
Manager denies health board sought to 'punish' trans row nurse
Ms Peggie and Dr Upton had an encounter on Christmas Eve 2023 that led to the nurse being suspended from work after a row over whether the doctor should be in the women's changing rooms at the Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy.Ms Glancy became involved in the case in late February 2024.Ms Glancy said a combination of diary commitments, sickness and annual leave meant she could not conduct interviews until late April and her final report into the matter was completed in December 2024.She told NHS Fife and Dr Upton's lawyer Jane Russell she believed staff "shouldn't be confronting colleagues" and that if someone had an issue or a problem with a colleague they should speak to a line manager.
The clinical nurse manager denied a suggestion from Ms Peggie's lawyer Naomi Cunningham she deliberately put off informing the nurse about further allegations against her.Ms Cunningham suggested the delays were because NHS Fife was in "turmoil" about whether the additional claims - regarding whether Ms Peggie had previously refused to engage with the doctor about a patient - could be "pinned" on the nurse.Ms Glancy said this was not true, as she had not shared any details of her findings with management.She also rejected the suggestion she was "very anxious" about challenging Dr Upton regarding evidence in the case.Ms Cunningham asked if Ms Glancy had looked into claims by Ms Peggie that the junior doctor was a "known troublemaker", to which she replied that she was looking into the Christmas Eve incident, not Dr Upton.

The lawyer queried whether the fact that Dr Kate Searle, Dr Upton's supervisor, had sent emails to other members of staff expressing support for the junior doctor had compromised Ms Glancy's investigation.Ms Cunningham said Dr Searle - who gave evidence over two days earlier in the week - had been "vigorously briefing" against Ms Peggie with her actions. Ms Glancy replied that none of the people in the email chain were involved in her investigation and therefore it did not affect her findings. Dr Searle gave evidence during the internal investigation and also attended Dr Upton's session with Ms Glancy, which Ms Peggie's legal team said was bending the rules.Ms Glancy said it was allowed for people in a tribunal to have a colleague there for support, and "not unusual".
No notes kept for second meeting
Ms Cunningham suggested an email exchange between Dr Upton and Ms Glancy regarding the 18 December incident indicated "a clear steer" to the clinical nurse manager to not investigate it any further.The lawyer said this was because it would be proven to be false and "should be career-ending for Dr Upton."Ms Glancy disagreed with this, saying she had continued to investigate the 18 December incident by speaking to a healthcare assistant on shift on that day. She later added she felt the healthcare worker's evidence - that Dr Upton and and Ms Peggie had a conversation but she could not recall details - did not contradict Dr Upton's prior claim that Ms Peggie had left without saying anything, as it was uncertain how much was said between them. Ms Glancy confirmed she had a second meeting with Dr Upton after their initial session during the investigation, where they discussed changes to the doctor's evidence.She said these changes were mostly grammatical but admitted there were no notes kept of this meeting.Anne Hamilton, an HR adviser with NHS Fife, later told the tribunal this was "not ideal" but that meetings did not need to always have notes taken.
The respective legal teams also clashed over language used by Ms Cunningham, where she repeatedly referred to Dr Upton as male and said this was the "correct sex".Ms Russell said this was creating a hostile environment for the witness and confusing Ms Glancy into accidently misgendering the doctor - something Ms Cunningham denied. Ms Hamilton later said she agreed Ms Glancy's report had been made without interference from others.She added Dr Searle giving both evidence and then supporting Dr Upton during the investigation was not ideal, but there was nothing in policy against it. The tribunal continues.

