
Hotel chain Accor to manage Wairakei Resort Taupō, plans renovations and rebrand
'We are working with the owner on investment and branding strategies to deliver the strongest returns and best long-term prospects.
'The hotels will then undergo extensive renovations to align with their new brand promises.'
Accor owns and operates 19 hotel brands in the Pacific region and more than 45 worldwide.
Each property's brand identity will be confirmed in the next two years when their repositioning strategies are completed.
'Selecting the right brand and developing an investment strategy for each hotel requires an intensive effort and we continue to closely evaluate each market and opportunity,' Yazbeck said.
'We will communicate more once we have finalised the strategy for each hotel, but suffice to say, our commitment is to create multi-faceted experiences that inspire travellers and locals, while unleashing new and untapped opportunities that will shape these hotels for a strong future.'
Bayview is a hospitality company run by the Loh family, who founded its parent company, Oriental Holdings Berhad, in 1963.
Oriental Holdings Berhad has owned Wairakei Resort since 1991, under a separate subsidiary called Kah New Zealand, and also owns the now-shuttered Chateau Tongariro.
Wairakei Resort, set 10 minutes' drive north of Taupō, is a 187-room hotel within the Wairakei natural thermal valley. It's home to a day spa, nine-hole golf course, geothermal pools, dining venues and conference spaces.
The Chateau Tongariro is not included in the Accor deal. Its fate remains unknown, although Whakapapa Holdings expressed interest in breathing new life into the heritage building in January.
Handing over management of Wairakei Resort and the Australian properties to Accor will lead to Bayview focusing solely on its eight remaining hotels in Malaysia and Singapore.
Accor's expanding portfolio has made it the largest hotel operator in Australia and New Zealand and the sixth-largest hospitality company in the world.
Confidence in the New Zealand market, where it has 46 hotels, is underscored by two new developments that are set to open in Auckland this year.
TRIBE on Fort St is scheduled to open in September, while JO&JOE – a hotel brand established in 2016 to target younger travellers – is also making headway in the CBD as the first of its kind in the Pacific.

MediaWorks' back to basics approach working
MediaRoom column: After a dismal few years MediaWorks looks like it is getting some of its mojo back. The company's audience share in the 25 to 54 age group, known in the industry as the money zone, is at its highest since 2020 and, at 58 percent, is well ahead of its rival NZME on 31percent. Strong performances from brands like Mai FM, The Breeze, More FM and The Rock have driven increased revenues as well as ratings. In its just-announced result for the year ending December 31, 2024, radio and digital revenue improved by $4m or nearly 3 percent to $150m. It was a good effort in a tight advertising market, but the rising star of the business is the 'out-of-home' (billboard) arm. Revenue was up nearly $6m (12 percent) to $51m. An increasing amount of that revenue came from programmatic digital out-of-home (pDOOH) sales which jumped 83 percent compared with the market average of 23 percent. pDOOH is an automated system where buyers can set the conditions (ie. time of day, location, weather conditions etc.) under which they would buy slots and when providers agree the ads are automatically sent to digital billboards. Given that the radio market is mature and close to being maxed-out in revenue terms the out-of-home business is increasingly important to MediaWorks. Unlike other forms of media, out-of-home can't be blocked, muted or skipped. If you are in the vicinity of a billboard you are going to see it. MediaWorks' chairman, Barclay Nettlefold, who represents the owners, Australian private equity firm Quadrant, will be patting himself on the back for appointing Wendy Palmer to the CEO role in August 2023. Nettlefold took himself off the board after Cam Wallace, a former Air New Zealand executive, was appointed CEO in 2021. Wallace's two-year reign was marked by the expensive failure of Today FM. The talkback station was MediaWorks' challenge to Newstalk ZB but failed to fire despite millions being poured into it. After Wallace resigned to take up a role at Qantas, Nettlefold rejoined the board and hired Palmer. Palmer, who had previously been head of radio at MediaWorks when it also owned TV3, is known for her focus on revenue and deep knowledge of commercial radio. So far, Palmer has resisted the temptation to tackle Newstalk ZB head-on like Wallace did. It means a tantalisingly large pot of money is out of reach, but Palmer has stayed focused on the music brands and cut costs. The wages bill is down $2 million year-on-year. The company is still losing