Blue Jays capitalize on Yankees' mistakes, seal series win
Chris Bassitt struck out eight, Bo Bichette hit a two-run homer and the host Toronto Blue Jays defeated the sloppy New York Yankees 8-4 on Wednesday night.
The Yankees committed four errors and other uncredited misplays in the rubber match of a three-game series as the Blue Jays rebuilt their lead over the Yankees in the American League East to four games.
Bassitt (11-4) allowed four runs (three earned), three hits and no walks in 7 1/3 innings.
Aaron Judge hit a two-run home run and Jasson Dominguez and Anthony Volpe hit solo shots for the Yankees.
Dominguez's liner to right opened the scoring in the second.
Yankees starter Max Fried (11-4) retired his first seven batters before running into trouble. George Springer looped a one-out single to center and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. scorched an RBI double into the left-field corner. Alejandro Kirk walked and Addison Barger loaded the bases on an infield hit to third. Ernie Clement lined a single to center to give Toronto a 2-1 lead.
Volpe homered to left center with one out in the fifth.
Toronto scored twice in the home fifth without a hit. Davis Schneider and Springer walked and advanced on a wild pitch. Both scored when Fried fielded Guerrero's squibber up the third-base line and made an errant throw to catcher J.C. Escarra.
The Yankees tied the game in the sixth. Trent Grisham reached second on Guerrero's error on a grounder to first. Judge launched a sinker over the wall in right center to move into sixth on the all-time Yankees list with 352 homers.
Toronto regained the lead in the bottom of the inning. Clement tripled when right fielder Cody Bellinger lost his fly ball in the twilight. Myles Straw doubled into the left-field corner to chase Fried, who had a bloodied left pinkie from throwing his curveball.
With Jonathan Loaisiga pitching, Ben Rice's error on pinch hitter Will Wagner's grounder to first allowed Straw to score.
Fried gave up six runs (four earned), six hits and three walks with three strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone and pitching coach Matt Blake were ejected in the seventh after Volpe was called out on strikes.
Toronto added two insurance runs in the seventh when Guerrero singled and Bichette homered against Scott Effross.

Blue Jays' Alejandro Kirk placed on seven-day IL
Article content The Jays are expected to add to their roster as Thursday's 6 p.m. MLB trade deadline approaches. Article content Sunday, the club was forced to subtract a key piece to their league-leading lineup when all-star catcher Alejandro Kirk was placed on the seven-day concussion injury list. Article content Article content Kirk is in the midst of a break-out season, both at the plate and behind it, but he did take a foul ball flush off his mask in the second inning of Saturday's 6-1 win over the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park. Article content Article content His bat in the middle of the lineup will be missed, but this Jays team, if anything, has shown to be quite resilient in times of duress. Article content For now, Tyler Heineman is expected to fill the void, no easy task it must be stated. Article content Heineman himself was placed on the concussion IL earlier this season. Article content He has pieced together a solid year for the Blue Jays. Article content Still, Heineman will need to step up as he faces his biggest test of the season. Article content Ali Sanchez was called up to replace Kirk. Article content With all due respect to Sanchez, he looked out of his element when he was first called up by the big-league club. Article content At this stage barring some move out of the blue, the Jays were left with no other choice. Article content Kirk has been one of the primary catalysts to the Jays' surprising season. Yankees acquire infielder Amed Rosario in trade with Nationals
NEW YORK — The scuffling New York Yankees added infield depth on Saturday night, acquiring Amed Rosario from the Washington Nationals for pitcher Clayton Beeter and a minor leaguer. Article content 'When I heard where I was going, I kind of didn't believe it,' Rosario said through an interpreter in Minnesota, where the Nationals beat the Twins 9-3. 'I mean, at some point I kind of knew I was going to get traded, but I didn't know it was going to be today.' Article content Article content The move came hours after New York said star slugger Aaron Judge is headed to the injured list — and one day after the Yankees obtained third baseman Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies for two pitching prospects. Article content Article content McMahon made his Yankees debut on Saturday in a 9-4 loss to Philadelphia. New York is 21-28 following a 35-20 start and has slipped a season-high 6 1/2 games behind AL East-leading Toronto. Article content 'He's actually been a guy who we've tried to kind of get the last couple of years to varying degrees,' Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. 'Provides some defensive versatility, speed and really gets lefties, so I think it kind of makes our bench and the balance of our roster a little more workable.' Article content The versatile Rosario likely will be used mostly at third base, second base and outfield corners, and he also can play shortstop. He's a right-handed hitter with an .816 OPS against left-handed pitching this season, making him a good fit for a platoon with McMahon. Article content Article content McMahon and second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. both bat left-handed. And shortstop Anthony Volpe, a right-handed hitter, is batting just .217 in his third major league season. Article content The 29-year-old Rosario was hitting .270 with five home runs, 18 RBIs and a .736 OPS in 46 games and 158 plate appearances with Washington overall. Article content 'I helped a lot, I think,' Rosario said. 'Especially the young players. I kind of showed them the hard work I put every day, so I hope they take that from me.' Article content Rosario was one of baseball's highest-rated prospects when he broke into the big leagues with the New York Mets in August 2017 at age 21. He is a .273 career hitter with 68 homers, 110 stolen bases and a .707 OPS in nine major league seasons. He also has played for Cleveland, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Tampa Bay Rays and the Cincinnati Reds.
