He was 24 with just $20: Mark Cuban's first business venture failed in 30 days, but the lesson he learned is priceless

Economic Times6 days ago
Agencies Mark Cuban's initial entrepreneurial attempt involved selling powdered milk, which failed within a month, teaching him valuable lessons about business.
Long before Mark Cuban became a billionaire entrepreneur, NBA team owner, and household name on Shark Tank, he was just a broke 24-year-old college grad with a hustle — and a handful of powdered milk packets. In a recent episode of the 'Aspire' podcast hosted by Emma Grede, Cuban revealed how his very first business venture — selling powdered milk — failed spectacularly in just 30 days. Armed with under $20 and unshakable optimism, Cuban believed his budget milk substitute could revolutionize frugal kitchens. 'I remember taking samples to people, mixing it up, like, 'Look, milk's expensive. We're broke, right? This will save you money,'' he said on the show. The response? Indifference at best, revulsion at worst. That sting of rejection might have ended the story for most — but for Cuban, it was just the first step. The powdered milk venture was Cuban's crash course in entrepreneurship. 'It did not sell,' he admitted plainly. But that 30-day loss proved to be a long-term gain. 'It doesn't matter how many times you fail. You only have to be right one time,' he reflected.
And he was. Shortly after, Cuban launched MicroSolutions, a software reseller company. With no outside funding and no time off ('I didn't take a vacation for the next seven years,' he told The Playbook by Entrepreneur), Cuban hustled his way into profitability. By 1990, he sold MicroSolutions to CompuServe for $6 million. Nine years later, he made internet history by selling Broadcast.com to Yahoo for $6 billion.
Cuban's early struggles were far from glamorous. He was fired from a computer store, lived with six roommates in a cramped apartment, and often slept on the floor. But instead of retreating, he went all in — and stayed all in. 'There is no balance,' Cuban once told Sports Illustrated. 'If you want to crush the game, whatever game you're in, there's somebody working 24 hours a day to kick your a*s.'. What if you're starting with nothing today? Cuban says the answer lies not in bank accounts, but in sweat equity. If he had to build from scratch in 2025, he'd lean into artificial intelligence — and not by spending, but by learning.
'I'd be all about AI,' he said. 'If I had access to a library and $0, I'd be in there till they kicked me out.' He suggests learning to prompt AI tools effectively, then offering services to small businesses to improve efficiency. In other words: find a skill, sharpen it for free, and sell it.
Despite his massive fortune (estimated at $6 billion, per Forbes), Cuban's proudest achievement might just be the control he now exercises over his own time. At SXSW 2024, he shared a telling anecdote — after making his first million, he threw away his watch. 'I didn't want to respond to anyone else,' he said. 'I wanted to own my time.'

Rob Pelinka Reflects on Luka Doncic Trade and Contract Extension: A Franchise-Defining Gamble That Paid Off

Rob Pelinka and Luka Doncic (image via Getty) Six months after one of the most stunning deals in recent NBA history, Los Angeles Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka is finally speaking candidly about the blockbuster trade that brought Luka Doncic to LA. With the 26-year-old superstar now locked into a three-year, $165 million contract extension, Pelinka is calling the move a turning point for the organization - and perhaps the league. How the Los Angeles Lakers Pulled Off the Shocking Luka Doncic-Anthony Davis Trade When the Los Angeles Lakers sent Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Luka Doncic , it rocked the basketball world. The idea that the Mavericks would move on from a 25-year-old generational talent - already a five-time All-Star and All-NBA First Teamer - seemed almost surreal. Yet behind the scenes, Mavericks GM Nico Harrison had growing concerns about Doncic's conditioning, leadership style, and cultural fit. Seeking a culture reset built on grit and balance, Harrison made the call. Rob Pelinka admitted that when he first heard about the possibility, he couldn't believe it: 'I thought trading for Luka was a joke when I first heard about it.' Still, the Lakers acted quickly and decisively. Pelinka recognized the rare opportunity and made a bold move that changed the league landscape overnight. Doncic's Arrival Signals a New Era in Lakers History With Doncic now signed through 2028, the Lakers have entered a new chapter. Rob Pelinka sees this as more than just a roster upgrade - it's a generational shift: 'Today is a monumental moment for our franchise. Luka Doncic's future is with the Los Angeles Lakers. Luka is one of the game's most transcendent players… Luka is an absolute killer on the court and blends that with a unique generosity and care for the community.' Doncic's connection with the fanbase was almost instant. Pelinka believes the chemistry between player and city is already fueling momentum toward championship contention. Doncic Admits Trade Was 'Tough,' But He's All-In on Lakers Future Initially blindsided by the trade, Doncic later expressed gratitude and excitement for the opportunity to wear purple and gold: 'Honestly, the first day was tough. I felt like the last 48 hours stretched out like a month… But each day after has been better. I'm genuinely thrilled to be here.' At his extension press conference, Doncic made his intentions clear: 'We're going to go for it.' That rallying cry has energized Laker Nation and made it clear that the championship window is wide open. The Los Angeles Lakers Rebuild Around Doncic and Look Beyond LeBron James With LeBron James opting into his $52.6 million player option but remaining noncommittal about his long-term plans, the Lakers have quickly reshaped the roster around their new franchise star. The addition of Deandre Ayton gives Doncic a versatile frontcourt partner, while other complementary pieces are designed to amplify his playmaking and scoring. Pelinka acknowledges the balancing act - honoring LeBron's twilight years while also building a future led by Doncic. The blueprint is clear: win now and build sustained success for the post-LeBron era. Rob Pelinka's Vision: Luka as the Centerpiece of the Next Championship Run Rob Pelinka has made it clear that this move wasn't just about this season - it's about anchoring the Lakers' identity for years to come. 'Above all else, Luka will lead our franchise to pursue future championships, a goal that will forever define the Lakers.' Reflecting on the trade, Pelinka drew a metaphor to basketball IQ under pressure: 'Maybe Luka faces a blitz; he won't be startled - he'll stay focused, assess the situation, and make the play. When the opportunity arose, my mindset was to process it mentally and finalize the deal.' Los Angeles Lakers Return to Center Stage with Doncic Leading the Way Now one of the NBA's most watched teams, the Los Angeles Lakers are riding a wave of renewed excitement. Doncic, already a global icon, is now also the highest-paid Laker through 2028. With his flair, competitiveness, and leadership, he's reignited the spirit of Showtime - modernized for a new generation. Luka Doncic's Lakers extension dubbed ‘genius'; All-Star could make $500 million eventually

