Tether, Circle to Face Intense Competition as TradFi Enters the Arena, Fireblocks Says

The competition for stablecoin dominance is entering a third phase and companies such as Tether, issuer of the largest token, and Circle, the No. 2, are setting up their positions as the industry faces increased regulation in the form of the European Union's Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) regime and U.S. legislation that is working its way through Congress, according to digital asset cryptography and custody specialists Fireblocks.
This latest stage will feature banks, large and small, as well as incumbent payment firms that are weighing up the best way to integrate the tokens into their existing businesses, according to Ran Goldi, SVP of payments at Fireblocks.
Stablecoins, blockchain-based tokens that mimic U.S. dollars for the most part, have become big business. Tether's USDT is the clear leader, with a market cap close to $145 billion. Circle's USDC has over $60 billion in circulation and the company is considering a public listing on the New York Stock Exchange. The stablecoin market could grow to $2 trillion by the end of 2028, Standard Chartered said in a Tuesday note.
'We are going to see banks issuing stablecoins, as they are under MiCA,' Goldi said in an interview. 'You are seeing financial institutions that are fintechs entering such as Robinhood, Ripple and Revolut. By the end of this year, you are going to see maybe 50 more stablecoins."
The industry has already passed through two stages, Goldi said. The first occurred when USDC went up against U.S. regulated trading firm Paxos, which had partnered with crypto exchange Binance to issue BUSD. For regulatory reasons Paxos had to drop BUSD and so Circle won that round, Goldi said, adding that Paxos' new USDG consortium is growing in stature and likely to play a major role in the future.
The second stage was between Circle and Tether.
'USDC was trying to be bigger than USDT, but then USDC tumbled a bit with the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank etc. It was harder for people to accept that product, especially people outside the U.S. Meanwhile USDT has really grown tremendously. I think USDT will remain the dominant dollar stablecoin outside of the U.S. I believe Circle will have to put up a really good fight, which they've done in the past and are very good at doing.'
It's worth noting, though, that USDC is licensed under MiCA, giving it access to 27 EU nations with a total population of about 450 million people. USDT is not.
Stablecoins grew to prominence as an essential way of moving money between volatile cryptocurrencies, meeting a particular need given the industry's shortage of fiat on and off ramps. Dollar-pegged coins of various sorts blossomed further with the explosion of decentralized finance (DeFi).
Looking further back, the early days of crypto show an evolution of payment service providers (PSPs), starting with those who wanted to use cryptocurrencies to settle their bills. This was followed by a second wave of business-to-business PSPs like Bridge, recently acquired by Stripe, and Zero Hash, Alfred Pay, Conduit and others.
'Some of these PSPs are firms you may not have heard much about, but they are actually moving billions in stablecoins, servicing businesses to pay to other businesses most of the time,' Goldi said. He pointed out that less than 20% of Fireblocks' total transaction volume was stablecoins in 2020, increasing to some 54% last year.
For a typical use case, consider an importer in Brazil that wants to bring in a container and pay someone in Turkey or in Singapore. It takes the Brazilian reals, converts them to a stablecoin, and either sends the funds directly to the exporter or changes them to the destination currency and pays with that, Goldi said.
Some banks have already caught on to the cross-border payments use case, with the likes of Braza Bank in Brazil, BTG Bank and DBS in Singapore catering to business clients with accounts that support stablecoins. Others are still weighing the best use case for them.
'We have been approached by dozens of banks,' Goldi said. 'They are asking whether they should be on/off ramps, or holding reserves, or perhaps they are thinking about issuing a stablecoin. There are several things banks can do to make money out of stablecoins, from credit to on/off ramps to FX.'
Based on those conversations, Goldi said he believes most of the banks are writing strategic plans that will probably be submitted by the end of this quarter.
'It will be interesting to see if banks build something on their own, or use BNY Mellon, for instance, that serves banks, or a vendor like Fireblocks. I think the large tier-1 banks like JPMorgan, Citi and Morgan Stanley will build their own tech, while the tier-2 banks will want to use some hosted tech provider,' Goldi said. 'Of course they are banks and they move slowly, so I think they would be looking to approve those plans by the end of this year and perhaps do something in 2026."

