64% population now under one social welfare scheme, up from 19% in 2015
NEW DELHI: The enormous achievement by India in covering over 94 crore people under social protection benefits garnered much appreciation during the International Labour Organisation (ILO) meeting in Geneva on Wednesday. The organisation officially acknowledged the country's achievement and published it on its dashboard.
Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya is leading an Indian delegation to Geneva from June 10-12 to participate in the 113th session of the International Labour Conference (ILC) of the ILO.
'A total of 64.3% of India's population, which represents over 94 crore people, are now covered under at least one social protection benefit. In 2015, this figure was just 19%. In terms of beneficiary count, India now ranks second in the world, providing social protection to around 94 crore citizens,' an official release said.
The Director-General of the ILO praised India's focused welfare policies for the poor and labour class under PM Modi's leadership, the release said.
'It is important to note that the present figure reflects only Phase I of the data pooling exercise. This phase focused on beneficiary data of Central and women-centric schemes in selected 8 States. With Phase II and further consolidation underway, it is expected that India's total social protection coverage will soon surpass the 100-crore mark upon verification of additional schemes by the ILO,' the release added.

The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, carrying 232 passengers and 10 crew members, crashed into a residential area in Meghani Nagar, Ahmedabad, on Thursday shortly after take-off from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The aircraft, en route to London's Gatwick airport, issued a 'Mayday' call before losing contact with Air Traffic Control (ATC), reaching only 625 feet before plummeting into a medical college hostel, igniting a massive fire ball. The crash claimed the lives of 241 people on board and at least three medical students on ground. The sole survivor, a British national of Indian origin seated near an emergency exit, is currently at the civil hospital where 45 others, including undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) medical students, are receiving treatment. Authorities have confirmed that four medical students and the wife of a doctor were also killed in the mishap. Prime Minister Modi is expected to assess the situation, meet officials and review preliminary findings from the ongoing investigation, which is being led by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB). Preliminary reports indicate that the aircraft may have experienced a malfunction in a wing flap as the landing gear was seen to be in a downward position during ascent, which is unusual for that phase of the flight, an Airports Authority of India official said. Investigators are also considering possibilities like overloading or a bird strike, though clear weather conditions rule out environmental factors, he added. The aircraft's flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder, commonly referred to as the 'black box', are being analysed. A high-level committee has been established to ensure a thorough and transparent probe, adhering to international aviation safety protocols. Rajeshbhai Patni, a 47-year-old auto-rickshaw driver, was dropping off passengers near the hostel when the flight crashed. He witnessed the devastating moment firsthand as the aircraft collided with the building. 'I saw the plane exploding when it hit the roof. I saw red and black flames emerging from the building. I left my autorickshaw and ran for my life,' recounted Patni, who sustained injuries on his chest and leg. Sandeep Datani, who runs a coconut stall approximately 2km from the crash site, rushed to the scene after spotting smoke. 'I saw smoke rising and rushed to see what happened. There was another blast and that's when I started running,' said Datani, who escaped unhurt.

The leaders will have a bilateral meeting on the sidelines. As Carney and Modi look to rebuild the relationship, the former is expected to seek accountability for the murder of Nijjar and Indian PM a crack down on anti-India activities by separatist groups and extradition of wanted terrorists. "There are existing mechanisms between Indian and Canadian law enforcement agencies that have discussed issues of mutual security concern over a period of time. This engagement is likely to continue," said Jaiswal. According to the official, in their phone conversation last week the leaders had an opportunity to reflect on the India-Canada relationship and the way forward. "India and Canada are vibrant democracies bound by shared democratic values, a steadfast commitment to the rule of law, and vibrant people-to-people ties," he said.

Tata Electronics, the other smaller Apple iPhone supplier in India, on average shipped nearly 86% of its iPhone production to the U.S. during March and April, customs data showed. Its May data was not available. The company, part of India's Tata Group, started exporting iPhones only in July 2024, and only 52% of its shipments went to U.S. during 2024, the data showed. Tata declined to comment on the numbers. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has in recent years promoted India as a smartphone manufacturing hub, but high duties on importing mobile phone components compared to many other countries means it is still expensive to produce the devices in India.