Luka Doncic has signed a blockbuster contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers. The 26-year-old has agreed to a three-year, $165 million maximum contract extension, eliminating a chance at free agency next summer. The deal will keep the Slovenian in LA through 2028, and give him a shot at earning close to $500 million when he completes 10 years in the NBA. 'Excited to keep working to bring championships to LA and make Laker Nation proud,' Doncic wrote X, platform formerly known as Twitter. 'Grateful to the Lakers, my teammates, and all the fans who've shown so much love since day one. This is just the beginning.' Doncic will be eligible for a max deal worth over $400 million when his player option arrives. The Lakers could also offer him a bonus, taking the amount to close to $500 million. However, the five-time All-NBA star is not keeping all the cash for himself. He made a pledge on Saturday. 'Today I'm also committing $5 million to help 77 young athletes around the world chase their dreams, just like I did. Basketball gave me everything, and I'm lucky to be able to give back and help the next generation,' he tweeted.

Kelsey Plum fuels debate after revealing true reason behind WNBA salary demands

Kelsey Plum fuels debate after revealing true reason behind WNBA salary demands (Image Source: Getty Images) Many people believe WNBA players want the same salaries as NBA stars, but that's not true. The real issue is how league money is shared. Las Vegas Aces guard Kelsey Plum recently explained that women players are simply asking for a fair percentage of revenue- just like the men receive in their league. As talks over a new WNBA agreement heat up, players are making their voices heard with clear demands and honest facts. WNBA players want a fair share, not equal pay with NBA players, says Kelsey Plum During an appearance on the All The Smoke podcast with Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson in July 2025, Las Vegas Aces star Kelsey Plum spoke openly about what WNBA players are really asking for in the new collective bargaining agreement (CBA). Plum, who is the WNBPA's first vice president, said many people have misunderstood their demands. She clarified that players are not asking to be paid the same amount as NBA players. Instead, they want a similar percentage of league revenue that male athletes receive in their league. Plum said this misunderstanding has made people criticize the women unfairly. 'We're asking just the same percentage of revenue or a similar percentage of revenue,' she said on the podcast, which aired in late July. 'And right now, that's not the case. That's what we're fighting for.' Kelsey Plum explains what's missing in WNBA deals and how revenue sharing compares Right now, WNBA players receive just 9.3% of the league's revenue, which is the lowest revenue share among major U.S. professional leagues. In comparison, NBA players are guaranteed around 50%, and the NFL and NHL players also receive close to half of league revenue. Kelsey Plum made these statements on the record during her podcast interview on All The Smoke, which took place ahead of the 2025 WNBA All-Star break. Many WNBA players, including Plum, wore 'Pay us what you owe us' shirts during warm-ups for the All-Star Game, held in Phoenix, Arizona, on July 20. This was a clear message to league executives during ongoing negotiations. Despite the gap, WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert said in an interview with ESPN that she believes both sides will reach a fair deal. 'There's a lot of work being done, and we're committed to growth,' Engelbert said in late July. The WNBA has seen major growth since the last CBA was signed in 2020. According to Basketball Network, viewership has gone up by 170%, attendance increased by 48%, and merchandise sales rose by 601% in the 2024 season. The league also signed a new $2.2 billion media rights deal with Disney, Amazon Prime, and NBCUniversal that will start in 2025. Also Read: Nikola Vucevic buyout watch puts Los Angeles Lakers on high alert for unexpected roster boost Sports economist Andrew Zimbalist told USA Today in July that 'There's no reason why WNBA players shouldn't be able to get to that level. 50% in the WNBA is not the same as 50% in the NBA, but it still makes sense.' The next round of CBA talks is expected to happen before the 2025 WNBA playoffs begin in late August.
