KOTA KINABALU: Darau Gagasan Rakyat chief Datuk Razali Razi has urged the public not to exploit the death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir for political gain or social media attention. Speaking ahead of a special prayer for Zara attended by around 200 people at Masjid Al-Munir in Kampung Darau on Friday night, he called for sensitivity towards the grieving family. Razali said he respected netizens' calls for justice but cautioned against those using the tragedy for personal popularity, adding, 'This is about emotional support for the family, not making ourselves relevant.' He appealed to the public to avoid speculation, stressing that an inquest was necessary to uncover the facts and urging authorities to 'either enforce or review the school's anti-bullying system, if it's loose, tighten it.' 'Treat this seriously, but don't politicise it to become a hero. Zara must be remembered with compassion, held in our thoughts and prayers with hope for clarity and peace,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? GRS should have been grateful for PH support, says Sabah PKR

Published on: Monday, August 18, 2025 Published on: Mon, Aug 18, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) should have been grateful for the support given by Pakatan Harapan (PH) and the Prime Minister in stabilising the State Government during the Kinabalu Move episode, said Sabah PKR information chief Ahmad Farid Sainuri ( pic ). He said the leadership of GRS ought to recognise that Sabah PH and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had played a central role in ensuring the State Government remained intact when it was under pressure. Farid, in a statement on Monday, explained that the response by Sabah PKR chairman Datuk Mustapha Sakmud was directed at a statement made earlier by Sabah Umno information chief Datuk Suhaimi Nasir, and not an attempt to label GRS as a liability. According to him, Mustapha's concerns had been misrepresented, as the main point was to highlight PKR's commitment to ensuring political stability at both national and state levels for the well-being of the people. He said the partnership between PH and GRS should continue to be strengthened, and that it was never the party's intention to challenge the leadership of the Prime Minister or the Chief Minister. Farid also stressed that Sabah PKR respected the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor and valued the working relationship between the two coalitions despite occasional misunderstandings in media reporting. He added that PKR hoped seat negotiations for the coming state election would be concluded swiftly, fairly and strategically, with discussions carried out through the Sabah PH leadership rather than only with individual component parties. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Delay over 2.7km stretch. Agencies told: Don't make the Tuaran folks suffer

Published on: Monday, August 18, 2025 Published on: Mon, Aug 18, 2025 Text Size: Tuaran Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau raised the matter in the Dewan Rakyat, expressing frustration over the lack of visible progress despite earlier assurances that physical work would begin in the second quarter of 2025. Kuala Lumpur: The Jalan Berungis (Route 503) upgrade project from Berungis Roundabout to Pekan Tuaran has achieved only 2.06 per cent physical progress as of June 30, significantly behind its targeted 3.18 per cent completion rate due to land acquisition delays. The Federal Ministry of Works cited ongoing land acquisition issues as the primary cause of delays affecting the project to upgrade the 2.7-kilometer stretch. These delays have also disrupted preliminary infrastructure work, including the relocation of water and electricity utilities. Tuaran Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau raised the matter in the Dewan Rakyat, expressing frustration over the lack of visible progress despite earlier assurances that physical work would begin in the second quarter of 2025. 'Even after the second quarter has passed, no significant physical progress is visible in the area,' the Upko honorary president told Parliament on August 6. The infrastructure project, which officially commenced on March 12, 2024, aims to transform the road into a four-lane dual carriageway with enhanced U5 specifications. The upgrade includes constructing U-turn bridges and replacing existing culvert structures with new bridges. The Ministry said land acquisition plans were only submitted to the Sabah Land and Survey Department on September 30, 2024, while the draft gazette declaration was forwarded to the State Attorney General's office on October 9, 2024 and remains pending official approval. The Ministry pledged to closely monitor the land acquisition process through enhanced cooperation with State agencies to prevent further delays. The project is scheduled for completion by March 31, 2028. Madius called on all relevant agencies to expedite pending procedures, emphasiding that Tuaran residents have waited years for improved road infrastructure. 'I hope all involved agencies can act immediately for the benefit of local residents,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Zara Qairina inquest to start within weeks, says AG

Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar said the date would depend on the schedules of the coroner's court and the lawyers involved. PETALING JAYA : An inquest into the death of Sabah schoolgirl Zara Qairina Mahathir, 13, is expected to start at the end of this month or early September, according to Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar. Dusuki was quoted by Buletin TV3 as saying the date would depend on the schedules of the coroner's court and the lawyers involved. He said his department would seek an immediate start to the inquest. 'The investigators have taken the statement of a pathology expert. However, the autopsy report is still being prepared,' he said. The coroner's court in Kota Kinabalu is expected to set the date of the inquest tomorrow. The inquest had been requested by the Sabah state director of prosecutions. On Aug 13, the Attorney-General's Chambers said it had decided an inquest would be held to establish the cause and circumstances of Zara's death, including whether any criminal elements were involved. Zara was found unconscious at 4am on July 16 after allegedly falling from the third floor of her school's hostel in Papar, Sabah. She died at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital the following day. Her mother, Noraidah Lamat, filed a police report on Aug 3 stating that she recalled seeing bruises on parts of her daughter's back during the Islamic funeral washing ritual. Zara's body was exhumed last weekend to allow for a post-mortem.
