The fairways of Umhlali Country Club came alive on Friday as Enterprise iLembe welcomed leaders from the public and private sectors for its Presidential Golf Day and business hobnobbing session.
More than just a day on the greens, the event was to serve as a platform to potentially unlock investment opportunities in the iLembe district.
On Saturday, the business and tourism agency hosted a swish VIP Durban July event at Greyville Racecourse. The weekend concluded with a celebration of local creativity at Beach Bums in Westbrook on Sunday, featuring fashion, food and live music.
The events formed part of the Durban July Ballito Experience, an initiative run in partnership with the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture, which was criticised for hosting two of the three event days in eThekwini, outside KwaDukuza municipality's jurisdiction.

Checkers rolls out South Africa's first-ever 'smart trolley': Here's how it works

Retail innovation in South Africa has taken a significant leap forward with Checkers unveiling the country's first smart shopping trolley, known as the Xpress Trolley, in a pilot launch that promises to reshape the in-store shopping experience. The Shoprite Group, through its innovation division ShopriteX, is leading the charge with this new technology aimed at delivering a frictionless, queue-free, and personalised shopping journey. The Xpress Trolley enables customers to: Scan and bag items as they shop as they shop Track a live running total of their purchases of their purchases Pay directly from the trolley , skipping checkout queues entirely , skipping checkout queues entirely Access product info and in-store navigation via an interactive touchscreen via an interactive touchscreen Receive personalised promotions based on their Xtra Savings profile 'This pilot allows us to reimagine the in-store journey using technology for a more frictionless shopping experience,' said Neil Schreuder, Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer at the Shoprite Group. Initial testing began with Home Office employees in Brackenfell, and the pilot has now expanded to: Checkers Hyper Brackenfell (10 trolleys) (10 trolleys) Checkers Constantia (10 trolleys) Shoppers need only scan their Xtra Savings card, use the bags provided, and scan each item before placing it into the trolley. At the end, customers pay via their bank card linked to their Sixty60 profile, print a till slip, and exit through a dedicated lane. The Xpress Trolley is not just a novelty. It aligns with global retail trends toward seamless omnichannel shopping and puts real-time control in the hands of customers. Key benefits include: No queues or re-bagging at tills at tills Faster, more accurate in-store picking for Sixty60 delivery staff for Sixty60 delivery staff Improved budgeting and transparency for shoppers 'The Xpress Trolley enhances convenience, improves speed, and keeps customers in control from the moment they enter the store to the moment they leave,' added Schreuder. While smart trolley tech has appeared internationally, this is the first of its kind in South Africa. Learnings from the pilot will inform future rollouts as the Shoprite Group continues its push to become the country's most profitable and seamless omnichannel retailer. If successful, South African shoppers could soon see smart trolleys becoming a standard part of their shopping experience. KZN Education Department targets ghost employees

The crisis-plagued KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education has launched a rigorous sweeping verification process aimed at exposing and eliminating ghost employees, individuals who have continued to draw full salaries despite no longer working for the department. This comes amid mounting financial strain, partly due to ghost workers and salary mismanagement, which contributed to KZN overspending its budget by R158.6 million in the 2024-2025 financial year. Ghost employees include teachers who have resigned, been dismissed, or even passed away, yet still appear on payroll systems and receive monthly payments. 'The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education will be embarking on a rigorous employee verification process to ensure that the correct number of employees are legitimately receiving remuneration through the Department's persal systems,' the department said in a statement on Tuesday, 19 August 2025. 'This process has been necessitated by instances where delays in the administrative termination of employees—due to retirement, resignation, or death—have resulted in continued salary payments long after the individuals have exited the Department.' Amid these discrepancies, the department said it engaged the Provincial Treasury, led by MEC Francois Rodgers, to assist with the necessary IT infrastructure to facilitate 'this large-scale verification exercise and to ensure the quality and integrity of the process'. Education MEC Sipho Hlomuka said: 'We are confident that the verification process will enhance transparency, accountability, and good governance.' He also called for the full cooperation of all department employees to ensure the success of the initiative. Details on the verification process are sketchy. However, the department said they will be communicated in due course. Hlomuka has come under heavy scrutiny after allegations that he allegedly interfered in the R2.9 billion National School Nutrition programme bidding process. Hlomuka was accused of favouring a company he helped start in 2017 to benefit from the nutrition tender process. He summarily refuted all the allegations against him. These damning allegations prompted the KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Thamsanqa Ntuli, to demand written explanations from him and his counterpart, MEC for Health Nomagugu Simelane.