money, $16m in the latest financial year, but this is due to the high debt level if carries, a legacy of the company's past. The interest bill for the latest financial year was $20 million. Changing of the PR guard If further proof was needed that the world of public relations consultancies has evolved significantly in New Zealand it came at last week's PRINZ awards. Pead PR won the supreme award for its role in the promoting the world's biggest haka at Eden Park last year and other categories were dominated by newer firms like One Plus One Communications and Special PR. One Plus One won Large Consultancy of the Year. Last year it shared the accolade with Special PR which was runner-up this time. Some of the big-name firms of the past either didn't enter or didn't feature. In the past year, former heavyweight Senate has closed. And major players like Sweeney Vesty, Baldwin Boyle and Network PR don't operate at the scale they once did. Industry leaders Deborah Pead and Claudia Macdonald (Mango Communications) have recently eased back or retired. One Plus One's Kelly Bennett, Max Burt and Special's Kelly Grindle are at the forefront of the generational change flowing through the local PR industry. Anna Cottrell honoured Wellington journalist and documentary maker Anna Cottrell is made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the King's Birthday honours list. Cottrell started her career as a TV reporter on 'The South Tonight' a regional news programme in Christchurch in 1978. Her passion for current affairs saw her quickly move to directing longer items on TV One's Close Up. In 1988 Cottrell became a freelance documentary maker and her work focused on the experience of immigrants in New Zealand. Her interest in military history led to a television series on The Great War and the impact it had on people's lives. The five-part series (33 episodes) screened on TV3. Most recently, Cottrell produced Shine On Katherine Mansfield a series about the legacy of New Zealand's famous short story writer. Cottrell, who is known for her dedication to the craft and humility told Newsroom 'I only accepted it [the honour] on the last possible day on behalf of the film crews, editors, graphic designers, and musicians – my colleagues over many years.'

Tug sent abroad to make way for new boat
For more than two decades the tug boat Otago has been a familiar sight, plying the Otago Harbour channel with large ships in tow. But next week it will be given a fond wave by Port Otago staff as it is hitched to the stern of a ship and towed across the Tasman to Sydney. Port Otago marine and infrastructure general manager Grant Bicknell said it had been sold to an Australian commercial marine towage service and would eventually be based in Cairns. All of its windows have been boarded up to handle big-sea conditions and it was expected to depart on Wednesday. He said Otago was sold so the port could buy a new $15 million 70-tonne Damen ASD 2312 tug. The purchase is part of Port Otago's strategy to be New Zealand's "always open" port, capable of handling the biggest ships visiting the country. Port Otago chief executive Kevin Winders said the new tug was a key piece of infrastructure that would allow the port to be big-ship capable. "We already have the three other essential components in place — the multi-purpose wharf, at 430m long and a berth depth of 14m; consent to deepen the Lower Harbour channel to 15m and a new state-of-the-art dredge on order. "By January 2026 we will also have the tug fleet we need — that is a fleet capable of handling container vessels up to 10,000TEU and larger bulk ships. "It's also relevant that these bigger vessels have lower carbon footprints per container movement." It would join the tug Taiaroa (a Damen 70-tonne bollard pull) and tug Arihi (a 30-tonne bollard pull). Mr Bicknell said to manoeuvre a 10,000TEU container vessel in the swing basin and on to the Multipurpose Wharf required two 70-tonne bollard-pull tugs. Alongside the capability advantages, the upgrade also reduced the tug fleet's maintenance risk and provided a better carbon outcome, he said. "The Damen tug's modern Euro 6 diesel engine uses two-thirds as much fuel as the 21-year-old Otago. "It has excellent manoeuvrability because of its compact shape, patented Twin Fin skeg configuration and twin Azimuth thrusters." He said the single winch design was another feature that had both operation and safety benefits. "Older tugs have two winches — one for fore and one for aft — but the Damen ASD 2312 has only one centrally-placed winch that's integrated into the tug's superstructure. "The central positioning means that the winch is capable of towing over the bow and over the stern. "As a result, the deck is more spacious, free of clutter and safer." The new tug is under construction in the Damen Changde shipyard in China and is expected to arrive early next year.

