They Followed a Truck for 300 Miles. Then They Stole $100 Million in Jewelry.

The Brink's semi truck containing dozens of bags of glittering jewels and luxury watches from an international jewelry show near San Francisco pulled into a rest stop nestled among the mountains north of Los Angeles. So, too, did the thieves who were following it on a 300-mile journey.
Although specific details on how exactly they pulled off what federal prosecutors are calling 'the largest jewelry heist in U.S. history' were not available, an indictment in the case said that some had acted as lookouts while others made off with 24 bags, containing an estimated $100 million worth of goods.
Now, nearly three years later, seven men have been charged in connection with the theft, and some of the jewelry that was stolen has been recovered, the Justice Department said in a news release on Tuesday.
'This isn't a group that just woke up and met in the park and said, 'Hey, let's go follow a jewelry tractor-trailer from a jewelry show,'' said Scott Guginsky, the executive vice president of the Jewelers' Security Alliance, a trade association that tracks jewelry crimes for retailers and the police, adding that a lot of thought goes into planning such a crime.
The men who have been indicted — Carlos Victor Mestanza Cercado, Jorge Enrique Alban, Jazael Padilla Resto, Eduardo Macias Ibarra, Pablo Raul Lugo Larroig, Jeson Nelon Presilla Flores and Victor Hugo Valencia Solorzano — each face two counts of conspiracy to commit theft from interstate and foreign shipment, as well as theft from interstate and foreign shipment, according to the Justice Department, which did not say how the men were caught.
Five of the men — Mr. Mestanza, Mr. Padilla, Mr. Lugo, Mr. Valencia, and Mr. Alban — were also charged with two counts of conspiracy to interfere with commerce by robbery, as well as interference with commerce by robbery, prosecutors said.

She is the final defendant to agree to a guilty plea. The others who already pled guilty include Dr. Salvador Plasencia, Dr. Mark Chavez, the actor's personal assistant Kenneth Iwamasa and 'street dealer' Erik Fleming. Following Plasencia's guilty plea in June, the physician released a statement saying he was 'profoundly remorseful' for the role he played in Perry's death. 'While Dr. Plasencia was not treating Mr. Perry at the time of his death, he hopes his case serves as a warning to other medical professionals and leads to stricter oversight and clear protocols for the rapidly growing at-home ketamine industry in order to prevent future tragedies like this one,' Plasencia's lawyer, Karen L. Goldstein, said in a statement to the Los Angeles Times. Perry was found dead in his hot tub on Oct. 28, 2023. His cause of death was ruled a ketamine overdose with drowning as a factor. He was 54. Woman says she was attacked before her baby was kidnapped in San Bernardino County

A couple is pleading for the public's help after they say their 7-month-old baby was kidnapped in Yucaipa. On Aug. 14, around 7 p.m., Rebecca Haro said she, her husband and their two other children were at a local park for their son's football practice. She drove over to a Big 5 Sporting Goods store on the 34000 block of Yucaipa Boulevard to buy a mouthguard for her older son. She brought her baby, Emmanuel Haro, along with her. 'I came over here and parked right on the edge,' she told KTLA's Ellina Abovian. 'When I was driving over, I smelled the baby had went to the restroom, so I said, 'Don't worry, we are going to change you.'' After parking, Rebecca laid the baby down next to the car seat to change his diaper. The last thing she remembers is hearing a stranger's voice before she was attacked. 'I was going to get the diaper and somebody said, 'Hola,' and I don't remember anything since,' she recalled in tears. 'I woke up here on the floor and I didn't see Emmanuel.' Rebecca woke up with a black eye and with her baby nowhere in sight. She frantically searched around the car and ran into the Big 5 store before she called 911. San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies responded to the scene and dispatched K9 scent-tracking dogs to track the child down. 'Everybody came,' Rebecca said. 'The dogs, the helicopters.' But so far, authorities have not located Emmanuel. The boy's father, Jake Haro, said his family doesn't have enemies and they can't imagine why anyone would want to take their baby. 'Whoever took my son, please return him,' he said. 'We just want him back. We won't do anything to you. Just give us our son. Keep him safe, don't hurt him, make sure you feed him and change him.' 'If you know anything, please come forward or take him to the cops,' Rebecca said. 'Please come and bring my son back. I'm begging you.' The baby boy is approximately 24 inches tall and weighs about 21 pounds. He has brown hair, brown eyes and is cross-eyed, authorities said. He was last seen wearing a black Nike onesie. Authorities said an AMBER Alert was not activated because the case did not meet the criteria as there is no suspect or vehicle description. Friends and family members have begun a search party effort on Friday night. Anyone who knows Emmanuel's whereabouts or has information on the case is urged to call 911 or SBSD Sheriff's Dispatch at 909-387-8313. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
