding in the caption, "To this day Murphy still thinks she's the one who married him!"
"I didn't realize, that I would be doing a little moment on my wedding day, but when we decided it, I already kind of knew my beats," Michael tells PEOPLE. "I had lifted her in that position countless times before."
"He got her comfortable with it," Lauren adds. "I feel like a lot of dogs are less comfortable with A) that much attention or B) with, like, being carried, but Murphy was pretty used to it at that point. I honestly think their father-daughter dance was better than my and Michael's first dance."
Murphy joined her owners as they were getting ready the morning of their wedding. A dog chaperone took care of her for the remainder of the day.
"It was really special," Lauren says. "I think it was a memory that we'll cherish forever. It was nice to have all of our people, including Murphy, there with us. It was really sweet even to see people who have never met her before get to meet her in person at the wedding, and see why she meant so much to us."

Lauren and Michael adopted Murphy, now 5, in August 2020. The night before the couple picked up their new pet, they watched Interstellar. In the sci-fi film, Murphy's Law is reinterpreted not as "anything that can go wrong will go wrong," but as "whatever can happen, will happen."
With Lauren always having wanted a dog, and it finally happening, she thought of the Australian shepherd as a "Murphy's Law dog." Despite Murphy traditionally being a male name, the couple felt it was a fitting name for their new pet.

Nick & Vanessa Lachey's Head-Turning Real Estate Decision Shows How Much They Loved Their Dream Home
As the old saying goes, 'you can go home again.' That's exactly what Nick and Vanessa Lachey are doing with their recent real estate purchase. Let's dial it back to see how the couple went full circle with a 6,855-square-foot home in Tarzana, California. In 2020, the Lacheys moved to the $5.1 million mansion, thinking it would be the perfect place to raise their three children: Camden, 12, Brooklyn, 10, and Phoenix, 8. That was the plan until Vanessa scored a gig on NCIS: Hawai'i in 2021. More from SheKnows Prince William & Kate Middleton's 'Fresh Start' Home Comes With a Refreshing Financial Detail That meant a move to Honolulu, where they purchased an $8.8 million residence and sold their Tarzana estate to tennis pro Naomi Osaka for $6.2 million, per This is where things get a little crazy. NCIS: Hawai'i was canceled by CBS in April 2024, and it was time for the Lachey family to return to California. They bought a six-bedroom home in Encino, a neighborhood next door to Tarzana, for $6.8 million — but it wasn't the dream residence they once had. In a game of real estate shuffle, they put that home back on the market less than a year later because they were able to convince Osaka to sell their old property back to them. According to The Wall Street Journal, the U.S. Open champion made a nice profit on the place by selling it back to Nick and Vanessa for $7.95 million. The media outlet noted that this was a private sale since it wasn't listed on the open market, and Osaka had made substantial upgrades to the property. Osaka added necessary details for any athlete — a 'recovery center' with 'a sauna, a cold plunge, a steam room, and a massage table.' She even had her workout mantras posted in neon in the gym: 'Nothing good happens without discipline' and 'If it was easy, everyone would do it.' Surprisingly, the property did not have a tennis court, only a pickleball court — so it might be why Osaka is on the move. For the Lacheys, though, a return to their old home is a dream come of SheKnows 20 Times Madonna Reinvented Fashion at the VMAs The Best Photos of Madonna & Lookalike Daughter Lourdes Through The Years 22 Famous Women Who Have Played Roxie in Chicago on Broadway Solve the daily Crossword

'TSITP' Fans! Your Favorite TV Boyfriend Just Joined Jessica Chastain's New Horror Movie.
I realize that The Summer I Turned Pretty and the supernatural horror genre don't exactly sound like a match made in Heaven, but one of TSITP's breakout stars, Sean Kaufman, is set to act alongside several other big names in Hollywood for the upcoming horror film Other Mommy. Sidenote: I'm already terrified by this movie, and that's just based on the premise alone. Here's everything you need to know about Other Mommy, coming soon. Where can I watch Other Mommy? Other Mommy is sure to hit theaters soon. Stay tuned for an official release date! What is Other Mommy about? This upcoming movie is based on the horror novel Incidents Around the House, by Josh Malerman, who's best known for writing Birdbox. Other Mommy centers around a dysfunctional family with parents who are constantly fighting, and a young daughter, Bela, who is left alone to her own devices most of the time. Since Mom and Dad are so busy bickering and trying to win arguments, Bela is forced to resort to her own imagination in order to have companionship. The only times her parents actually do sit down to talk to Bela are when they're complaining about each other to her. Yeah. Not exactly what I'd call model behavior from the parenting 101 handbook. Especially considering the fact that Bela is only eight years old! While reading the book, I kept wanting to scream to the mom and dad that they should be airing out their issues to a licensed couple's therapist, rather than their young daughter. It was infuriating to read, but ultimately the perfect framing device to set the tone for Bela's growing need for an 'Other Mommy.' Cue, the creepiest element of the narrative: Bela begins hearing voices in the house from a supernatural entity called 'Other Mommy,' who keeps asking, 'Can I go inside your heart?' (I've never been so terrified in my life, and I've seen Hereditary.) This force becomes a looming threat within the family household, yet because Bela is so young, she doesn't come to the conclusion that 'Other Mommy' is anything to fear. In fact, at times, 'Other Mommy' might even be seen as a source of comfort for her, considering her real mother's neglect. I was wondering why this premise sounded so familiar until I realized how much it reminded me of Coraline. Hem, hem, 'Other Mother?' Yet while the Neil Gaiman book-to-movie adaptation has an eerie but ultimately whimsical vibe, don't get it twisted- Other Mommy is just straight-up horror. Even avid horror readers admitted to this novel being among the scariest they've ever read. Who's in the Other Mommy cast? In addition to Sean Kaufman, we'll see some amazing names like Jessica Chastain, as well as Jay Duplass. Interestingly enough, the script was crafted by Succession writer, Nathan Eltson (I highly doubt they'll be cracking Roman Roy-style jokes in this particular script, though). Here's the full Other Mommy cast: Arabella Olivia Clark as Bela Sean Kaufman Adam Silver Jessica Chastain Jay Duplass Dichen Lachman Karen Allen Are y'all as terrified about this film as I am?
