U.S. women win AmeriCup gold, Canada claims bronze on last-second layup
The U.S. team, made up of college players, trailed 66-65 heading into the fourth quarter. Blakes, who finished a stellar freshman season at Vanderbilt, hit a 3-pointer early in the period to give the Americans a 70-69 advantage and sparked a 9-0 run.
South Carolina's Joyce Edwards capped the spurt with a layup that made it 76-69 with 6:37 left. Bella Nascimento hit two free throws to snap the drought and get the South American country within five.
The start of the game was delayed as the bronze medal game between Canada and Argentina went to double overtime.
The Canadians won 76-75 on a layup by Michigan star Syla Swords with 1.4 seconds left.
Along with her game-winning shot, Swords led Canada with 23 points, six rebounds and three assists.
The Sudbury, Ont., native equalled a game-high with five three-pointers.
The Americans answered every run Brazil made down the stretch and when Damiris Dantas hit a 3-pointer with 40 seconds left to make it 89-84, Hannah Hidalgo, who finished with 16 points, hit three of four free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
"What a performance by our team. Knew it would be a tough physical game. It was what we expected," U.S. coach Kara Lawson said. "Brazil is a wonderful team. The power they have in the frontcourt gave us some challenges. Our team continued to fight, and we felt like if we could wear down with our depth a little bit maybe in the fourth quarter we could pull away."
Dantas, who plays for the Indiana Fever, scored 35 points to lead Brazil. Nascimento had 24 points and Kamilla Cardoso added 19. The rest of the Brazilian team scored six points.
The U.S. trailed 47-45 at the half despite Blakes scoring 17 points in the opening two quarters.
The Americans won the AmeriCup in 2019 and 2021, but lost to Brazil in the gold medal game in 2023.

Italian soccer coaches call for Israel to be suspended by UEFA and FIFA over Gaza war
FLORENCE, Italy (AP) — The Italian Soccer Coaches' Association is pushing for Israel to be suspended from international competition over the war in Gaza. Ahead of Italy's crucial World Cup qualifiers against Israel in the next two months, the AIAC says 'Israel must stop. Soccer must also take action.' The AIAC has written a formal letter to the Italian soccer federation, to be forwarded to European and world soccer's governing bodies, calling for Israel to be suspended. 'The AIAC Board of Directors unanimously believes that, given the daily massacres, which have also resulted in hundreds of deaths among managers, coaches, and athletes … it is legitimate, necessary, indeed a duty, to place at the center of federation talks the request, to be submitted to UEFA and FIFA, for the temporary exclusion of Israel from sporting competitions,' the letter concludes. 'Because the pain of the past cannot cloud anyone's conscience and humanity.' Italy is set to play Israel on neutral turf in Debrecen, Hungary on Sept. 8, before hosting the return match in Udine on Oct. 14. 'We could just focus on playing, looking the other way. But we believe that is not right,' AIAC vice president Giancarlo Camolese said. The Azzurri also played Israel in Udine last October in a Nations League match that saw protests before and during the game and intense security measures, including snipers on the roof of the stadium. Since then the situation has continued to deteriorate with the Palestinian death toll from the 22-month war passing 62,000 earlier this month. 'The world is in flames. Canada loses semifinal to U.S. at Americas Cup wheelchair basketball tournament
Team Canada's shot at a berth in the gold-medal final came up about a quarter short at the IWBF Americas Cup on Tuesday In Bogota, Colombia. The national senior men's wheelchair basketball team dropped a 70-57 semifinal decision to the United States, and will now have to refocus on a bronze-medal game with host Colombia on Wednesday. Canada led 15-14 after the first quarter, but the Americans were ahead 32-28 at halftime and 49-43 entering the final quarter. Colin Higgins led Canada with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Reed De'Aeth had 17 points and seven rebounds. Canada outrebounded the Americans 43-34. Jorge Salazar led the Americans with 13 points, while Paul Schulte, Kesean Paire and Jeromie Meyer scored 12 points each. The U.S. will play Argentina in Wednesday's gold-medal game. Argentina edged Colombia 59-55 in the semifinals. The Americas Cup is a qualification tournament for the 2026 IWBF Wheelchair Basketball World Championship that will take place in Ottawa, from Sept. 9-19.
