Shedeur Sanders Catches Attention of Three-Time Pro Bowl QB
Shedeur Sanders dazzled in college, especially over his final season at the University of Colorado, where he completed 74 percent of his passes for 4,134 yards and 37 touchdowns to 10 interceptions. Across four seasons—two at Jackson State and two at Colorado—he threw for 14,347 yards with 134 touchdown passes and a 70.1 percent career completion rate, showcasing pinpoint accuracy and poise in the pocket.

Despite those impressive numbers and Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year honors, Sanders slid to the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft before the Cleveland Browns traded up to select him at No. 144 overall. Cleveland sent picks Nos. 166 and 192 to Seattle to secure the Colorado product, banking on his quick release and football IQ to accelerate his pro transition.

That belief was shared by three-time Pro Bowl quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, who watched Sanders through mandatory minicamp practices.
'So far in camp, I've been very impressed,' Hasselbeck said, praising Sanders's footwork and command of the huddle.
Hasselbeck, who threw for 36,638 yards and 212 touchdowns over a 17-year NFL career and earned Pro Bowl nods in 2003, 2005 and 2007, went on to predict Sanders could potentially start games for Cleveland later in the regular season.

'I wouldn't count him out to make the team and start at some point during the season,' he added, underscoring the rookie's chance to leap into Cleveland's quarterback hierarchy.
The Browns arrive in training camp with a crowded room that also includes veteran Joe Flacco, 40, third-round rookie Dillon Gabriel, 24, and four-year NFL veteran Kenny Pickett, 27.
As full pads come on, all eyes will be on whether Sanders' college precision translates into the NFL.

NBA's opening night game will feature the Thunder and Rockets
The Oklahoma City Thunder felt slighted last season when they were left off the NBA's Christmas schedule. That won't be an issue this year. MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the NBA champion Thunder will be working at home for Christmas this season, playing host to Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs as part of the league's annual Dec. 25 quintupleheader. BetMGM Sportsbook has the Thunder favored by 9.5 points. The other Christmas games, released by the NBA on Tuesday: Cleveland at New York (favored at -2.5), Houston at LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers (-1.5), No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg and Dallas visiting Golden State (-4.5), and Minnesota playing at Denver (-4.5). Some NBA Cup games are scheduled to be released Wednesday and the full schedule — 80 of the 82 games for all teams — is to be released on Thursday. The remaining two games for each club will be filled in December based on how teams fare in the NBA Cup. 'They make the schedule. We play it,' Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said last season, when asked about his club not being picked for the Dec. 25 lineup. 'Our players, I know, would have liked to play on Christmas because that's such a staple day in the NBA season. But we can't control that.' Well, they sort of did control their Christmas scheduling fate this season. The NBA champions typically get invited to play on Christmas the following season; Oklahoma City beat Indiana in a seven-game NBA Finals last season. The Eastern Conference champion Pacers are among the Christmas snubs this year, after losing Tyrese Haliburton to an Achilles tear that will sideline him for the entirety of this season and seeing Myles Turner opt to sign with Milwaukee in free agency. The Knicks will be playing their 58th Christmas game, extending their NBA record. The first Christmas game in league history was at Madison Square Garden in 1947. Boston, Philadelphia and Phoenix played on Christmas last season and didn't make the Dec. 25 cut this season, replaced by Cleveland (which was the East's No. 1 seed), Houston (which landed Kevin Durant in an offseason blockbuster from the Suns) and the Thunder. Cleveland and the Thunder are playing on Christmas for the first time since 2018. The Rockets have a Christmas game for the first time since 2019. James, if he plays on the holiday, will be making his 20th Christmas appearance in his record 23 NBA season. Only 12 NBA franchises have 20 Christmas games, and James could soon have that many as a player. And it'll be a big NBA holiday in Texas: All three of the state's teams are playing on Christmas for the first time. Opening night NBC's return to the NBA broadcast world officially starts with opening night on Oct. 21, when the Thunder (favored by 6.5 points) will receive their championship rings before playing host to Durant and the Rockets in the first game of the season. That will be followed by Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler and Golden State taking on James, Luka Doncic and the Lakers (-3.5) in the second game of the NBC doubleheader. Those are the only two games on opening night. MLK Day Peacock and NBC will have four games on Jan. 19, which is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The matchups: Milwaukee at Atlanta on Peacock at 1 p.m. Eastern, followed by three games on NBC: Oklahoma City at Cleveland at 2:30 p.m. Eastern, Dallas at New York at 5 p.m. Eastern and Boston at Detroit at 8 p.m. Eastern. Memphis, which typically plays on the holiday, is not this season. The Grizzlies will be returning from Europe, after facing Orlando on Jan. 15 in Berlin and Jan. 18 in London.

All-Star closer Josh Hader lands on IL with shoulder strain as Astros' injury issues continue
HOUSTON — Add another injury to a Houston Astros season that has been defined by them. The Astros placed All-Star closer Josh Hader on the injured list Tuesday, one day after he reported shoulder discomfort and did not pitch in a save situation against the Boston Red Sox. The Astros only described Hader's injury as a left shoulder strain and backdated his IL stint to Aug. 11. The team has reinstated right-hander Shawn Dubin from the IL and recalled left-hander Colton Gordon from Triple A. Veteran Héctor Neris was designated for assignment. Advertisement Hader, 31, has never been on the injured list during his nine-year major-league career aside from a stint on the COVID-19 IL in August 2021 after he tested positive for the virus. According to Astros manager Joe Espada, Hader experienced pain in his shoulder after completing some of his plyometric work prior to Monday's game. Hader warmed up to pitch in Sunday's game at Yankee Stadium, but went unused after the Astros scored three runs to widen their lead and eliminate a save situation. The left-hander has converted 28 of his 29 save chances during a dominant season that produced his sixth All-Star selection. His 28 saves trail only San Diego's Robert Suarez and Kansas City's Carlos Estévez for the major-league lead. Hader's 2.05 ERA is lower than that of both Suarez and Estévez. Among American League closers, only Seattle's Andrés Muñoz and Boston's Aroldis Chapman have lower ERAs than Hader, who is in the second season of a five-year, $95 million contract he signed last winter. Hader has appeared in 42 of the Astros' first 67 wins while only throwing in six losses, underscoring his importance to a team that thrives on its run prevention and execution in close games. The Astros entered Tuesday with a 21-12 record in one-run games and 56-1 when leading after eight innings, two marks that are a testament to Hader's dominance. Setup man Bryan Abreu, he of a 1.67 ERA and 13.1 strikeouts per nine innings, is the most obvious option to take closing duties in Hader's absence. Nothing behind Abreu is as settled, meaning Espada may take a matchup-based approach before handing the ball to his substitute closer. Hader joins seven other Astros pitchers on an injured list that has grown as large as 18 players during this star-crossed season. Within the past week, starters Cristian Javier and Spencer Arrighetti have returned from long-term injuries — which at the time was encouraging news for the team's overall pitching health. Hader's shoulder discomfort now diminishes that progress. Spot the pattern. Connect the terms Find the hidden link between sports terms Play today's puzzle