Second quarter earnings season is winding down, and with most of the reports in, the results have been mostly positive. Over 90% of S&P 500 index companies have reported results, and as of Friday analysts expected S&P 500 companies to report an 11.8% jump in earnings per share during the second quarter. Companies had a lower expectation bar to clear coming into the quarter — analysts expected S&P 500 earnings to rise 5% in Q2, the slowest pace of earnings growth since Q4 2023 — amid President Trump's tariffs, stocks' lofty valuations, and uncertainty about the health of the US economy. Earnings this week include Applied Materials (AMAT), Circle (CRCL), Lenovo ( AMC (AMC), Cava (CAVA), Cisco (CSCO), CoreWeave (CRWV), Deere (DE), On (ONON), and Oklo (OKLO). Here are the latest updates from corporate America. Quantum Computing stock slips as losses accelerate Quantum Computing (QUBT) CEO Yuping Huang said that the company continued to make progress in growing commercial traction in the second quarter, but the industry is still focused on reaching technology milestones. Second quarter revenue totaled approximately $61,000, compared to $183,000 in the same period a year ago. The company reported a net loss of $36.5 million, or $0.26 per share. Revenue of $1.53 billion beat Wall Street estimates of $1.52 billion, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence. Earnings per share of $4.66 also topped estimates of $4.00 per share. Total retail sales were flat, with strength in juniors' and children's apparel as well as ladies' accessories and lingerie. The weakest performing category was home and furniture. Other major retailers, including Walmart (WMT), Target (TGT), and Macy's (M), will report second quarter results in the coming weeks, providing a more in-depth look into consumer spending habits. Dillard's stock is up 23% year to date. It has climbed 78% since its April 8 low. Advance Auto Parts stock sinks 14% on gloomy financial outlook Advance Auto Parts (AAP) stock sank 14% on Thursday morning after issuing a downbeat profit forecast. The Raleigh, N.C.-based company beat Wall Street's earnings estimates but lowered its full-year earnings per share outlook to $1.20-$2.20 from its previous range of $1.50-$2.50. Advance Auto Parts attributed this change to a higher net interest expense related to its recent senior notes offering. In the earnings call, executives noted that approximately 40% of the company's cost of goods is exposed to tariffs at a blended rate of 30%. During the quarter, Advance Auto Parts saw lower transactions but higher tickets, as prices increased by 2%. The company noted that its competitors are also raising prices in a similar fashion. Financial firms from Stripe to Circle are building their own blockchains—here's why

Building blockchains is the newest fad in fintech. The U.S. crypto exchange Coinbase has one. The online brokerage Robinhood announced its plans to launch its own blockchain in June, and its competitor eToro is considering its own. And now, the fintech giant Stripe and the stablecoin issuer Circle are getting in on the action. Stripe is developing what it calls Tempo, a payments-focused blockchain, according to a since-deleted job posting and sources familiar with the matter. And Circle said Tuesday morning that it's building what it calls Arc, a blockchain designed for stablecoins, or cryptocurrencies pegged to underlying assets like the U.S. dollar. There's suddenly a flood of corporate chains, which prompts the question: Why is seemingly every big finance company—especially Stripe and Circle—becoming a blockchain developer? 'Own the full stack' The answer for Stripe is simple, according to two stablecoin executives and one investor: vertical integration. Through its $1.1 billion acquisition of the stablecoin startup Bridge, Stripe bought its own stablecoin and payments network. And after its June acquisition of the crypto wallet company Privy, it can give users accounts to store stablecoins. For, Stripe—which has made its name off of more traditional payment offerings like online checkout—adding a blockchain would amount to the creation of a full-blown stablecoin ecosystem. 'There's an incentive for these large companies to own the full stack,' Rob Hadick, general partner at the crypto venture firm Dragonfly who regularly invests in stablecoin startups, told Fortune. Stripe is making a big bet that stablecoins may be the future of payments. If much of its $1.4 trillion volume passes through stablecoins, it's missing out on potentially millions in revenue. Blockchains, or decentralized networks like Ethereum or Solana, are akin to the Google Cloud or AWS of the crypto tech stack. A decentralized fleet of servers process many of the transactions on a crypto app, and in return for lending their computing power, the owners of these servers receive fees. Coinbase's own blockchain, Base, for example, has generated more than $130 million in fees since it launched in early 2023, according to data from DefiLlama. 'You want to control the economics,' Luca Prosperi, cofounder and CEO of stablecoin infrastructure company M0, told Fortune. It remains to be seen, however, whether the multiplication of stablecoins and associated blockchains will result in countless coins and chains that normal consumers would have trouble navigating. Stripe didn't respond to a request for comment. Defense vs. offense For Circle, it's a similar set of motivations. The stablecoin issuer, which had a red-hot IPO in June, has its own token, USDC. The company also has its own burgeoning payments network. And it even has a service to let enterprise customers spin up their own crypto wallets. Still, the crypto company doesn't have its own blockchain where it can process—and receive fees—for the volume of payments that pass through its services. 'They want to own that piece of money movement as well,' Bam Azizi, cofounder and CEO of crypto payments startup Mesh, told Fortune, in reference to Circle. But Stripe and Circle aren't on the same footing. Stripe is one of the biggest private companies in tech. It's a dominant payments processor whose revenue is already diversified—including $500 million in annual revenue run rate as of January from its Stripe Billing vertical. Circle, on the other hand, derived more than 96% of its revenue in the second quarter of 2025 purely from the interest it earns on the U.S. Treasuries backing its stablecoin. If interest rates go down, its entire business model could be threatened. 'We're building a full stack, from the infrastructure layer to the stablecoin layer to the payment network layer,' Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire said in a live interview with The Information about his company's second-quarter earnings. (A spokesperson for Circle declined to comment further.) That said, some think the newly public company is playing catch-up. 'Circle is being defensive and reactive,' said Hadick, the general partner at Dragonfly. 'And Stripe is thinking about the future of payments and the future of their business, and being offensive and proactive.'
