Lucas Ribeiro Costa was the standout star at the 2024/25 PSL Awards, walking away with an impressive four accolades, including the prestigious PSL Footballer of the Season.
The Mamelodi Sundowns forward's contribution, particularly during the first half of the campaign, was instrumental in securing the club's record-extending eighth consecutive league title.
Costa's performances ensured that Sundowns kept fierce rivals Orlando Pirates at bay while asserting their dominance in the Betway Premiership. In addition to the top honour, he was also named Players' Player of the Season, Goal of the Season, and Premiership Top Goal Scorer after netting 16 goals in league action.

While there was little debate over most of Costa's accolades, the Goal of the Season award raised some eyebrows. His composed finish against the Buccaneers — where defenders looked on rather than intervening — was undoubtedly elegant.
However, Fawaaz Basadien's stunning long-range strike from inside his own half arguably deserved the nod. Goals of that nature are rare in the PSL and far more difficult to execute, which could have tipped the scale in his favour.
The Coach of the Season award was another hotly contested category. On paper, Miguel Cardoso appeared the logical choice, having guided Sundowns to the title.
Although he only took charge midway through the campaign — replacing Manqoba Mngqithi — the impact he made was undeniable. He inherited a finely tuned side and steered them through a gruelling campaign, effectively ending the Sea Robbers' title push in the final stretch.
Standing in his way was Jose Riveiro, who had a strong case of his own. Despite falling 13 points short of the title, he kept the Buccaneers competitive across all fronts. His tactical acumen and consistency were evident throughout the campaign.
Still, Cardoso's success in solidifying Sundowns' grip on the league and leading them to a commanding finish was enough to tilt the balance in his favour.
Pirates and Sundowns shared the spotlight on the night.
Sipho Chaine edged out Ronwen Williams and Magesi FC's Elvis Chipezeze to claim Goalkeeper of the Season. Williams might have mounted a stronger challenge had injury setbacks not disrupted his campaign.
Another Pirates player, Nkosinathi Sibisi, rightfully took home Defender of the Season. His leadership and consistency stood out, especially as he partnered with a rotating cast of centre-backs throughout the campaign. His experience and adaptability were vital to the club's defensive stability and fully justified the recognition.
However, the most debatable decision of the night came in the Midfielder of the Season category.
Makhehlene Makhaula had an excellent campaign for the Buccaneers — especially in terms of breaking up play and winning possession. Yet Teboho Mokoena arguably had the edge.
Mokoena not only posted superior statistical returns but also brought balance to Sundowns' midfield. His contributions at both ends of the pitch, including set-piece delivery and goal threat, made him a more complete presence. Makhaula's work ethic was undeniable, but his limited progressive play raises questions about how the final decision was reached.

Stellenbosch FC aim for consistency as they face Kaizer Chiefs in the Premiership opener
Steve Barker continues to build one of South Africa's most progressive footballing projects in Stellenbosch. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix Stellenbosch FC have firmly established themselves as one of the most progressive teams in South African football over the past five years, achieving remarkable success despite operating on limited resources. As they head into the new campaign, expectations around the Cape Winelands club are higher than ever. The team will begin their 2025/26 Premiership season with a challenging fixture against Kaizer Chiefs at the DHL Stadium on Sunday. It's expected to be a tightly contested affair between two sides who have often been evenly matched in recent encounters. However, Chiefs have held the upper hand in their most recent meetings, including a 3-1 victory over Stellies in a controversial Nedbank Cup semi-final last season — part of a campaign in which Amakhosi also completed a league double over Steve Barker's side. Barker, who has had to constantly adapt due to losing key players to bigger clubs, continues to rally his troops with resilience and tactical flexibility. Despite often having to rebuild, Stellies enjoyed another impressive season last term, finishing third in the league and reaching the semi-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup — achievements that have now raised the bar for the team. Speaking at the launch of the Betway Premiership, Barker made it clear that despite past results, both teams start this season on equal footing. 'It's important that one doesn't dwell on last season's results,' Barker said. 'We know how the matches went. At least two of the three matches I felt we were a little bit unlucky. There are one or two areas that we need to be better in than we were last season. 'It's a new season, new players, the start of a new campaign. We never go out trying to get revenge for certain matches, but the great expectation and pressure is on our opposition more than us. 'They expect to get off to a good start, especially given the ambitions they have, the coaching staff, and the signings they've made over the last two seasons.' Since breaking into the top eight for the first time in the 2021/22 season, Stellenbosch have shown impressive growth and consistency.

Chiefs have also made a number of new signings in Ethan Chislett, Nkanyiso Shinga, Flavio Silva, Thabiso Monyane, Paseka Mako and Siphesihle Ndlovu. This could be an important step for Chiefs if they seriously want to compete with their Soweto Derby rivals Orlando Pirates and the reigning Betway Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns. Former Chiefs forward Justice Sithole said: 'You need to have quality players who understand the team if you really want to compete for major trophies. 'I think that at the moment, after the Nedbank Cup final, Chiefs can take it from there and move forward.' It's also Nasreddine Nabi's second season in charge as Chiefs coach, and now that he has settled into the role and clearly has the backing of the club, he has all the ingredients he needs to 'start cooking'. @Michael_Sherman IOL Sport
