Former child star Drake Bell claims ‘no one' on Nickelodeon gets paid residuals: ‘Child labour'
The Drake & Josh star, 39, recently claimed that 'no one' on Nickelodeon receives residuals for their time on the popular children's network. He also slammed the belief that everyone on TV is rich.
'That's the perception of the world, it's always been this way,' Bell said during an episode of The Unplanned Podcast earlier this month. 'It's like, you know, 'Oh, you made a Folgers Coffee commercial. You must live in a mansion in Hollywood. Like, I saw you on TV. You're rich.''
'That's far from the case,' he explained. 'And especially, which is the bummer for most of us on Nickelodeon, we don't get residuals for our shows.'
Bell, who made his Nickelodeon debut on The Amanda Show with Amanda Bynes in 1999 before co-starring on Drake & Josh with Josh Peck from 2004 to 2007, revealed that almost everyone on the network only receives a one-time payment for their work.
He then compared Nickelodeon's 'flawed' system to shows like Seinfeld and Friends, and noted how the casts of those sitcoms still earn millions of dollars from syndication residuals.
'You want to get into syndication,' Bell told podcast hosts Abby and Matt Howard. 'You want to get to 100 episodes so that you can get to syndication, and then you want to get into syndication because then you get your residual money, that's where you make your money.'
'For example, the Friends cast at the peak was making a million dollars an episode,' he continued. 'You make 13 episodes that year, you make $13 million. You make 20 episodes that year, you make $20 million, right?
'But right now, each cast member of Friends, just in syndication alone, is making over $US20 million a year, and they're not filming a show every week,' Bell added.
'They're not going to work, but they're playing their show and they're using their likeness and they're doing all this, so they get paid for it.'
When Matt asked whether Nickelodeon stars didn't receive residuals because they were child actors, Bell claimed it was because the network was run by 'a lot of evil, corrupt people.'
'That's the only thing, that is the answer,' he said. 'There's no other answer.'
Meanwhile, Bell lamented how he still doesn't receive residuals despite seeing Drake & Josh replays and marathons on TV and popular streaming services.
'Do everything that they do to us mentally and emotionally, and then throw us to the wolves,' he said. 'And we're like, 'OK, cool. I got rent this month.''
'There are three channels doing Drake & Josh marathons. Netflix just bought it, it's top 10 on Netflix, and I gotta figure out how to pay my rent this month,' the actor continued. 'And some fat cat with a cigar is just sitting up at the top of Viacom, just going, 'Hehehe.' What do you call it? It's just like getting high on child labour.'
Bell, who filed for bankruptcy back in 2014, ended the podcast segment by saying that people outside of the entertainment industry 'don't understand how the business works.'
'They just see what the perception is on Instagram and social media and all the glitz and the glamour of Hollywood,' he said. 'We're putting in all of this work. This corporation is making billions with a 'B' off of us, and we're being compensated for the week of work, cool, but that's it.'
The Post has reached out to Bell's rep and Nickelodeon for comment.
This wouldn't be the first time the Drake & Josh star slammed Nickelodeon and the 'flawed' system the network had in place to protect child stars.
'And forever, in perpetuity,' Bell concluded. 'It literally says in the contract, across universes and galaxies and planets.'
Last year, Bell slammed Nickelodeon's 'pretty empty' apology after the Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV docuseries exposed the toxic behind-the-scenes world of children's TV shows.
Bell also revealed in the bombshell docuseries that he had been sexually assaulted by acting coach Brian Peck, and alleged that the shocking abuse is what started him down his self-destructive road.

