Suspect arrested after pursuit, police shooting in East County
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A man was arrested Monday after a pursuit and shooting involving an officer in the La Mesa area.
Jahlil Johnson, 29, of La Mesa, was booked into county jail for multiple felony charges including domestic violence and child endangerment, Lt. Daniel Meyer with the San Diego Police Department said in a news release.
Around 10:40 a.m., La Mesa Police Department officers responded to a report of a man strangling a female in the area of 7700 Normal Avenue.
When authorities arrived, the suspect drove away with the 29-year-old woman inside his vehicle, according to SDPD.
As officers attempted to pull the car over, the driver pulled over briefly to let the woman passenger exit, but then took off again.
The pursuit was terminated, however, officers learned two young children, ages 5 and 7, were still inside the vehicle.
The suspect then returned to the woman's location where he dropped her off and let the kids exit the vehicle.
Police reinitiated the pursuit, deploying a tire deflation device that didn't slow down the driver.

The driver eventually stopped in the area of 4400 Parks Avenue where he backed into the front of a police vehicle stopped behind him.
The passenger officer was preparing to exit the police vehicle to conduct a high-risk vehicle stop when the police vehicle was struck, causing the officer to hit his head and injuring him, per SDPD.
'In response, the officer fired his handgun multiple times in the direction of the suspect vehicle. The vehicle was struck several times, but the suspect himself was not hit,' Meyer said.
Another pursuit ensued into the city of San Diego and then back into La Mesa where tire deflation devices were deployed at least twice more, but the driver did not stop.
Then in the area of 7800 University Avenue, a relative of the suspect stepped into traffic in front of the suspect's vehicle, forcing the pursuit to end.
The suspect tried to run from authorities for about two blocks, but officers with La Mesa, San Diego and El Cajon were able to catch up with him. A taser and police K-9 were used to bring the suspect into custody.
Johnson, who was not struck by gunfire, was taken to a local hospital for his injuries from the arrest.
The injured La Mesa police officer, who has been with the department for eight years, was taken to a hospital for treatment and has since been released.
San Diego Police Homicide Detectives are investigating the incident per the countywide memorandum of understanding regarding officer-involved shooting.

Man charged in Palm Springs fertility clinic bombing after being arrested by FBI at New York's JFK airport
A man was charged Wednesday in connection with last month's bombing outside a fertility clinic in Palm Springs, California, after being apprehended in Europe and flown to New York City, where he was he was arrested overnight, authorities said. Daniel Park, 32, of Washington state is charged with providing and attempting to provide material support to a terrorist, U.S. Attorney Bilal Essayli announced during a news conference. Park is accused of shipping approximately 180 pounds of ammonium nitrate — commonly used as a precursor to construct homemade explosives — to the bomber, who was identified by officials as 25-year-old Guy Bartkus. Bartkus died in the blast outside the American Reproductive Centers fertility clinic on May 17. Four other people were injured in the explosion. Essayli said evidence shows Park and Bartkus shared extremist beliefs. According to the criminal complaint filed Wednesday, "Bartkus's attack was motivated by his pro-mortalism, anti-natalism, and anti-pro-life ideology, which is the belief that individuals should not be born without their consent and that non-existence is best." Investigators said Park also paid for an additional 90 pounds of ammonium nitrate that was shipped to Bartkus in the days leading up to the bombing. Park spent approximately two weeks visiting Bartkus' residence in Twentynine Palms, California, in late January and early February and ran "experiments" in his garage, Essayli said. FBI Assistant Director Akil Davis, in charge of the bureau's Los Angeles field office, said Park was charged because of his contributions to the bomb. "Park was in possession of an explosive recipe that was similar to the Oklahoma City bombing," Davis told reporters, referring to the 1995 attack on the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City that killed 168 people. "We believe that Park had knowledge of how to create an ANFO bomb, ammonium-nitrate-fuel-oil bomb." The facility also lost power, but it was restored in time so no embryos were lost in the attack. The clinic reopened about two weeks later at a new location. The FBI believed that the bombing was premeditated and called the attack an "intentional act of terrorism." Detectives said they believed Bartkus acted alone at the site of the attack, but said they were scouring his online chats to learn whether anyone helped him buy parts or refine the design of the bomb. Investigators said the blast pattern shows that the device was far more damaging than a low-grade explosive such as fireworks. The FBI said Bartkus had access to a large quantity of commercially available chemical products that could be combined to create a homemade explosive device. Reddit Sues Anthropic, Accusing It of Illegally Using Data From Its Site
Reddit on Wednesday sued Anthropic, accusing the artificial intelligence start-up of unlawfully using the data of Reddit's more than 100 million daily users to train its A.I. systems. The lawsuit, which was filed in the Superior Court of California in San Francisco, claimed that Anthropic had accessed or tried to access Reddit data more than 100,000 times, in a breach of the online platform's content policies. Anthropic had also declined to enter into a licensing agreement for the data, the lawsuit said, and had unjustly enriched itself at Reddit's expense. 'We will not tolerate profit-seeking entities like Anthropic commercially exploiting Reddit content for billions of dollars without any return for redditors or respect for their privacy,' Ben Lee, Reddit's chief legal officer, said in a statement. 'A.I. companies should not be allowed to scrape information and content from people without clear limitations on how they can use that data.' A spokeswoman for Anthropic did not immediately provide a comment. The lawsuit was the latest clash over the use of digital data by A.I. companies amid a heated race to develop the technology. For years, A.I. companies have gobbled up as much data across the internet as possible to fine tune their systems, which rely on information to improve the responses they generate. But those data sources are quickly drying up, as companies have begun to lock down more of their data to keep it from being used without permission. Reddit, which is 20 years old and went public last year, is among a generation of social media companies with a wealth of user-generated conversational data. The site is a kind of social message board, where people can hold discussions on any number of topics, from dogs to television shows to cryptocurrency. In recent years, Reddit executives began realizing just how valuable the company's data was to the rest of the industry. Steve Huffman, Reddit's chief executive, began talking to companies like Google and OpenAI to potentially strike licensing deals.
