Penn State receives highest preseason AP Poll ranking since 1997
The AP Top 25 Poll has just been released, and needless to say, Penn State fans should be jumping with joy. For the first time in program history, the Nittany Lions were ranked second in the preseason poll. This is their highest preseason ranking since 1997, when they were ranked first in the nation, but ended up finishing 16th in the final poll of the season. Most importantly, though, is that it is the highest preseason ranking of the James Franklin era. This year, unlike previous years, the Nittany Lions will be looking to stay there. Penn State received 23 first-place votes in the preseason media poll, two fewer than the preseason no. 1, the Texas Longhorns. Texas edged Penn State for the top spot in the AP poll by just five total points. Other teams receiving first-place votes include Ohio State (11), Clemson (4), and Oregon (1). Last year, the Nittany Lions ranked 8th in the preseason AP poll and finished fifth, their highest final ranking since 2005, when they finished in third. This year feels different. Out of the top 25, Penn State arguably returns the most talent to its squad, starting with quarterback Drew Allar, running backs Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen, and defensive linemen Dani Dennis-Sutton and Zane Durant. Unfortunately, this did not see them as the top team in the nation. That would be the Texas Longhorns, one of ten SEC schools in the top 25. This is the Horns' first-ever preseason No. 1 ranking in program history. With ten schools, the SEC is the leading conference in terms of teams within the top 25 with the Big Ten a close second, with six. Penn State is joined by No. 3 Ohio State , No. 7 Oregon, No. 12 Illinois, No. 14 Michigan, and No. 20 Indiana. Ohio State continues its streak of 72 appearances in the preseason top 25. This year, the AP voters favored the experience of the Nittany Lions over the new-look Buckeyes. We will have to wait and see if they live up to that standard. MLB drops plan to start World Series early if both League Championship Series end by Game 5
NEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball dropped its plan to start the World Series early if both League Championship Series are short, announcing Tuesday that this year's Fall Classic will start on Oct. 24. MLB last year said Game 1 would move up from Oct. 25 to Oct. 22 if the LCS ended by Oct. 19, when both leagues were scheduled to be through Game 5. But the New York Mets won Game 5 of the NL Championship Series before losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 6. Since the LCS expanded to best-of-seven in 1985, both leagues ended in four or five games in 1989, 2001, 2002, 2014 and 2022. Last year was the first in which MLB announced a flexible schedule. Game 7 of this year's World Series would be on Nov. 1. The World Series ended in November in 2001, '09, '10, '15, '16, '17, '21 and '22 and '23, going as late as Nov. 5 in 2022. The World Series is scheduled to start on a Friday for the fifth straight year. Before 2022, the Series had not started on a Friday since 1915. NL Division Series will have an extra scheduled off day between Games 1 and 2, a format that allows a team to have the same pitchers start Games 1 and 4, and Games 2 and 5 on normal four days' rest. Last year, AL Division Series had the extra off day. All four best-of-three Wild Card Series are scheduled for consecutive days from Sept. 30 to Oct. 2 at the side of the higher seed. Twelve teams make the playoffs under the format that began in 2022. The top two teams in each league get first-round byes, while the No. 3 seed faces No. 6 and No. 4 plays No. 5. The higher seed will be home in each best-of-three series. In the best-of-five Division Series, the top seed plays the 3-vs.-6 winner and the No. 2 seed plays the 4-vs.-5 winner. The Division Series will have the familiar format of the higher seed home for Games 1 and 2, and, if necessary, Game 5. AL Division Series also will start Oct. 4-5 followed by travel day and switch to the other sites for games on Oct. 7-8. Game 5s would be Oct. 10. NL Division Series start on Oct. 4, have an off day followed by a game on Oct. 5, then switch to the other cities on Oct. 8-9. After another travel day, Game 5s would be played Oct. 11. ___

Grealish looks to reignite his career after joining Everton on a season-long loan deal from Man City
LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — England midfielder Jack Grealish will look to reignite his career after joining Everton on a season-long loan deal from Manchester City on Tuesday. The 29-year-old Grealish, one of the poster boys of English soccer, became the country's most expensive player after a 2021 move from Aston Villa to City for 100 million pounds (then $139 million). He was a regular pick in City's historic 2022-23 season when the team won the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup. However, Grealish has fallen out of favor over the last two seasons, not even making City's squad for the recent Club World Cup, and has chosen to move to Everton for a season ahead of the 2026 World Cup in North America. 'I'm over the moon to have signed for Everton - it's massive for me, honestly,' Grealish said. 'This is a great club, with great fans." The loan switch removes not only a high-earner from City's wage bill but also one of the many attacking midfielders built up in City's stacked squad. Grealish often had a free, roaming role when making his name at Villa, but had to be more disciplined and restricted as a left-sided forward in City manager Pep Guardiola's system of play. Everton manager David Moyes will try to get the best out of Grealish again, with the team's first match of the Premier League season at Leeds on Monday. 'As soon as I spoke to the manager, I knew there was only one place that I wanted to go,' Grealish said. ___
