Asian Athletics Championships 2025: Indian women win 4x400m relay gold, men clinch silver
The quartet of Jisna Mathew, Rupal Chaudhary, Kunja Rajitha and Subha Venkatesan helped India win its first gold in the event since 2013 as it clocked 3:34.18s. Vietnam (3:34.77s) grabbed silver while Sri Lanka (3:36.67s) clinched the bronze.
In the men's event, the quartet of Jay Kumar, Dharmveer Choudhary, Manu Thekkinalil Saji and Vishal TK finished behind Qatar to take the silver medal in a thrilling race. India clocked 3:03.67s while Qatar's timing was 3:03.52s. China (3:03.73s) grabbed the bronze medal.
In women's long jump, Ancy Sojan and Shaili Singh won the silver and bronze medals, respectively while Reihaneh Mobini Arani grabbed a historic first-ever gold medal in the event for Iran.

Asian Games silver medallist Ancy's best jump of 6.33m came in the third round while for Shaili, who had won the silver medal at the previous Asian Championships in Bangkok in 2023, her opening jump of 6.30m remained her top effort.
Arani took the gold with a second-round jump of 6.40m.
In heptathlon, Nandini Agasara (3,610 points) was the leader at the end of four events with China's Liu Jingyi (3,412 points) and Chinese Taipei's Cai Juan Chen (3,410 points) trailing her. The remaining three events - long jump, javelin throw and 800m - will take place on Friday.
In men's high jump, Sarvesh Kushare finished fifth as he failed to clear the bar set at 2.23m while in men's shot put, Samardeep Singh Gill finished sixth with a best throw of 19.25m.
India has won 14 medals - five gold, six silver and three bronze - at the ongoing edition which concludes on Saturday.

AIFF counsel likely to mention ISL impasse to Supreme Court on Monday
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is likely to mention the raging issue concerning the Indian Super League before the Supreme Court on Monday. The apex court has reserved its judgement on draft AIFF constitution and a hearing is scheduled for Monday. Hundreds of Indian and foreign footballers are living in uncertainty as the Masters Rights Agreement (MRA) between Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) and AIFF with regards to Indian Super League is yet to be signed. The clubs have decided not to pay salaries to the players and support staff till the impasse continues. 'Yes we will be attempting to mention but since judgement is reserved we have to see how the judges takes it. If they feel there is merit in appeal, they may ask for an application to be filed. The plight of the players, clubs and football need to be brought to their notice, ' a club source told PTI. The AIFF on Wednesday asked the legal counsels of the game's apex body and the ISL clubs to 'hold discussions' on the teams' concerns about the uncertainty over the upcoming season of the top-tier league. Last week, 11 Indian Super League clubs had urged the AIFF to urgently bring the 'current situation' of Indian football, arising out of the uncertainty over ISL's future, to the attention of the Supreme Court before which a case relating to the constitution of the national federation is pending. The ISL clubs, in a letter, said that they will have no option but to seek judicial recourse independently if the AIFF does not act on their request. 'On August 13, the AIFF responded and requested that the legal counsels of the clubs and the federation meet to hold discussions on the matter and decide on further action,' the AIFF tweeted. The clubs requested the AIFF to approach the top court a day after the national federation proposed the Super Cup in September to ensure sufficient competitive matches for the clubs after ISL organisers FSDL put a 'pause' on the league due to uncertainty over the renewal of Master Rights Agreement (MRA) it signed with them in 2010. The crisis deepened after ISL organisers FSDL put the 2025-26 season 'on hold' on July 11 due to uncertainty over the renewal of the MRA, prompting at least three clubs to either pause first-team operations or suspend player and staff salaries.

Indian female athletes to undergo gene test under World Athletics eligibility rules
All Indian female athletes qualifying for net month's World Athletics Championships in Tokyo must undergo a gene test in line with the policy of the international governing body of the sport. With just a month to go for the World Championships, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) will facilitate SRY gene testing for the Y chromosome that helps in the development of male characteristics. If the test result is negative, an athlete can participate in the female category in world-ranking events. 'For those female athletes who qualify for the world championships, the federation will get the gene test done because we can't leave it to the respective state associations of the athletes as there is not enough time. But we have issued a circular to state associations to start the gene test for their top athletes or those who are expected to participate in international events or world ranking events. This is following a circular to the federation from World Athletics,' AFI spokesperson Adille Sumariwalla told The Indian Express on Thursday. In June, World Athletics said it has 'approved new regulations concerning eligibility conditions to compete in the female category for world ranking competitions' which will come into effect from September 1 and would be applicable for the World Championships. The world body had mandated that all those wanting to compete in the female category at the World Championships must undergo a once-in-a-lifetime test for the SRY gene. 'This is to be conducted via a cheek swab or blood test, whichever is more convenient. The testing protocol will be overseen by Member Federations as they prepare their athletes and teams for the Championships in Tokyo,' World Athletics said. In the statement, World Athletics president Sebastian Coe had said: 'The philosophy that we hold dear in World Athletics is the protection and the promotion of the integrity of women's sport. It is really important in a sport that is permanently trying to attract more women that they enter a sport believing there is no biological glass ceiling. The test to confirm biological sex is a very important step in ensuring this is the case. We are saying, at elite level, for you to compete in the female category, you have to be biologically female. It was always very clear to me and the World Athletics Council that gender cannot trump biology.' . In March 2023, World Athletics had banned transgender athletes who had gone through male puberty from competing in the female category in international competitions.
