Panda wins the 2025 Palm Dog award at Cannes — and a look-alike accepts

CANNES, France (AP) — It's called the Palm Dog contest, but Friday's winner of the annual Cannes Film Festival tradition was a Panda.
Panda, though, is an Icelandic sheepdog who stars in 'The Love That Remains,' from Icelandic director Hlynur Pálmason. Always positioned at the tail end of the festival, the beachside Palm Dog ceremony comes a day before the winner of the festival's Palme d'Or is announced.
Pálmason's tragicomic film, which premiered at Cannes not in competition, follows five characters — Panda included — over the course of a year after the breakdown of a marriage. Panda is ever-present and very much part of the on-screen family and at the heart of the movie. Panda, who retains her name in the film, is Pálmason's dog and stars alongside his real-life children in the movie, which may explain the award-winning performance.
While Panda sadly could not be there to collect the award, a look-alike local pooch was on hand to collect the coveted dog collar along with one of the film's human producers. Panda did make a virtual appearance with an acceptance video, on a car journey through Iceland. She succeeds last year's winner, Kodi, from 'Dog on Trial.'
This year's awards marked the 25th anniversary of the much-loved event. Palm Dog founder Toby Rose explained that it has had more impact that he could imagine, becoming a fixture at Cannes.
'We honor the four-legged here just so they get a bit of their moment before the big dresses and the tuxedos take over,' Rose said.
Other prizes included the 'Mutt Moment' Award, for stealing the scene. This went to a long-haired dachshund and a rottweiler, for their roles in raunchy BDSM biker drama 'Pillion,' starring Alexander Skarsgård and Harry Melling. The scene in question involves the film's two lovers bringing their respective dogs to a nighttime tryst.
In a thank-you statement, director Harry Lighton described Hippo the dachshund's 'raw sex appeal' and said she's the true domme in 'Pillion.'
Finally the grand jury prize was awarded to mystical Spanish odyssey 'Sirât,' for Jack Russell terrier Pipa and Lupita, a Podenco cross. The story follows a father searching for his daughter across the desert, accompanied by his son — and Pipa and Lupita.
Lead actor Jade Oukid was there in person to collect the award alongside director Oliver Laxe. She told the gathered audience that Lupita was her own dog, who had sadly died soon after filming. After the show, Rose added that Lupita would be immortalized with this prize: 'We were so happy that we could celebrate a short life.'
The Palm Dog has seen many a famous guest come down to pick up their awards in person. Quentin Tarantino came in person to collect the award in 2019 when Brandy the pit bull in 'Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood' won. And, in 2021, Tilda Swinton attended the ceremony to pick up the prize when her own three dogs, Rose, Dora and Snowbear, won the award for their roles in Joanna Hogg's 'The Souvenir II.'

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce attend Game 4 of Stanley Cup Final between Panthers and Oilers

Associated Press SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — Pop superstar Taylor Swift and boyfriend Travis Kelce were among the celebrities that flocked to Amerant Bank Arena on Thursday to watch Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final between the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers. Kelce, a Super Bowl-winning tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, is a known hockey fan along with his brother Jason Kelce. And ever since Swift and Kelce began their high-profile romance in 2023, the 14-time Grammy Award winning singer has been known to pop in on big sporting events — including the last two Super Bowls — and cause an excited frenzy for fans. There were rumblings ahead of Thursday's game that the couple might attend the final. A helicopter landed near Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, Florida, ahead of the game. The VIP entrance to the area was also closed off and the media elevator was not available to be used for a period of time before pregame warmups began. Swift recently announced that she regained control over her entire body of work. In a lengthy note posted to her official website, Swift said that all the music she's ever made now belongs to her after she has purchased her catalog of recordings — originally released through Big Machine Records — from their most recent owner, the private equity firm Shamrock Capital. Over the last few years, Swift has been rerecording and releasing her early albums in an attempt to regain control of her music. Other celebs in attendance included former Miami Dolphins star defensive end Jason Taylor, who banged the drum before the game. Miami Heat captain Bam Adebayo was joined by former Heat captain Udonis Haslem on the drum on Monday. The defending champion Panthers led the best-of-seven series 2-1 heading into Thursday's game. ___ AP NHL playoffs: and recommended

Popular rock band's stolen custom guitar has been found, mandolin still missing

Police in New Jersey have recovered one of 'two irreplaceable instruments' that were stolen from rock band Heart. A custom purple sparkle baritone Telecaster guitar, made for guitarist Nancy Wilson, was returned after a woman bought it from the theft suspect, the Associated Press reported. Surveillance video caught the suspect giving the guitar to a woman who put it in her car before parking a few blocks away from the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, where it had been stolen on the eve of their May 31. Police identified the vehicle by using automated license plate readers, the AP reported. Officers then tracked its location and contacted the owner, who voluntarily surrendered the instrument. The person she allegedly bought the guitar from has been charged with burglary and theft, the AP reported. Heart's other stolen instrument, a vintage 1966 Gibson EM-50 mandolin played by Paul Moak for more than 25 years, is still missing. 'These instruments are more than just tools of our trade — they're extensions of our musical souls,' Wilson previously said in a statement shared to Instagram. 'The baritone Tele was made uniquely for me, and Paul's mandolin has been with him for decades,' she said. 'We're heartbroken, and we're asking for their safe return — no questions asked. Their value to us is immeasurable.' Heart is offering a reward for information leading to the return of the instrument. Anyone with information is urged to come forward and contact the band's tour manager, Tony Moon, at tonymoon@ Known for hits such as 'Crazy on You,' 'Magic Man,' 'Barracuda,' 'What About Love?,' and 'Alone,' Heart has sold more than 35 million records worldwide and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2013. Heart resumed the band's 'Royal Flush Tour' in February after postponing it last year as Nancy's sister, lead singer Ann Wilson, had to be treated for cancer. A Grammy category is created for album covers just as Sabrina Carpenter's takes the spotlight

NEW YORK -- NEW YORK (AP) — The Recording Academy has tweaked some of its rules for the 2026 Grammy Awards, including carving out a stand-alone category for best album cover — a day after Sabrina Carpenter sparked considerable discourse unveiling what is believed to be the cover for her next album. The academy on Thursday announced that the best recording package and the best boxed or special limited edition package categories will be combined into the best recording package category, with best album cover spun out on its own. The last Grammy for best recording package went to 'Brat,' the Charli xcx album whose distinctive cover was immediately embraced by pop culture and meme creators. 'The Academy's top priority is to represent the music people that we serve each year,' Harvey Mason jr., CEO of the Recording Academy said in a statement. 'That entails listening carefully to our members to make sure our rules and guidelines reflect today's music and allow us to accurately recognize as many deserving creators as possible.' Carpenter revealed the title and release date for her new album, 'Man's Best Friend,' on Wednesday. The image shows Carpenter, dressed in a black dress and high heels, kneeling on the ground in a dog-like pose while an unseen person pulls her by the hair. On social media, some fans said the image was demeaning while others argued it was satirical. The album would be eligible for the new category if she releases 'Man's Best Friend' on Aug. 29, as promised. The Grammy eligibility period closes the next day. Other Grammy changes include the creation of a best traditional country album category, while the existing best country album category has been renamed best contemporary country album. (Beyoncé won best country album at the 2025 Grammy Awards for "Cowboy Carter.") The best new artist category has also been expanded to include acts who were featured on previous album of the year nominees, so long as they fall below 20% of the album's music.