She's since undergone multiple surgeries, been treated in intensive care, and is now battling not just physical injuries, but intense emotional trauma. And as if the ordeal wasn't already harrowing enough, her family have been hit with the devastating news that her insurance provider won't pay for her medical repatriation to the UK. ‘Fit and healthy woman' left paralysed at 44 after GP dismissed her ‘work stress' headaches
A "FIT and healthy" woman was left paralysed after suffering from headaches she thought were caused by "work stress". Alicja Faryniarz, 44, said she knew something "wasn't right" but her symptoms were constantly dismissed by doctors as migraines or sinus problems. 12 12 12 12 The accountant began suffering from severe headaches during her 20s which led to fainting episodes and extreme fatigue. However each time she went to her GP, she says they "brushed it aside" and prescribed her with painkillers despite her suffering "intense pain". But in September last year, she suffered a stroke while playing a tennis match. Alicja collapsed on the court and was taken to hospital where she was diagnosed with brain arteriovenous malformation (AVM) - an ultra rare brain disease. AVM affects less than 1 per cent of Brits and is caused by tangled blood vessels that create irregular connections between arteries and veins in the brain. They are usually congenital - present from birth - but they can form later in life and people with the disease rarely show symptoms, according to the NHS. Alicja had a three-inch AVM which ruptured and paralysed the right side of her body and also left her in a coma for three days. She is now warning of the "hidden" dangers of the rare condition which she had no idea she was born with. Alicja, from Cobham, Surrey, said: "My life ended on the day I had the stroke and I'm still trying to get it back. "I've had to give up my life as I can no longer enjoy the things I loved like cycling, running, dancing, walking my dog, the list goes on. "If I was given a CT scan instead of doctors brushing it aside, I believe they would have found it and none of this would have happened. I'm no longer the same person." Alicja believes her AVM rupture was triggered by stress at work which weakened her blood vessels. She also believes a blood donation she made the week before could have made her blood thicker, with exercise then putting extra stress on her veins. She said: "I had a lot of plates spinning and life was very overwhelming at times. 12 12 "I would have these severe headaches where I would have to pause work and lie down for a moment and take some time until it passed." Alicja first noticed symptoms in her early 20s, suffering with severe headaches and fainting episodes. She said doctors gave her painkillers to deal with the "horrific pain" and she continued with her daily life, still exercising regularly and going to work. But following her move to the UK from Poland in 2004 her symptoms got worse as she began suffering with more frequent headaches and extreme fatigue. In 2021 - during the Covid-19 pandemic - she had her first extreme fainting episode, collapsing in her bathroom and suffering a black eye and concussion. Alicja said: "I had collapsed and hit my head on the bathroom tiles. "An ambulance was called but they only arrived the next day and as I had Covid at the time they wouldn't take me to the hospital." Alicja believes that if she was taken to the hospital and had a brain scan performed, they would have found the AVM and her life would still be normal. 'I thought I was dying' The 44-year-old went on to suffer three more fainting episodes until her stroke on September 3 last year. Recalling the day, Alicja said: "I had worked from home and had travelled to Esher Tennis Club for an end of summer competition. "The past weekend I had been on a 115km bike ride and went on a walk with friends and to be honest I wasn't feeling to well but I had gotten used to it. "I played the first game fine, but then during the second match I hadn't played for very long when my vision went blurry and I had a really intense headache. "I remember collapsing to the floor not being able to move or speak and being in agony - I was terrified and thought I was dying." Alicja said an ambulance didn't arrive for two hours before she was transported to St Peter's Hospital in Chertsey where she was put into an induced coma. What is an arteriovenous malformation (AVM)? An AVM is a tangle of blood vessels in thebrain or on the brain surface. This causes blood to bypass the usual network of vessels and flows directly from arteries to veins. Symptoms may vary depending on the size and location of the AVM within the brain. While AVMs commonly cause no symptoms at all, they can lead to seizures, headaches, speech disturbances and visual disturbances. Sometimes a brain AVM is found after the blood vessels burst and bleed, known as a haemorrhage. The cause of brain AVMs isn't clear. Most people who have them are born with them, but they can form later in life. They are typically discovered between the ages of 20 and 40. Source: NHS She was then transported to London's St George's Hospital and placed on the ICU unit, waking up three days later on September 6. Alicja said: "When I woke up I was unable to move the right side of my body and I couldn't speak. "I had to physically pick up my right and and leg with my right hand just to move it. "Half my body was gone, like it never existed, like someone had just taken it away. "It took me two weeks just to be able to move my middle finger a little." 