John Elway golf cart accident: Coroner rules on death of agent
The Riverside County Coroner has determined that the death of a man who fell from a golf cart driven by former star NFL quarterback John Elway was accidental, the county sheriff's department said Friday.
The coroner also said that it has determined that Jeffrey Sperbeck's death was the result of "blunt head trauma." The mode of death, which describes how the injury occurred, was "passenger fell from a golf cart."
The department announced the results of the coroner's investigation into Sperbeck's death in a post on the social media site X on Friday, May 9. A department spokesperson told The Desert Sun Friday that the investigation into Sperbeck's death remains ongoing.
The agency tweeted about the status of the investigation on May 2, saying "at this point there is nothing to indicate that this is anything more than a tragic incident."
That same day, Sheriff Chad Bianco told The Denver Post newspaper that no evidence had been found so far indicating that Elway had been driving the golf cart while drunk.
Sperbeck's fall occurred at around 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, at The Madison Club in La Quinta. TMZ reported that Sperbeck, who has been described as Elway's close friend, business partner and former agent, the quarterback and their spouses were at the Madison Club for a party being held to coincide with the Stagecoach Music Festival.
TMZ reported that Sperbeck suddenly fell off a cart, hit his head and was brought to a hospital. The 62-year-old man died from his injuries on April 30 at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, according to a coroner's report.
Although Sperbeck's fall was on a Saturday, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department was not notified until the following Monday, April 28.
While the sheriff's department has opened an investigation into the crash, Bianco told The Denver Post on May 2 that there was 'nothing that we have found' to indicate law enforcement should've been involved sooner.
Bianco said that the investigation into Sperbeck's death would likely be "relatively short" and involve review of surveillance footage and witness testimony. He said that so far there had been no discrepancies in witnesses' statements.

Brittany Fortinberry, teacher accused of orgy with students, forced to sell house
The Indiana home where disgraced teacher Brittany Fortinberry is accused of making teenagers as young as 13 wear 'Scream' masks while having group sex with her has been put up for sale after her husband dumped her, according to a report. Fortinberry's husband, Nicholas, filed for divorce from the 31-year-old educator, and the couple can no longer afford their Martinsdale home, according to divorce documents seen by TMZ. The house is where police say some of Fortinberry's alleged sick sexual encounters with minors took place last year — and where a stripper pole and sex toys were found inside, according to court documents seen by Fox59. Brittany Fortinberry, a former Indiana math teacher, allegedly had sex with at least six students, authorities said. @nicholasmatthewfortinberry/Instagram Nicholas filed for divorce from his wife in February, around the time cops began investigating this wife. The couple had been using the monthly benefits from the US Department of Veteran Affairs to pay bills, but the money is no longer being deposited into their joint bank account, according to the divorce documents, which said it was being funneled 'elsewhere.' Without it, the now-fired teacher's estranged husband can no longer make monthly house payments, the docs state. Fortinberry, 31, could spend the rest of her life in prison. A judge recently granted Nicholas' motion to list their home. The expected price was not detailed. Fortinberry faces a staggering 41 felonies related to a twisted string of alleged sex crimes involving at least six students as young as 13. If convicted, she could die behind bars. Fortinberry allegedly plied the kids she met at two different schools with alcohol and magic mushrooms before having sex with them, including at least one alleged incident where she had the boys wear masks from the 'Scream' movie franchise, according to police. On at least one occasion, her children were in the house in bed while the alleged orgies took place, police have alleged. Fortinberry has pleaded not guilty to the charges against her and is currently being held in the Morgan County Jail. Her next court appearance will be a pretrial conference scheduled for August. One of her alleged victims was a teenager she had hired to babysit her kids, according to prosecutors. Fortinberry allegedly offered between $100 and $800 to the boys for photos of their genitals, and would regularly send nude photos of herself, her original charging documents claimed. She would often threaten to kill herself if her victims said anything about the abuse, according to the charging documents. Among the charges Fortinberry faces are incest, multiple counts of child molesting, conducting a performance that is harmful to minors, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Feds search Kentucky estate owned by SoHo crypto torture suspects
A Kentucky estate owned by two men accused of torturing an Italian man in SoHo over a Bitcoin password was raided by a team of investigators Tuesday. New York City cops joined federal officials and Kentucky State Police to go through a property belonging to cryptocurrency investor John Woeltz and his associate William Duplessie, according to TMZ. Investigators reportedly have two warrants for an 'active and ongoing investigation' involving the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Woeltz, 37, and Duplessie, 33, are accused of luring 28-year-old Michael Valentino Teofrasto Carturan from Italy to Manhattan, then violently keeping him under their control for 17 days before he seemingly escaped their downtown townhouse bloodied and wearing no shoes. Some photos obtained by TMZ call into question how much resistance Caturan offered at certain points in the ordeal. TMZ said one image showed him unrestrained and seemingly using crack cocaine in what appeared to be a party atmosphere. But prosecutors claim Carturan's wrists were bound and he was subjected to 'beatings including but not limited to the use of electric wires to shock him' as well as being assaulted with a firearm that was sometimes pointed at his head. The alleged assailants are also accused of using a saw to cut his leg and urinating on him. Carturan said he was relieved of his passport and electronic devices upon arrival on the Prince Street property. He escaped when one of his captors left him alone to get a laptop so he could enter the passport the suspects wanted. Woeltz is known as the 'Crypto King of Kentucky,' according to TMZ.
