Sweltering Madinah residents driving summer surge to rural farms

Arab News3 days ago
MADINAH: Rural farms in the Madinah region are witnessing a surge in summer visitors as rising city temperatures drive people toward cooler, serene escapes.
Offering a mild, clear climate and distinctive natural charm, the farms have become sought-after havens for relaxation.
The tourist visits coincide with the beginning of the date harvest season, one of region's most celebrated agricultural events.
Visitors can discover the diversity of palm tree varieties, witness both age-old and modern harvesting practices, and learn techniques for nurturing the trees and safeguarding crop quality.
During this period, rural farms are at their most vibrant — towering palms heavy with golden clusters, the rhythmic chatter of farmers at work and the sweet fragrance of freshly picked dates create an immersive sensory experience.
Blending timeless tradition with the energy of the present, the season leaves a lasting imprint that draws visitors back year after year. Rural farms also play a vital role in boosting the promising agricultural tourism sector by offering enriching educational and cultural experiences.
These include workshops on organic farming, exhibitions of local farmers' produce — such as dates, honey and herbs — and dedicated marketplaces for selling the products of local artisans and productive families.
The Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture plays a key role in overseeing and advancing the sector. Through the Naama services portal, it streamlines the process of issuing licenses for rural farm projects, ensuring that all approved requirements and standards are met before granting authorization.
Beyond licensing, the ministry offers seven key services to support licensed projects, including technical assistance, agricultural guidance, as well as facilitating access to both local and regional markets.

Riyadh workshop promotes cultural heritage in nature reserves

RIYADH: The Imam Abdulaziz bin Mohammed Royal Reserve Development Authority, in collaboration with the Heritage Commission, organized a workshop on cultural heritage in nature reserves. It was part of national efforts to integrate cultural and environmental dimensions and promote national identity through the preservation and development of nature reserves, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Monday. Attended by various specialists and experts, the workshop explored ways to leverage intangible cultural heritage in nature reserves, emphasizing the vital role of local communities in preserving it and passing it on to future generations. The initiative reflects the collaborative efforts of national organisations committed to preserving cultural heritage, protecting natural biodiversity, and creating an integrated tourism experience that highlights the richness of Saudi identity in its environmental and cultural dimensions. The reserve is also undertaking extensive restoration efforts, planting hundreds of thousands of trees, particularly acacia, across its vast 91,500 sq. km area. This restoration aligns with the Saudi Green Initiative, aiming to revitalize the reserve's vegetation and restore ecological balance, the SPA reported. Acacia trees are crucial to this effort due to their resilience in harsh desert climates and their significant ecological role. They provide grazing, shade and habitat for wildlife while also helping to stabilize the soil and offering a nectar source for high-quality honey.

Under the agreement, SATS Saudi Arabia will provide comprehensive dedicated cargo handling services at its existing 60,000 square-metre Riyadh airfreight terminal, featuring facilities including specialized zones for pharmaceuticals, ecommerce, live animals, valuables, and dangerous goods. This partnership grants Riyadh Air instant access to SATS' global network of over 225 stations, supported by over 250 airline partners and leading freight forwarders, the statement added. Additionally, the hub management operations will include centralized cargo and security control centers for real-time operational oversight. These operations will leverage SATS' established hub management expertise, providing seamless coordination of cargo connections and serving as a focal point for routing shipments to their intended destinations across Riyadh Air's growing global network. These technological advances will be complemented by the facility's scalable infrastructure, ensuring robust capacity to support Riyadh Air's long-term growth ambitions. This strategic partnership exemplifies Riyadh Air's commitment to delivering world-class cargo services and establishing Riyadh as a thriving hub in the global logistics landscape.