12 12 12 12 Alicja stayed at St George's hospital until September 22, when she was moved to Woking Community Hospital for just over a month. Now a year on Alicja can talk, move her right arm, but she can no longer walk without the aid of a walking stick or wheelchair. She added: "If you know or think something is wrong make sure you get it checked out. "I'm sharing my story as I want to spread awareness that it could happen to anybody." What are the symptoms of stroke? The FAST method – which stands for Face, Arms, Speech, Time – is the easiest way to remember the most common symptoms of stroke: F = Face drooping - if one side of a person's face is dropped or numb then ask them to smile, if it's uneven then you should seek help. A = Arm weakness - if one arm is weak or numb then you should ask the person to raise both arms. If one arm drifts downwards then you might need to get help S = Speech difficulty - if a person's speech is slurred then this could be a sign of a stroke T = Time to call 999 - if a person has the signs above then you need to call 999 in the UK or 911 in the US for emergency care. Health chiefs reckon the scheme could prevent up to 100,000 cases of the disease. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 The vaccine will be available for free at sexual health clinics in England Credit: PA The jab will be available free of charge at local sexual health clinics to people deemed at highest risk of catching gonorrhoea. This includes gay and bisexual men who have a recent history of multiple sexual partners and a bacterial STI in the previous 12 months. Patients will receive an existing jab - the 4CMenB vaccine for meningitis B - which has been found to nearly halve the chances of catching gonorrhoea in adults. The jab is already routinely given to babies to protect them from MenB, but its protection wears off as they grow up. Vaccination could also head off growing concerns about superbug versions of the infection, which are resistant to antibiotics. Dr Amanda Doyle, NHS national director for primary care and community services, said: "This vaccine is already used to protect against Men B and is proven to be effective against gonorrhoea, preventing the spread of infection and reducing the rising rates of antibiotic-resistant strains." Minister for Public Health and Prevention Ashley Dalton added: "Rolling out this world-leading gonorrhoea vaccination programme in sexual health clinics in England represents a major breakthrough in preventing an infection that has reached record levels. "This government's world-first vaccination programme will help turn the tide on infections, as well as tackling head-on the growing threat of antibiotic resistance. "I strongly encourage anyone who is eligible to come forward for vaccination, to protect not only yourselves but also your sexual partners." Patients getting the gonorrhoea vaccine will also be offered jabs for mpox, human papillomavirus (HPV), and hepatitis A and B at their appointment. What is Gonorrhoea The programme rollout comes as gonorrhoea diagnoses reach their highest levels since records began in 1918. In 2023, a record 85,000 cases of the disease were reported in England — three times higher than in 2012. There's also been a concerning rise in "extensively drug resistant" gonorrhoea cases, sparking fear the STI could soon become "untreatable". Gonorrhoea is usually treated with a single dose of the antibiotic ceftriaxone, given as an injection or tablets at GP surgeries or a sexual health clinics. Who will be elligible for the jab? NHS England said clinics will target the highest risk people for its gonorrhoea vaccine campaign. From August vaccines will be offered to: Gay or bisexual men who have recently had multiple sexual partners Gay or bisexual men who have recently been diagnosed with an STI Transgender women or non-binary people who were born male Clinics may use their discretion to offer to sex workers or anyone who has recently had a bacterial STI Data from 2023 show that 40,586 out of England's total 85,223 gonorrhoea cases were among men who had sex with men, making them the highest risk group. A further 15,000 were among heterosexual men and 22,000 were among women. But in some cases this isn't effective, as the bacteria has developed the ability to survive and multiply even when exposed to the antibiotic. Since first being detected in England in 2015, 42 cases of ceftriaxone-resistant gonorrhoea have been reported. Fifteen of these cases were extensively drug-resistant. "Although numbers remain low, cases are being detected more frequently," the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) previously said. Consultant epidemiologist UKHSA, Dr Sema Mandal called the gonorrhoea jab programme "hugely welcome". "We're currently seeing very concerning numbers of gonorrhoea, including even more worryingly antibiotic resistant gonorrhoea," she said. "The vaccine will give much needed protection to those that need it most - making the UK a world leader in the fight against gonorrhoea. "And it's excellent to see that at the same time other important vaccines will continue to be offered in sexual health services to those eligible, protecting against mpox, hepatitis A and B, and HPV. "Sexually transmitted infections aren't just an inconvenience – they can have a major impact on your health and your sexual partners, so if offered I strongly urge you to get these jabs, you'll be protecting yourself as well as others. Don't put it off and regret it later." Along with protecting thousands of people from the STI, health chiefs say the scheme will save the NHS more than £7.9 million over the next decade. Gonorrhoea is an STI that's passed on through unprotected sex. Many people do not have any symptoms but if it is left untreated it can spread and lead to infertility. Getting the STI during pregnancy can increase your risk of premature birth and your baby having a low birth weight. There's also a risk the infection could spread to your baby's eyes during birth, which causes blindness if it's not treated with antibiotics.