Strengthening cyber resilience in superannuation
In early April, cybercriminals infiltrated multiple superannuation providers using stolen credentials to drain half a million dollars, while four Australians saw their retirement savings vanish overnight. Investigators are racing to piece together the scale of the breach, emphasizing the growing cybersecurity risks threatening Australia's AU$4.2 trillion retirement savings pool. With 12.6 million superannuation members exposed in recent attacks, the question is no longer if fraudsters will strike, but how the industry can stay ahead in this battle. Even though the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) praised multifactor authentication (MFA) as "one of the most effective controls an organisation can implement" in 2023, the rapid evolution of cybercrime demands more sophisticated defences. Limits of MFA in a changing threat landscape MFA remains one of the critical security measures, requiring users to verify their identity with two or more credentials, which adds an extra layer of friction to deter attacks in the login process. However, cybercriminals are also adapting, using modern tactics such as phishing, social engineering and AI-powered techniques to bypass these defences. Recent superannuation breaches highlight another vulnerability in the digital landscape: inadequate password practices. Many individuals still reuse passwords across platforms, unintentionally simplifying the task for cybercriminals who exploit stolen credentials. Attackers often conduct these crimes unnoticed, causing considerable financial damage before they are detected. Trade-off between cybersecurity and user experience According to the True Cost of Fraud Study by LexisNexis Risk Solutions, Australian organisations saw a 66% year-on-year increase in fraud, with every dollar lost costing firms AUD$3.68. This trend highlights the urgency for a more adaptive and layered approach to fraud prevention. At the same time, customers today expect both security and convenience. Applying MFA to every interaction could be a more robust approach but excessive friction can lead to abandonment, indirectly discouraging users from monitoring their accounts due to higher friction, making them less likely to notice when they have become victims of an attack. A more nuanced, risk-based approach that applies the right level of security based on the context and risks of each interaction allows organisations to detect and disrupt complex fraud in real time without adding unnecessary friction. By aligning protection with risk, businesses can strengthen security without compromising customer experiences. A comprehensive defence strategy involves multiple layers, and each layer strengthens defence against fraudsters. This ensures that if one security measure fails, others remain in place to detect and mitigate fraudulent activity. Key measures should include identity verification, device intelligence, behavioural intelligence and real-time risk scoring: Risk assessments analyse contextual risk signals, such as device reputation, IP geolocation, network patterns and login behaviours. This allows institutions to assess the risk level of each interaction. AI models analyse these signals in real time to assign a risk score, deciding whether extra authentication is necessary. AI-powered identity verification ensures that the individual behind the digital interaction is genuine. Comparing identity details with public records and data from multiple providers further validates the authenticity of the identity. Fraud assessments assess risk associated with an individual's identity by analysing a combination of digital, physical and behavioural signals. With holistic behavioural intelligence, such as keystroke dynamics, device interactions and mouse movements, this approach builds a dynamic profile of each user over time, and deviations from this may signal potentially bot or fraudulent activities. Adaptive authentication: Apply stronger verification for high-risk scenarios dynamically, while maintaining a smooth experience for legitimate users. Recent cyberattacks targeting superannuation funds highlight the need for a more robust digital defence strategy. APRA's multi-factor authentication guidelines offer a solid foundation, but static approaches alone are not enough to manage dynamic threats. Industry players must take a unified, layered approach to safeguard Australia's financial system.
