
327-acre Westmeath farm set to fetch over €5m at auction
The farm is at Annascannon, near the village of Killucan, Co Westmeath — for sale jointly with Trim-based auctioneers REA TE Potterton and Mullingar-based James L Murtagh Auctioneers. The auction will be conducted live at the Greville Arms Hotel in Mullingar and simultaneously online via the LSL Online Auctions platform.
The huge property will be presented in lots, before being offered in its entirety, with different lots offering some interesting aspects to this unique holding.

Lot 1 comprises 198 acres of land, which includes a quarry and inert waste facility that take up about 70 acres. The rest of it is a mixture of quality land, including excellent grazing land, about 16 acres of maize crop and some woodland.
'This central part of the property sits between the Royal Canal and the Dublin-Sligo railway line,' says selling agent Thomas Potterton. 'The old quarry is now exhausted but we have identified substantial and very clean sand and gravel deposits there.'
A geophysical report is available to interested parties, outlining the nature of these facilities, which may attract farming interests as well as purely commercial ones.
The auctioneers expect this lot to fetch in the region of €4m.

Lot 2 consists of 75 acres north of the Royal Canal with a stream running along its boundary.
'It's a very good block of farmland,' Mr Potterton said. 'It's laid out in a number of fields and the majority of it has just been cut for silage.' The price guide is €10,000-€11,000/acre.
Lot 3 is a 54-acre parcel south of the railway line.
'It's all in old pasture and has good road frontage and a water supply. We're guiding in the region of €9,000 per acre," Mr Potterton said.
'The location of this farm is very appealing. It's only about 5km from Kinnegad and the M4 motorway and 68km from Dublin. It makes it very accessible.'

Geopolitical uncertainty dulls business confidence, says survey
Almost a quarter of medium-sized businesses reported their activity was down compared to the same period last year, a new business confidence survey said. The survey carried out for lender Linked Finance found that business optimism amongst all Irish-based SMEs surveyed was 67% six months ago, but that has now dropped to 61%. One-in-three SMEs reported that that business results were lower year-on-year, an increase of 2% on the same period last year. Large and medium-sized SME businesses continue to drive job creation, with 36% of respondents from these areas reporting higher employee numbers year-on-year. Employment growth appears to focused in Dublin, with only one-in-10 firms outside Dublin reporting increased employee numbers. Overall, Dublin-based SMEs were performing better than those in the regions in terms of activity, the survey said, with 76% reporting trade was the same or higher – but for those based outside the capital, only 62% reported this was the case. The research suggests large businesses are holding up well, but medium sized firms of four to nine people have seen the biggest change year-on-year, with almost a quarter reporting that business activity is down compared to the same period last year. Only one-in-five medium-sized firms expect the third quarter of 2025 to bring a boost in business, compared to almost one-in-two when surveyed this time 12 months ago. Larger SMEs remain optimistic for Q3, with 46% expecting an upturn in business. Linked Finance CEO Niall O'Grady said that it was understandable that some businesses are adopting a cautious mode, concerned about tariffs or revising their forecasts. 'We live in uncertain times, and it is not surprising that SMEs in Ireland are tempering their outlook given constant reports, and now confirmation, about tariffs. This is combined with continuing conflict in both Europe and the Middle East. 'However, there are several positive take-aways from the data, particularly that large companies remain bullish for the next quarter – which is important as they employ the most people here. In addition, micro businesses are seeing a slight improvement while the retail and wholesale trade is showing some green shots.' The quarterly business confidence survey is conducted by Ipsos B&A on behalf of Linked Finance, amongst a sample of 360 business owners/managers countrywide.

