Baseball Fans Irate After Latest ‘Awful' Umpire Performance Saturday Afternoon

Ramon De Jesus and every other MLB umpire are likely ready for April to finally end.
It's been a rough month for umpires, with various turning heads for missed calls and controversial ejections. De Jesus joined the club Saturday afternoon, missing 18 calls in the Cincinnati Reds' 6-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies.

The Umpire Scorecard X (formerly Twitter) account found that De Jesus missed 11 of 54 called strikes; that 80% accuracy mark ranks well below the league's 88% average.
De Jesus' 89% overall accuracy was -3.3% below expected, and he missed 5.3 calls more than an average umpire.
'If I was this bad at my job I would be fired,' one X user wrote.
Others used terms like 'awful' and 'brutal' to describe De Jesus's performance. The official UmpScorecards website found only seven worse games across the league, with four coming over the season's first eight days.
'Average Ramon de Jesus umpiring performance,' a commenter replied, and they're actually being generous.

According to UmpScorecards, De Jesus has accurately called 93% of pitches in five games.

Only 15 of the league's 82 umpires have been more inaccurate.
'I believe umpires are trying their best to get it right, but calling balls/strikes is simply too hard for humans,' read one comment. 'Automate this process for accuracy and then all other umpire calls can be challenged.'
Although Major League Baseball tested the Automated Ball-Strike System in spring training, it is unclear if the league will implement it either later this season or during the playoffs.

Rockies bring up prospect Ryan Ritter, place shortstop Ezequiel Tovar on injured reserve

Associated Press DENVER (AP) — The Colorado Rockies are bringing up prospect Ryan Ritter to fill in for injured shortstop Ezequiel Tovar. Ritter had his contract selected from Triple-A Albuquerque on Friday before Colorado began a three-game series with the NL East-leading New York Mets. Tovar was placed on the 10-day injured list — retroactive to Tuesday — with a strained left oblique. It was part of a series of moves made by the last-place Rockies. They also released catcher Jacob Stallings and recalled catcher Braxton Fulford from Triple-A. Reliever Zach Agnos was reinstated from the bereavement list. The 24-year-old Ritter was picked by Colorado in the fourth round of the 2022 amateur draft out of the University of Kentucky. He's hit .284 with 48 homers, 166 RBIs and 42 stolen bases over parts of four minor-league seasons. Ritter was recently named the Pacific Coast League player of the month after hitting .381 for the Isotopes with 12 homers and 31 RBIs. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Ritter primarily played shortstop this season for Albuquerque. Tovar, a Gold Glove winner last season, is hitting .258 with three homers and 10 RBIs in 32 games. He spent time on the injured list earlier this season with a bruised left hip. ___ AP MLB: recommended

Kyle Teel gets a new shirt as he joins the Chicago White Sox for big league debut

CHICAGO (AP) — Kyle Teel has a new collared shirt and his own big league opportunity. Teel, one of the majors' top prospects, was brought up by the Chicago White Sox on Friday. The 23-year-old catcher was in the starting lineup for the opener of a weekend series against Kansas City, batting sixth. Teel was acquired in the Garrett Crochet trade with the Boston Red Sox in December. He batted .295 with eight homers and 30 RBIs in 50 games with Triple-A Charlotte. When Chase Meidroth, another prospect who was acquired by the White Sox in the Crochet deal, was brought up in April, Meirdroth told Teel he might need a collared shirt for his major league arrival, and Teel gave the infielder one of his own. So Charlotte manager Sergio Santos returned the favor when he broke the news to Teel that he was going to Chicago, handing over a new shirt. Teel was the No. 14 pick in the 2023 amateur draft out of the University of Virginia. His arrival marks a positive moment for a last-place White Sox team in the middle of a painful rebuilding process. Chicago also optioned catcher Korey Lee to Charlotte and designated right-hander Ryan Cusick for assignment. The 26-year-old Lee was sidelined by a sprained left ankle before he was activated by the White Sox on May 27. He is batting .250 (7 for 28) in 14 games with Chicago this season. ___ AP MLB:
