Man, 61, Dies After MRI Machine Pulls Him Inside. He Was Wearing 9 kg Chain
Keith entered the MRI room without permission when his wife was undergoing a knee scan, said the Nassau County Police Department, BBC reported. "The male victim was wearing a large metallic chain around his neck, causing him to be drawn into the machine, which resulted in a medical episode," the department said in a statement.
The victim's wife, Adrienne Jones-McAllister, said she was undergoing an MRI scan on her knee and asked her husband to come in and help her get up after the procedure. Her husband was wearing a 9 kg metal chain with a lock, which he used for weight training.
Charles Winterfeldt, the hospital's director of imaging services, told CBS News, "It would act like a torpedo trying to get into the middle of the centre of the magnet."
"At that instant, the machine switched him around, pulled him in, and he hit the MRI," she told CNN, adding, "He went limp in my arms." She said the technician tried to pull him away, but his efforts went in vain. She said, "I'm saying, 'Could you turn off the machine? Call 911. Do something. Turn this damn thing off!'"
Jones-McAllister said the chain her husband was wearing wasn't new to the staff. The couple had discussed it with the MRI technician during earlier visits. "That was not the first time that guy has seen that chain on her husband. They had a conversation about it before."
Dr Payal Sud told CBS News, "The dangers could be catastrophic, and it underscores why we have all the safety precautions in place."
The magnetic fields in the MRI machines attract objects such as keys, mobile phones and even oxygen tanks. This may cause damage to the scanner or even injure the "patient or medical professionals", according to the US Food and Drug Administration.

Neuro scans of adults in UK reveal faster ageing of brain post-pandemic
Last Updated: New Delhi, Jul 23 (PTI) Experiencing the COVID-19 pandemic may have accelerated brain ageing by five and a half months, regardless of one's infection status, according to a new study, which researchers said point to the indirect effects of aspects such as isolation and uncertainty. The researchers, led by those from the University of Nottingham, analysed brain scans of adults in the UK taken before and after the pandemic. They found that changes were most noticeable among the brains of older individuals, men, and people from disadvantaged backgrounds, such as those unemployed and having lower incomes or education. However, brain ageing was found to impact cognitive function, with 'brain fog' and difficulty in focussing being common symptoms, only in those who were infected with COVID-19, suggesting that brain ageing alone may not necessarily produce symptoms. The findings, published in the journal Nature Communications, highlight 'how much the experience of the pandemic itself, everything from isolation to uncertainty, may have affected our brain health," said lead researcher Ali-Reza Mohammadi-Nejad, research fellow at the university's faculty of medicine and health sciences. 'What surprised me most was that even people who hadn't had Covid showed significant increases in brain ageing rates," Mohammadi-Nejad added. AI-powered models which were used for predicting brain age were first trained on magnetic resonance image (MRI) brain scans of over 15,000 healthy people from the UK Biobank. The models thus learnt to measure the 'brain age gap' i.e. how much one's brain age differed from their actual age. The models were then employed to analyse two scans of the brains of 996 healthy participants, in 564 people (controls) both the scans were taken before the pandemic, while in the 'Pandemic' group consisting of 432 individuals, one scan was taken before and one after. 'The 'Pandemic' group shows on average (a) 5.5-month higher deviation of brain age gap at the second time point, compared with controls," the authors wrote. They also found that 'accelerated brain ageing is more pronounced in males and those from deprived socio-demographic backgrounds and these deviations exist regardless of SARS-CoV-2 (virus that causes COVID-19) infection." Further, cognitive tests taken at the time of both scans revealed that an 'accelerated brain ageing correlates with reduced cognitive performance only in COVID-infected participants." Senior author Dorothee Auer, professor of neuroimaging at the University of Nottingham, said 'This study reminds us that brain health is shaped not only by illness, but by our everyday environment." 'The pandemic put a strain on people's lives, especially those already facing disadvantage. We can't yet test whether the changes we saw will reverse, but it's certainly possible, and that's an encouraging thought," Auer said. Baby Girl Grows Micropenis: Is it true? Here's what happened when Swedish child came in contact with…
