Pratibha Shinde of Lok Sangharsh leaves Congress, after year-long stint as state vice-president, for NCP

Nashik: Pratibha Shinde, the state vice president of Congress and a prominent leader of Lok Sangharsh morcha defending tribal rights, has resigned from the party and has decided to move to NCP less than a year after her appointment. Shinde, who joined Congress in Dec 2023, has been a key advocate for the tribal communities in Nashik, Nandurbar, Dhule, and Jalgaon districts since the 1990s. Influenced by Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra, she chose to join the same party she had previously agitated against for tribal rights. "Rahul Gandhi is very committed to his ideals. Whatever you call it, we were agitating against the same Congress when it was in power for the rights of the tribals, and it is not that our fight was futile. We got our just demands sanctioned during our agitations. However, after we met Rahul Gandhi during a rally in Jalgaon-Jamod (Buldhana district) in Nov 2022, I was invited by him to join the party to ensure more teeth to the agitations. I accepted that a year later," Shinde said. In July 2024, Shinde was promoted as vice president of state Congress and she endeavoured to raise tribal demands with govt. However, after allegedly failing to receive support from the grassroots, she chose to sever ties with Congress. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Take a spoonful on an empty stomach and watch the fat go down the drain gofitlifeguide Click Here Undo "Whenever I met the seniors in the party, even the current ones, I was told that since I was directly inducted, I could draw my own programmes, clearly indicating that my position was not taken professionally in the party," alleged Shinde. Shinde also attempted to engage with senior members of NCP (SP) but received no response, leading her to join NCP and become part of Mahayuti. When questioned about her decision to transfer to NCP rather than any other Mahayuti party, Shinde said, "I cannot think of Shiv Sena in either form — be it led by Eknath Shinde or Uddhav Thackeray. BJP is also out of the question given the stand of all these three parties on Hindutva. Since NCP has been walking the path of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Shahu Maharaj, Mahatma Phule, and Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar's teachings, I decided to join the party." Addressing her transition from an organisation fighting for tribal rights to active politics, Shinde said, "I have realised that fighting alone is not the solution. We have been fighting since 1992, and though we have achieved great milestones, it is important to bring in the change by being part of the system." INDIA bloc functionaries in Kolhapur protest against alleged voter list manipulation during Lok Sabha and assembly polls

Kolhapur: Several functionaries and workers of INDIA bloc political parties staged an agitation at Shahu Samadhi Sthal in Kolhapur on Tuesday. They condemned the alleged vote theft through manipulation of the voter list in Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections and the arrest of an opposition MP while marching to the Election Commission of India's office. Office-bearers of Congress, NCP (SP), Shiv Sena (UBT), and Left parties participated in the protest, chanting slogans against central and state govts. Citing a recent press conference by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, regarding voter list manipulation and subsequent BJP-led attacks on Gandhi and opposition members, most politicians participating in Tuesday's protest said that while the Election Commission (EC) is being attacked, BJP workers are stepping in to defend it. Shiv Sena (UBT) city chief Ravikiran Ingawale said, "Every citizen of this country must know about the scam that took place during the election. Now, the manipulation has been proven. Both in centre and state, BJP has formed govt because of this manipulation. The truth has prevailed. One day, people will punish BJP and its politicians." Allegations of 'vote theft' In India, the word 'election' is one that evokes immense civic pride in a citizen. Therefore, it is the duty of the Election Commission of India (ECI) to ensure that the entire election system ensures a fair poll as the running of a democracy rests on this. But why is the ECI not responding to the Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's allegations of 'vote theft' if it has nothing to hide? And why is Mr. Gandhi not submitting his claims in writing? The ECI seems more intent on condemning the messenger than confronting wrong-doing. Baani Bhabha, Ambala, Punjab Human-elephant conflict The report, 'World Elephant to be celebrated in Coimbatore today' (August 12), is perhaps the right moment to highlight how tourists harass elephants. Video footage of a tusker nearly trampling a tourist in Bandipur on August 10 is an example of unchecked tourism and tourists not following the rules. The 'selfie craze' is to blame. There are videos on YouTube of local people harassing elephants in the tea gardens of West Bengal and Assam. These clips show youngsters running behind herds and teasing the animals and the 'mass entertainment' it gives them when the angry animals react. What are the State Forest Departments doing? The fact is that there are a number of public health specialists in India with a Masters in Public Health (MPH). Such community physicians and public health specialists should actively seek out major roles so that national health programmes have meaningful community engagement.