Where is the government storing all its ‘vital data'? In a centre in Co Kildare, of course
THE GOVERNMENT'S NEW data centre has been delivered on time and on budget. This afternoon, Minister of State with special responsibility for Public Procurement, Digitalisation and eGovernment Emer Higgins, paid a visit to the new Government Data Centre at Backweston in Co Kildare. Construction on the data centre began in 2023 and was completed last month. However, work is still underway on the internal fit-out, which is due to be completed by the end of the year. This state-of-the-art building was developed under the European Union's recovery plan, NextGenerationEU. This recovery plan provides financial aid to EU States to combat the economic and social effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and make the European economy 'more resistant to future shocks'. Advertisement Ireland's allocation is €1.15 billion, and the government submitted its third payment request, with a value of €240 million, earlier this week. Ireland has already received its first and second payments of €324 million and €115 million respectively. The third payment request includes the expansion of the rehabilitation of peatlands, as well as further works on electrification of the transport networks in Cork and Drogheda. Meanwhile, a government spokesperson said that the new data centre will 'provide secure operations that will future proof the reliable delivery of essential digital services to the public'. Once the fit-out of the building is complete, the migration of services to the new facility is scheduled to begin early next year. Higgins said Backweston Data Centre is a 'fantastic example of how the NextGenerationEU funding is delivering real, tangible results'. She said the fact that the 'complex' build was completed on time and on budget is a 'testament to the skill and dedication of everyone involved'. She said the new data centre will use the 'latest and most efficient technologies to ensure that vital Government data is stored in a secure and energy-efficient way'. She also described it as a 'significant step forward in our digital transformation journey' and that it will 'ultimately help us to provide better public services'. Dr Venkatesh Uddameri, a Texas-based expert in water resources management, recently told the BBC that a typical data centre can use between 11 million and 19 million litres of water per day, roughly the same as a town of 30,000 to 50,000 people. Claire's stores to stay open after appointment of administrators
Administrators have been appointed to Claire's, putting around 2,150 jobs in Ireland and the UK at risk. The move was confirmed by the US owners of the fashion accessories retailer. Claire's has 306 stores in Ireland and the UK, 28 of them in Ireland. The owners said they had filed a formal notice to administrators from advisory firm Interpath. Interpath confirmed the appointment of Will Wright and Chris Pole as joint administrators. They are to seek a potential rescue deal for the chain, which has seen sales tumble in the face of weak consumer demand. Claire's stores in Ireland and the UK will remain open, according to the US-based Claire's group and the administrators. However, the adminstrators said that customers will no longer be able to make orders online. Online orders placed and dispatched prior to the administrators' appointment will be delivered as usual, Orders that have not yet been shipped will not be delivered and customers should not be charged for these, as payment is processed on dispatch. All staff will remain in their positions, the company said. Interpath said the administrators will be contacting all employees to "provide further information about what the administration means for them". Interpath Chief Cxecutive Will Wright said: "Over the coming weeks, we will endeavour to continue to operate all stores as a going concern for as long as we can, while we assess options for the company. "This includes exploring the possibility of a sale which would secure a future for this well-loved brand." It comes after the Claire's group filed for bankruptcy in a US court last week. It is the second time the company has done so, after first filing for the process in 2018. Claire's Chief Executive Chris Cramer said: "This decision, while difficult, is part of our broader effort to protect the long-term value of Claire's across all markets. "Taking this step will allow us to continue to trade the business while we explore the best possible path forward. "We are deeply grateful to our employees, partners and our customers during this challenging period." Information for customers All Claire's stores across Ireland and the UK will remain operational. Customers can continue to shop in-store as usual. However, customers will no longer be able to place orders online via Claire's Ireland and UK website. Online orders placed and dispatched prior to the joint administrators' appointment will be delivered as usual. The joint administrators will be unable to deliver orders placed online which have not yet shipped. Customers should not be charged for these orders, as payment is processed on dispatch. The joint administrators are unable to offer refunds for any items bought prior to appointment. It is recommended that all customers check the purchase protection arrangements with their debit or credit card provider (or similar payment provider) to ascertain whether a refund is available via another source. If no refund is available, customers should contact clairescustomers@ to lodge an unsecured claim in the administration. Customers with goods purchased after 13 August 2025 which are of unsatisfactory quality or which are not fit for purpose in accordance with consumer rights legislation should send proof of purchase and specific details relevant to the issue to clairescustomers@