Brooklyn Beckham's wife Nicola Peltz strips naked amid feud
Nicola Peltz stripped completely naked for a racy bath snap before posing topless in her latest sizzling set of selfies. The model and actress uploaded her 'best memories' in a happy summer holiday roundup posted to Instagram despite being in the midst of a feud with husband Brooklyn's loved ones. Nicola, 30, and Brooklyn, 26, have reportedly been keeping their distance from his family, after they failed to attend dad David's 50th birthday party. Chef and photographer Brooklyn has continued to gush over his spouse throughout - despite 'cutting off brothers Cruz and Romeo' in the drama - amid fears he's 'obsessed' with his marriage. He recently opened up further on his affections in a Instagram grid post in which he claimed popping the question to the American was the 'best decision ever.' And the Brit appeared more than happy to embrace his photographer streak for Nicola's latest snap in their bathroom. It sees the beauty fully stretched out in a white tub with no bubble bath, the clear water giving a glimpse of her toned figure. She covered her modesty with her arm and leg, leaving her dark locks flowing into the water. Nicola went make-up free and accessorised with a single diamond bracelet. She flashed a pout as she looked directly upwards at Brooklyn taking the snap. In the comments section, eldest Beckham son Brooklyn proudly wrote: 'I took the photo in the bath.' He then added: 'Love you xx'. Brooklyn recently opened up to Glamour on his early plans to pop the question to the actress, who he married in Miami three years ago. In a rare joint interview and cover shoot with his wife, Brooklyn said: 'I knew after three months that I wanted to marry her. 'But because of COVID, I wanted to wait until our families could be there.' Yet the chef and photographer failed to mention his parents David and Victoria by name, and claims he has now hired Prince Harry's lawyers to solve the bitter dispute. Brooklyn continued to detail his proposal plans to Glamour Magazine's Germany edition adding: 'A few hours before, I had a golf cart accident and needed stitches in my hand. 'My thumb was completely bandaged - I couldn't even open the wine!' During the chat, he was quick to gush over his spouse and their almost-instant connection. He said: 'When I first saw Nicola at Coachella, I was immediately captivated - by her beauty, her warmth, her charisma. 'Even though it was only a fleeting moment, it stayed with me for a long time.' He then added: 'You have to marry your best friend, someone you feel at home with. For me, Nicola is exactly that.' Brooklyn previously made a dig at his famous parents in a social media post about Bates Motel star Nicola, saying: 'My whole world. 'I will love you forever. I always choose you baby.' Their love story comes as Nicola recently revealed her huge new career move. As the actress enjoys her happy news, tensions within the Beckham clan have been simmering. Brooklyn recently broke his silence amid ongoing family drama, wishing sister Harper a happy birthday just days after being caught in a so-called 'WWIII' rift involving his brothers Romeo and Cruz. The feud reportedly boiled over after Romeo blocked both Brooklyn and Nicola on Instagram, blindsiding the couple during their holiday. Initial reports claimed Brooklyn and Nicola had unfollowed his siblings first, but insiders told The Sun that wasn't the case. A friend said: 'Brooklyn had no idea about any of this until he read about it online. 'It's possible Romeo and Cruz blocked them, which would make it appear as no longer following the brothers. 'They certainly didn't unfollow them or block them - they're as confused as anyone else. 'The first they heard about it was when it was being reported on,' added the insider.

How Ozzy Osbourne went from Prince of Darkness to King of Reality TV with The Osbournes
Black Sabbath frontman and rock icon Ozzy Osbourne died on Wednesday at the age of 76, leaving behind a legacy of hits. While the rocker's music will live on for decades on playlists and airwaves the world over, Osbourne also left a significant impact on television. Along with his wife Sharon and their children Kelly and Jack, Ozzy starred in one of the first ever reality TV shows, The Osbournes – a show which pulled back the curtains on their private lives and became a hit with audiences. It was the noughties and the beginning of the reality TV boom with only Survivor and Big Brother on screens at that point, but The Osbournes had a point of difference and proved to be a runaway success for MTV. 'No one had ever done what we did before,' Kelly said during an appearance on the Armchair Expert podcast in 2021. 'We didn't know what [footage] they were going to use, and what they weren't, because they filmed everything.' But the footage that made the cut resonated with audiences when it premiered in 2002, and 'the next day, everything changed. It was like Beatlemania, except for The Osbournes.' The show went on to run for four seasons on MTV from 2002 and 2005, winning a Primetime Emmy Award in its debut season for Outstanding Non-Fiction Program (Reality). The out-of-the-box hit also broke ratings records for MTV at the time, drawing in as much as 8 million viewers in one episode. 'We realised early on that anything Ozzy did was going to be funny,' Sue Kolinsky, who worked as a producer on the show, told the New York Post following Ozzy's death. 'Like making a milkshake – we were gonna have [that be] three minutes of an episode. He was so funny, and he had no idea how funny he was.' After the success of the first two seasons, Ozzy and Sharon secured a $US20 million payday for the next two seasons of the show. Perhaps what made the show a hit was that the Black Sabbath frontman was nowhere like his onstage persona, one who bites off the head of a bat when egged on. In reality, this 'Prince of Darkness' was more like a loveable teddy bear, and the viewers warmed to him. Safe to say, The Osbournes paved the way for other reality shows, such as Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie's The Simple Life in 2003, and Keeping Up With the Kardashians in 2007. Reality show aside, Ozzy also made great viewing in documentaries, with three docos about the legendary frontman available right now on Tubi. So press play and remember the life of Ozzy Osbourne with these docos on Tubi, which are all completely free to stream. The Decline of Western Civilisation Part II: The Metal Years (1988) A fast-paced look at the heavy metal scene in late 80s in LA, with a focus on struggling musicians, fans and starstruck groupies. In the doco, Ozzy shares the hard truths about living a rock'n'roll lifestyle. The doco also features interviews with legendary musicians such as Steven Tyler, Alice Cooper and Gene Simmons, who was among the many to pay tribute to Ozzy after his death. 'Sad to report Ozzy has passed away,' the Kiss rocker tweeted. 'He was a giant. Admired and loved by millions of fans worldwide. Prayers and condolences go out to the Osborne family.' Ozzy Osbourne: Crown Prince of Darkness (2022) This unauthorised documentary features interviews from the rocker while also airing previously unseen footage to reveal the true story of the often misunderstood frontman. This doco explores the history of Ozzy's influential heavy metal band, Black Sabbath. Through archival footage and interviews, the film dives into the band's impact on the music scene and the personal struggles they faced on their rise to the top.

