LDP to SE: give proper notice, provide backup power
Published on: Tuesday, May 20, 2025
Published on: Tue, May 20, 2025 Text Size: LDP Supreme Council Member and party political bureau lawyer Peggy Liow has urged Sabah Electricity to give at least seven days' notice for scheduled power cuts and to provide standby or mobile generators for outages lasting two hours or more. She cited complaints from Dah Yeh Villa residents in the Likas constituency over an eight-hour outage on Tuesday (May 20) from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm. Liow said simply issuing a notice is no longer enough as Sabah Electricity must offer alternatives to prevent inconvenience and economic loss. 'Prolonged outages can cause food spoilage in fridges and freezers, which is unacceptable,' she said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Russia says captured another village in Ukraine's Sumy region
MOSCOW: Russia's army said Wednesday that its forces had captured another village in Ukraine's northeastern Sumy region, where Moscow has stepped up its offensive in recent weeks. The Russian troops captured Novomykolaivka in Sumy, a settlement around four kilometres (two miles) from the Ukraine-Russia border, the defence ministry said on Telegram. The advance of Moscow's army comes as peace talks have stalled and as Russia rejects the unconditional truce demanded by Kyiv and its European allies. Ukraine has dismissed Russia's demands as 'ultimatums'. Russia first tried to capture the regional capital Sumy at the start of its offensive in 2022, before being pushed back in a Ukrainian counter-offensive later that year. In 2024, Kyiv used the Sumy region as the base for its own armed incursion into Russia's western Kursk region. After recapturing the Kursk territory earlier this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his army to once again advance across the border to push back Ukraine's forces. Sumy is not one of the five Ukrainian regions that Russia claims to have formally annexed. Russia's defence ministry said Wednesday that its troops had also captured the settlement of Dovgenke in the Kharkiv region.

Calls grow to defer SST expansion in Sabah
Published on: Wednesday, June 18, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 18, 2025 Text Size: Chua (left) and Ummi KOTA KINABALU: Star deputy president Datuk Kenny Chua has urged the Federal Government to reconsider the planned expansion of the Sales and Service Tax (SST), citing the strain it could place on Sabah's cost of living. He said clearer communication was needed on how revenue from the revised SST would directly benefit communities, particularly in economically lagging regions like Sabah. Advertisement Chua warned that without proper engagement, the timing of the SST move - just ahead of expected state elections - could raise public concern and resistance. He proposed that implementation be deferred until the government consults with state authorities and local stakeholders on potential impacts. Echoing similar concerns, Sabah Umno Puteri chief Ummi Nabilah Jamal warned that many Sabahans, already earning below the national income average, may not be able to bear further costs. She said confusion among small traders over which goods are taxed at which rate could lead to exploitation, ultimately burdening consumers. Ummi called for a moratorium on SST expansion in Sabah and urged both federal and state governments to develop more equitable and targeted economic strategies before moving forward. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
