Izzat, Li Jane named Perak Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year

IPOH: National lawn bowler Izzat Shameer Dzulkeple and tenpin bowler Sin Li Jane were named Perak Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year for 2023/2024.
Each received a trophy and RM7,000 in cash, presented by the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, during the Perak Sports Awards ceremony held at Hotel Casuarina, Meru.
The Raja Permaisuri of Perak, Tuanku Zara Salim, also graced the occasion.
Also present were Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad and the State Education, Higher Education, Youth and Sports Committee chairman Khairudin Abu Hanipah.
In 2023, Izzat Shameer, 33, was ranked the world's No.1 male lawn bowler according to the World Bowls Series rankings, following his gold medal victory in the men's singles event at the Asian Lawn Bowls Championship.
Meanwhile, Li Jane became the first Asian to win the Professional Women's Bowling Association (PWBA) Tour Player of the Year title, joining an elite group of past winners that includes legends Lisa Wagner and Wendy Macpherson.
In his speech, Saarani said these accomplishments proved that Perak not only contributed to the nation's sporting development, but also consistently fostered excellence, resilience, and international achievement.
"With a rich legacy filled with triumphant moments, Perak has continually produced world-class athletes – priceless gems forged through discipline and determination. This blessed state remains a constant source of inspiration in shaping sporting icons who elevate Malaysia's standing on the global stage."
To maintain this momentum and nurture future generations of athletes, Saarani said the Perak State Sports Council (MSN) had introduced several key initiatives.
"Among them is the Perak Podium Programme, launched in 2017, as well as the Atlet Kita Juara Programme, which identifies and nurtures local talent. These are complemented by grassroots development efforts that serve as fertile ground for the emergence of future stars."
Currently, 202 high-potential athletes are enrolled in the Perak Podium Programme as they prepare for high-level competitions.
Saarani said that MSN Perak continued to prioritise both athlete welfare and character development, in order to preserve the state's sporting reputation in a holistic manner.
"We hope these efforts will be further strengthened across all levels of sports leadership, with clear and strategic planning to produce more Perak-born athletes capable of excelling on the world stage.
This includes providing world-class infrastructure and coaching, incentives for sporting excellence, and the advancement of sports science."

Mirabel cruises to maiden pro win

KUALA LUMPUR: Golfer Mirabel Ting made an instant impact in the professional ranks by romping to a commanding nine-shot victory at the PGM Royal Pahang Championship — barely a month into her pro career. The 19-year-old Sarawakian was in complete control throughout the 54-hole tournament at the Pahang Royal Golf Club, closing with a steady two-under 70 on Thursday for a winning total of 14-under 202. Mirabel, who turned professional earlier this month after leaving Florida State University with a year of eligibility left, had set the pace early with rounds of 67 and a brilliant 65 on Wednesday to build a five-shot cushion heading into the final round. She was the only player in the women's field to shoot under par across all three rounds. It was Mirabel's second victory on PGM Tour, after having won the Fortuner Cup in June last year. Aretha Pan took runner-up honours on five-under 211 (68-69-74), followed by Zulaikah Nasser in third at even-par 216 (73-72-71). The former world No. 2 amateur paid tribute to her late grandfather Ng Siaw Pheng — the person who first introduced her to golf. "He always hoped I'd turn pro and compete at the highest level. He was always there for me and Malcolm (her brother) whenever we returned to Miri," said Mirabel, who cashed in RM10,000 in prize money. "I'm thrilled to be playing at home and alongside my brother. This win means a lot." Her professional debut came at the Amundi Evian Championship in France earlier this month, where she missed the cut in the LPGA major. Meanwhile, the men's event saw Edven Ting prevail in a dramatic sudden-death showdown to end a two-year title drought. Edven, Ben Leong and amateur Nateeshvar Ganesh all finished regulation play tied at 14-under 202, forcing a three-way play-off. The deadlock was only broken on the fifth extra hole, where Edven calmly rolled in a winning putt as Ben faltered. It was Edven's first victory since capturing the Toyota Tour title at Templer Park in 2023.

Mirabel wins first pro title with nine-stroke victory in Pahang

PETALING JAYA: It didn't take long for Malaysian golf talent Mirabel Ting to lay claim to her first title in the professional ranks. The 19-year-old lifted the women's title in the PGM Royal Pahang Championship in Kuantan by a massive nine strokes – only three weeks after turning pro. A two-under 70 in the final round at Pahang Royal Golf Club was enough for Mirabel to secure her first title as a professional golfer with a total of 14-under 202. Mirabel carried a solid five-shot lead into the final round after carding a seven-under 65 on Wednesday. The Sarawakian, who made a surprising move to turn pro in the first week of July, laid down the marker with a five-under on the first day. Aretha Pan settled for second with a total of five-under 211 (68-69-74) with Zulaikah Nasser third on 216 (73-72-71). Mirabel, who left the amateur ranks with one more year to go at Florida State University, was the only woman golfer to finish below par in all three rounds. And Mirabel dedicated her win to her grandfather Ng Siaw Pheng, who introduced her to the game but passed away recently. "He always wanted me to turn pro and play in a major. He was always around whenever my brother (Malcolm Ting) and I returned to Miri to play golf. "I'm happy to be back home playing and to be playing alongside my brother as well," said the former world No. 2 ranked amateur, who pocketed RM10,000. Mirabel had made her pro debut at the Amundi Evian Ladies Championships but did not make the cut for the weekend. In the men's competition, Edven Ting ended a two-year title drought after winning an exciting three-way play-off battle against Ben Leong and amateur Nateeshvar Ganesh. Edven, Ben and Nateeshvar had to go to the play-offs after they were tied at 14-under 202. The title was only decided on the fifth play-off hole after Edven rolled in his putt while Ben missed his. Edven's last win was in the Toyota Tour at Templer Park Country Club in 2023. NSC awaits MNCF's final plan for 2025 SEA Games cycling funding

THE National Sports Council (NSC) has yet to finalise funding for the national cycling team's 2025 SEA Games preparations, pending an official decision from the Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF). NSC Director-General Jefri Ngadirin stated that MNCF's Council Members' Meeting this Saturday will determine the final plans, cyclist selection, and budget requirements. 'MNCF has shortlisted four cyclists each from TSG (Terengganu Cycling Team) and MPC (Malaysia Pro Cycling), plus one from the national team. Once confirmed, we'll discuss funding with NSC,' Jefri said after the 39th ASEAN Malaysian Women's Amateur Open Championship closing ceremony at Templer Park Country Club. When asked about MNCF's requested budget, Jefri emphasised that clarity in planning is crucial. 'Without a solid plan, funding decisions are difficult,' he added. Earlier, TSG and MPC warned they wouldn't release cyclists if their RM250,000 budget request was denied. NSC, however, ruled out additional funds for MNCF. - Bernama