Stephen Colbert tells Trump 'the gloves are off' as giants of late-night hosts rally around cancelled host
Some of the biggest names in late-night television have united to show support for cancelled Stephen Colbert, as The Late Show host used his first show back to declare to the US president that the "gloves are off". Last Week Tonight's John Oliver, The Tonight Show's Jimmy Fallon, The Daily Show's Jon Stewart and Late Night's Seth Meyers were among the celebrities to appear in the audience during a parody sketch on the show on Monday, local time. Last week, Colbert announced that his top-rated American late-night show had been cancelled by CBS and will end in May after the upcoming broadcast season. And while his axing may bring The Late Show franchise to an end after 33 years, it means for the next 10 months "the gloves are off", Colbert declared in his opening monologue, which he directed at Donald Trump. "Over the weekend, it sunk in that they're killing off our show. But, they made one mistake: they left me alive. He added that he "didn't care for him" and thought he "doesn't have the skill set to be president". Colbert also joked about show's demise, stating that "cancel culture has gone too far" and suggested the show's theatre would become a self-storage building. Colbert's late-night rivals were also joined on Monday night's episode by Anderson Cooper, Bravo's Andy Cohen, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Weird Al Yankovic, Adam Sandler and Christopher McDonald. The celebrities and hosts, which the show's Instagram called "supportive kings" appeared in a kiss cam parody sketch poking fun at the viral Coldplay CEO affair saga. Fallon and NBC colleague Meyers were "spotted" on the kiss cam sharing beers together, while Colbert's former colleagues on The Daily Show Oliver and Stewart were (enthusiastically) seated together. US media is reporting that CBS's parent company, Paramount, is seeking approval from the US Federal Communications Commission for a merger with Skydance Media, in a deal worth $US8.4 billion ($12.9 billion). This month, Paramount also agreed to pay Mr Trump $US16 million over an interview with former vice-president Kamala Harris on CBS's 60 Minutes program broadcast in October. Before his cancellation, Colbert joked on the show the deal was a "big fat bribe" — and said the company settled primarily to clear a hurdle to the Skydance sale. In the wake of the cancellation, CBS executives clarified it was "purely a financial decision" before an anonymous CBS source leaked that they pulled the show because of losses pegged between $US40 to $US50million. Colbert on Monday was quick to point out the irony in the top-rating show operating at a loss. "I could see us losing $24 million, but where would Paramount have possibly spent the other $16 million — Oh, yeah!" he said to a round of applause. Stewart used his monologue on The Daily Show, which runs on Paramount-owned Comedy Central, to blame Colbert's cancellation on "fear and pre-compliance" in the current US climate. "If you're trying to figure out why Stephen's show is ending, I don't think the answer can be found in some smoking gun email or phone call from Trump to CBS executives or in CBS QuickBooks spreadsheets on the financial health of late night," he said. "I think the answer is in the fear and pre-compliance that is gripping all of America's institutions at this very moment, institutions that have chosen not to fight the vengeful and vindictive actions of our … commander in chief." Mr Trump wrote on his own TruthSocial said that "absolutely love that Colbert got fired" and that the host's talent was "even less than his ratings". Colbert's response? "How dare you, sir. Would an untalented man be able to compose the following satirical witticism? Go f*** yourself." ABC
