He emphasised that the legal process should be allowed to proceed and that the individuals involved have the right to defend themselves in court.
Advertisement Hajiji made the remarks during a visit to Dewan Sri Putatan, a temporary shelter for fire victims from Petagas and Bukit Vor, where aid was distributed to affected households. The assistance included financial support from State and religious agencies, as well as plans to rebuild around 10 destroyed homes under the Rumah Mesra SMJ scheme. Hajiji also noted that early discussions on the upcoming state election have already begun. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Non-Malays in top roles ‘increasingly accepted', activist observes
Published on: Friday, August 15, 2025 Published on: Fri, Aug 15, 2025 Text Size: KUALA LUMPUR: Political activist Badrul Hisham Shaharin ( pic ), better known as Che'GuBard, is once again in the spotlight, this time over his remarks on non-Malays being appointed to senior positions in national institutions. Taking to his Facebook page, he recently highlighted the recent appointment of Datuk M Kumar as Director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Royal Malaysian Police as another sign of what he described as a move towards a 'Malaysian Malaysia.' Kumar officially assumed his new role on Aug 8, succeeding Datuk Fadli Marsus in one of the most influential posts in the police force after the Inspector-General of Police. Che'GuBard also referred to the historic promotion of Datuk Johnny Lim Eng Seng as the first Malaysian Chinese officer to hold the rank of Lieutenant General in the Malaysian Armed Forces. He said such appointments signalled greater acceptance of merit-based selections, noting that the 1967 Setapak Declaration opposed the segregation of citizens into bumiputera and non-bumiputera groups. According to him, it is becoming increasingly common for non-Malays to be given positions of authority, with even parties that once opposed the idea now accepting it. Che'GuBard said early racial concerns over such appointments were quickly addressed by voices emphasising the importance of professional expertise over ethnicity. He also suggested that the trend could one day lead to non-Malays holding the positions of Chief Justice, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Chief of Police, and possibly even Prime Minister, if they are deemed capable of advancing the nation's interests. In his post, he remarked that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had acknowledged Malaysia's shift from race-based to need-based policies. Che'GuBard ended his commentary by congratulating those he credited with shaping what he sees as a new direction for the country's leadership. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Public urged not to politicise Zara Qairina case or use it for social media attention
Published on: Friday, August 15, 2025 Published on: Fri, Aug 15, 2025 By: Jonathan Nicholas Text Size: Razali speaking to reporters after the special prayer. KOTA KINABALU: Darau Gagasan Rakyat chief Datuk Razali Razi has urged the public not to exploit the death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir for political gain or social media attention. Speaking ahead of a special prayer for Zara attended by around 200 people at Masjid Al-Munir in Kampung Darau on Friday night, he called for sensitivity towards the grieving family. Razali said he respected netizens' calls for justice but cautioned against those using the tragedy for personal popularity, adding, 'This is about emotional support for the family, not making ourselves relevant.' He appealed to the public to avoid speculation, stressing that an inquest was necessary to uncover the facts and urging authorities to 'either enforce or review the school's anti-bullying system, if it's loose, tighten it.' 'Treat this seriously, but don't politicise it to become a hero. Zara must be remembered with compassion, held in our thoughts and prayers with hope for clarity and peace,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? I shouldn't have cited use of Sedition Act against Akmal, says Ramkarpal
Published on: Friday, August 15, 2025 Published on: Fri, Aug 15, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh asked for Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh to be investigated for intentional insult with intent to provoke a beach of the peace, and public mischief under the Penal Code. PETALING JAYA: Former deputy law minister Ramkarpal Singh has regretted asking for Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh to be investigated for sedition over his remarks on the upside down flag issue in Penang. Ramkarpal, the Bukit Gelugor MP, said he remains against the use of the Sedition Act 1948 and wanted it to be repealed. In a statement today, he said he has 'always been, and still am, of the view that the Sedition Act ought to be repealed due to its draconian nature in line with the government's commitment to reform'. Ramkarpal had on Wednesday called for Akmal to be probed under the Sedition Act, saying the Umno Youth chief had issued several 'extreme and unacceptable' statements that were divisive, contained racial undertones, and had the potential to threaten public order. He also asked for Akmal to be investigated under the Penal Code for criminal intimidation, intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of the peace, and statements conducing to public mischief. Ramkarpal said since there had been many police reports on the case, such investigations should begin right away, in the public interest. 'I am of the view that there are sufficient grounds to commence such investigations,' he said. Earlier today, DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook ordered his party's youth wings to lodge police reports against Akmal over a rally held outside a hardware store in Kepala Batas yesterday. Loke called it a form of bullying and an action against police orders. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