How did Baby Girl Develop Micropenis? Testosterone Gel Caused Unintentional Exposure Physical Changes Appeared in Baby Girl Live Events Doctor Reports Similar Cases How Did Symptoms Reverse? TRT Use Growing Rapidly Hormone Therapy Gains Popularity Online Experts Urge Proper Gel Use to Prevent Transfer FAQs (You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel A reported case from Sweden has brought attention to the potential risks of topical testosterone gel exposure in children. A baby girl developed male genitalia-like features after skin-to-skin contact with her father, who was undergoing testosterone replacement therapy. Experts now warn parents about accidental hormone transfer during routine bonding contact, also called kangaroo care, is a widely practiced method used by new parents to bond with their babies. It helps regulate the baby's body temperature, heart rate, and breathing. In this case, a father undergoing testosterone replacement therapy held his newborn daughter on his bare chest multiple father had applied testosterone gel to his chest as part of his treatment for hypogonadism. This condition is marked by low testosterone production, which can lead to fatigue, low libido, and other symptoms. The gel, when in contact with skin, can transfer testosterone to others. The baby unknowingly absorbed the exposure continued, the baby girl's clitoris started to enlarge. Her labia began to fuse, making her genitals resemble those of a male. Concerned, the parents brought her to a doctor. Blood tests revealed elevated testosterone levels, confirming the hormone transfer as the Jovanna Dahlgren, a pediatric endocrinologist at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, said she has seen at least six similar cases, as per media reports. One involved a 10-year-old boy who developed breasts after being exposed to estrogen cream from his mother. Dahlgren explained that many people do not realize how powerful hormone medications can the father stopped using the testosterone gel and ceased direct contact, the baby's hormone exposure ended. Over time, her genitals began to return to normal. While the incident caused panic among the parents, no permanent damage was reported in this case highlights a broader trend in testosterone replacement therapy use. In the United States, TRT prescriptions rose from 7.3 million in 2019 to over 11 million in 2023, according to CBS News. Many men now use TRT for energy, muscle gain, or sexual like Sylvester Stallone, Josh Duhamel, Joe Rogan, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. have spoken about using TRT. On TikTok, the hashtag 'TRT Before and After' shows users in their 20s and 30s promoting its benefits. However, experts stress the importance of caution and medical comes in various forms, including pills, patches, injections, and gels. The Mayo Clinic advises users of testosterone gel to wash hands thoroughly after applying and to rinse the application area before skin contact with others. This helps avoid accidental hormone exposure, especially around infants and developed male genitalia-like features after repeated skin contact with her father, who had used testosterone gel on his gel can transfer through skin-to-skin contact, potentially altering a child's hormonal development and causing physical changes.

HC seeks affidavits from Punjab, Haryana & Chandigarh on medical infra
1 2 Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana high court has directed the governments of Punjab, Haryana, and the Union Territory of Chandigarh to file affidavits detailing their respective medical policies, specifically regarding the minimum infrastructural requirements at district hospitals. The court has asked for clarity on the availability of CT scanners and MRI machines in these hospitals. The affidavits must also specify whether the CT and MRI facilities in government hospitals are state-owned or outsourced. This directive was issued by a division bench comprising Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Sanjiv Berry, as part of an ongoing public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Bhisham Kinger. The PIL, filed last year, highlighted the dire condition of the civil hospital in Malerkotla, Punjab. Despite being a 130-bed facility, the hospital had only four doctors, with most specialist and paramedical posts lying vacant. Taking cognisance of the issue, the HC had sought reports from the state authorities and passed several interim orders. During the hearing on July 17, the Punjab government informed the court that 20 medical officers had been posted at the Malerkotla hospital to fill existing vacancies - 11 of them were fresh recruits, while the remaining nine were transferred from other locations. If not, the affidavit must explain what steps were taken to fill the vacancies created by their transfer. The bench also questioned why the state of Punjab cannot purchase CT scanners and MRI machines for every district hospital, reiterating that providing free medical aid is a sovereign function of the state. Recognising the broader public importance of the issue, the court expanded the scope of the PIL to include all districts of Haryana and Chandigarh. The bench directed both Haryana and Chandigarh to file replies to the petition and respond to the various interlocutory orders passed by the court so far. The matter has been adjourned for further hearing on Aug 19.
