Sabah student defends anti-corruption rally, reminds leaders of past protests
KOTA KINABALU: A Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) student has defended the recent anti-corruption protest and symbolic act of burning a caricature of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, pointing out that Anwar once led similar demonstrations during his university days.
In a Facebook post, final-year student Fadhil Kasim reminded the public that when Anwar was a student leader at Universiti Malaya, he had also led a protest where he and others burned a book written by Malaysia's first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman.
'At that time, they believed the book was 'submersive', so Anwar and his group held a protest and even burned the book in public,' Fadhil wrote.
Fadhil said today's student protesters are being unfairly criticised by Anwar's supporters, including groups like Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia (Abim) and Angkatan Muda KeAdilan (AMK), who seem more interested in pleasing the Prime Minister than standing up for the people.
He added that the Gempur Rasuah 2.0 Rally at Lintasan Deasoka in Gaya Street over the weekend, where he and a friend burned a caricature of Anwar, was to highlight issues like corruption in Sabah and the water problems affecting students at UMS.
'People were quick to attack our actions and talk about morals and manners. But they ignored the bigger issue, the people's problems and corruption,' he said.
Fadhil said he believes Anwar might understand their actions if he remembered what he used to do as a student activist in the 1970s.
'But that is just wishful thinking. The truth is, Anwar is now the Prime Minister, not a student anymore,' he said.
Fadhil also pointed out that when Anwar was in the opposition, he often visited Sabah and spoke about issues like corruption, logging, poor roads, and Sabah's rights.
'Now it is different. He seems more focused on keeping the GRS (Gabungan Rakyat Sabah) government strong in his Madani administration … even though GRS is facing major corruption scandals,' he said.
Fadhil ended his post by identifying himself as 'the student who burned the caricature of Anwar,' and included the line: 'Madani: Protector of Sabah's corrupt.'
He also added a black and white photo of Anwar, and several others, in an act of setting fire to some items on the floor.

Another ministry recognised for its achievement is the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT), where reforms were driven through the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), which successfully reduced the approval time for Electric Vehicle Charging Bay Plan Certifications from 28 days to just three. He added that JBPM also expedited the approval process for non-system-based technical plan certifications, reducing it from 30 days to just seven. 'This was achieved through streamlined procedures and the strengthening of the e-Premis system and development of a central data repository, resulting in annual regulatory cost savings of RM1.776 million,' he said. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) successfully reduced barriers to financing in the aerospace sector, generating RM17 million in regulatory savings for 50 small and medium enterprises by boosting production capacity by up to 30 percent. 'Gross profit margins increased by over 20 percent through automation and certification, further strengthening the supply chain and creating more high-skilled jobs. Reforms are being intensified and improvements accelerated,' he said.

PAS distances from controversial FB post, says Johnny Lim's appointment should be celebrated
PETALING JAYA: PAS takes seriously the controversy involving a social media post by one of the party's division leaders speculating on the country's future leadership, says Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan. The PAS secretary-general, in a statement Wednesday (June 25), emphasised that the post, or any similar posts, were the personal views of the individual and completely contrary to the official policies, resolutions, and vision of PAS. "PAS is committed to and upholds the principles and reality of racial and religious diversity as a unique and valuable characteristic of our society that must be nurtured in the best possible way. "Racism or racialism in any form or colour has no place in PAS, nor does it fit with the broader culture and national aspirations of this country," he said. Takiyuddin said the appointment of Mejar Jeneral Datuk Johnny Lim Eng Seng as a Leftenan Jeneral of the Malaysian Armed Forces is a historic event that should be celebrated by all citizens. PPP Youth lashes out at criticism of first Malaysian Chinese lieutenant-general
KUALA LUMPUR: PPP Youth has criticised a politician whose now-deleted Facebook post had allegedly criticised the promotion of the nation's first three-star general of Chinese descent. In congratulating Lieutenant-General Johnny Lim Eng Seng, PPP Youth chief Sathiah Sudakaran said the promotion was a recognition of his outstanding service and contributions over 41 years. He said in the conext of Malaysia Madani and a progressive nation, race or religious background should never be the basis for appointments to key national positions. Sathiah said the wing took "serious exception" to the posting of Sungai Buloh Pas chief Zaharuddin Muhammad, for questioning the promotion. "Such a statement not only insults the individual appointed but also tarnishes the dignity of thousands of Malaysians who have contributed to the nation across various sectors, including in defence. "What is more concerning is that the remark indirectly undermines the trust placed by the Malaysian armed forces and questions the wisdom and authority of His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the supreme commander of the armed forces, in making this appointment. "This is not only disrespectful, but can also be seen as incitement and an affront to one of the nation's highest institutions." Sathiah said the authorities must take firm action against remark. "Racial politics must never be used as a tool to sow hatred and division among Malaysians who live in a diverse and multicultural society."
