Agnyathavasi OTT Release Date: When and where to watch Rangayana Raghu & Ravishankar Gowda's Kannada film online
Agnyathavasi OTT Release Date: After a long wait, Kannada cinema lovers finally have some good news! Agnyathavasi, the much-awaited murder mystery starring Rangayana Raghu and Paavana Gowda, is not only running in theatres but is also set for its digital release soon. Here's everything you need to know about the OTT release, what the film is about, and why the delay happened.
When and where can you watch Agnyathavasi online?
If you missed catching Agnyathavasi in theatres, don't worry! According to OTTPlay, the movie is all set to premiere on Zee5 on May 16, 2025. Along with the digital release, it will also be shown on television on Zee Kannada. Zee Network had picked up both the satellite (TV) and digital (OTT) rights even before the movie was released, which is a big deal for Kannada films these days.
Why was Agnyathavasi delayed for so long?
At the trailer launch, producer Hemanth M Rao revealed that they had finished the film over a year ago but decided to wait before releasing it. They were hoping for better market conditions and wanted to get a good deal for the post-theatrical rights, which they eventually did with Zee Network. While waiting was a gamble, it seems to have worked out. Now, fans of director Janardhan Chikkanna, who made a mark with Gultoo, are excited to see his next big story unfold.
What is Agnyathavasi all about?
Agnyathavasi is set in the peaceful backdrop of a sleepy Malnad village in the 1990s. The story kicks off when a local landlord dies under mysterious circumstances. A sharp police inspector smells something fishy, but with no clear evidence and no major crimes reported in years, cracking the case becomes a real challenge. Other than the lead duo, Agnyathavasi also stars Ravishankar Gowda, Siddu Moolimani, Sharath Lohithashwa, and Arvind Kuplikar, among others.
This Charan Raj musical is directed by Janardhan Chikkanna. Producer Hemanth M Rao, best known for movies like Sapta Sagaradaache Ello, has backed Agnyathavasi under his banner, Dakshayini Talkies. Interestingly, Janardhan chose Rangayana Raghu as the lead because he was impressed by his performance in Cyanide, a film based on real-life events after the Rajiv Gandhi assassination.

Thug Life: Tamil Nadu Govt Allows Early Morning Release Amid Kamal Haasan's Language Row
Last Updated: 'Thug Life' is a joint production of Raaj Kamal Films International and Mani Ratnam's Madras Talkies, and will be distributed by Red Giant Movies. The Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday granted permission to the makers of 'Thug Life', the much-anticipated film by veteran filmmaker Mani Ratnam and superstar Kamal Haasan, to hold special early morning screenings on the day of its release — Thursday, June 5. The decision was made following a formal request submitted by Raaj Kamal Films International, Kamal Haasan's production house backing the movie. According to the government's order, the film will be allowed to have five shows on the day of release, with the first show beginning at 9 a.m. on Thursday and the last one concluding by 2 a.m. on Friday. Special screenings outside the standard time slots are typically granted to big-budget or high-profile films in Tamil Nadu, particularly when led by popular stars or renowned filmmakers. The announcement, however, comes at a time when 'Thug Life' is facing controversy over a statement made by Kamal Haasan during the film's audio launch. The actor-politician claimed that 'Kannada is born out of Tamil," a remark that sparked strong reactions in Karnataka. The Karnataka High Court recently suggested that Kamal issue an apology, but the star has refused to do so. However, the superstar wrote a letter to the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday stating that the row over his remarks on the origins of the Kannada language is a result of a misunderstanding. In his letter, Kamal Haasan also maintained that he is against the dominance of one language over another. As a result of the actor's refusal to issue an outright apology, the film's release in Karnataka has been postponed indefinitely. Despite the controversy, 'Thug Life' is one of the most anticipated Tamil films of the year. The project marks the reunion of Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam after nearly four decades, following their legendary 1987 collaboration 'Nayakan', considered a milestone in Indian cinema. The gangster drama features a star-studded cast, including Silambarasan T.R. in a key role, alongside Trisha, Nasser, Joju George, Abhirami, Ashok Selvan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sanya Malhotra, and Ali Fazal. The music for the film has been composed by Academy Award-winner A.R. Rahman, further adding to the excitement around the release. 'Thug Life' is a joint production of Raaj Kamal Films International and Mani Ratnam's Madras Talkies, and will be distributed by Red Giant Movies. With high expectations from fans and film critics alike, the movie's performance at the box office — particularly in Tamil Nadu — will be closely watched as it hits the screens tomorrow. 'Thank you for your support': Kamal Haasan to TN people amid language row
Actor-politician Kamal Haasan on Wednesday thanked the people of Tamil Nadu for standing with him amid the controversy related to his remark that Kannada was born out of Tamil language. Addressing a press conference in Chennai with his co-actors from the movie 'Thug Life', Haasan said, "I should thank the entire state of Tamil Nadu which stood behind me." He also spoke about the hard work of the crew and international quality of technicians who worked on the film that is scheduled to release on June 5, reported Press Trust of India. His remark about Kannada at a function to announce the film's release stirred a controversy in Karnataka, followed by calls for ban on his film in the state. The actor had approached the Karnataka High Court seeking directions to prevent any obstruction to the film's release in the state. However, the court criticised his comments and asked him to apologise. "If it is a reply of apology, we will take it. There is no apology in it. You may be Kamal Haasan or anybody, you cannot hurt the sentiments of the masses,' the High Court bench said on Tuesday, warning the actor against misusing his right to free speech and expressing its displeasure with the lack of an apology. "Freedom of expression cannot be extended to the extent of hurting someone's sentiment, of a mass in words cannot be taken back, and they can only be cannot unscramble the scrambled egg," the court added. The next hearing is set for June 10. Meanwhile, the producers of Thug Life told the Karnataka High Court that the film would not be released in the state on June 5.
