Perfect score, powerful stand: Bengal ISC topper Srijani drops surname for social justice
The student of Future Foundation School in South Kolkata achieved a flawless 100 in all her subjects.
Despite the intense academic schedule, she found time to participate in the Women Reclaim the Night movement on August 14, following the rape-murder of an RG Kar medical student.
"As an individual, it was my decision — supported by my parents and sister. I believe in a society rising above divisions in caste, gender and religion, and beyond economic status. For me, a surname doesn't matter. I've always been known by my first name to my friends and loved ones. Why carry the baggage of a surname? I'm lucky to have the full support of my family," Srijani, the Ranikuthi resident in the city's Tollygunge area told PTI on Saturday.
Her father Debashis Goswami, an Indian Statistical Institute professor and a Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar awardee, and mother Gopa Mukherjee, assistant professor of Gurudas College, were doubly proud for their daughter's feat as well as her principles and values.
"Both my daughters uphold the values and beliefs we inculcated in them since birth. I myself don't use my husband's surname. When we applied for our daughters' birth certificates, we didn't include any surname. We envision a society free from the prejudices of patriarchy and chauvinism," Mukherjee said.
Mukherjee, along with both her daughters, actively participated repeatedly during the R G Kar protests.
"For me, walking with thousands of fellow citizens seeking justice for the RG Kar victim never conflicted with academic preparations," she said.
Srijani, who aspires to pursue research in pure science like her father, said she never saw herself as the typical studious type.
"Beyond study hours, I'd always find time for adda with my parents, sister and close friends," she said.
When asked about her stance on religion, she added, "I wrote 'Humanism' in the slot for religion on the application form."
An official from Future Foundation, Regent Park, noted, "We have no issue if a candidate wishes to opt out of a surname. This is perfectly within the law."

It's a film about the truth, the history, what happened to Bengal and Noakhali, and the Calcutta killing. We made 'The Kashmir Files' as well, we have shown the truth in it," he told PTI in an interview. "These people are always there to target things, no matter what you do. With 'The Tashkent Files' do you not want to know what happened to our great Lal Bahadur Shastri ji, or what happened to the Kashmiri Pandits? You had only heard that they have been thrown out but how did this happen? Now, you know it." The former Rajya Sabha MP and the BJP politician said he plays the role of a madman, who is a riot victim, in the movie who acts as the conscience of the 75, criticised people for targeting the movie without even seeing the trailer of the film. Agnihotri has alleged the trailer launch event of "The Bengal Files" in Kolkata faced sabotage and they had to change the venue at the last Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress has described the film as politically motivated, leading to calls for a boycott and ban."People had not seen the trailer and said, 'It should be banned'. Violence is part of life and if you've done it you must accept it," the actor praised Agnihotri, saying the director somehow always creates a character for him in his films."He puts a lot of work into it. He fanatically looks for the actual story, and that is something amazing. He goes in depth into the story so much that his documentation is always correct." Asked about the controversy surrounding the National Award win for "The Kerala Story", Chakraborty called those criticising the movie's win as "pseudo intellectuals". "People on the jury were not from Kerala, they were from all over the country. They thought this film should get a national award, but then there was so much fuss about it. So, whenever you speak the truth, there will be people (who will oppose it)." Chakraborty, who won the National Film Award for his debut role in Mrinal Sen's 1976 film "Mrigayaa" before finding commercial success in Bollywood with movies such as "Disco Dancer", "Commando", "Pyaar Jhukta Nahi" said at this point in his career, he is receptive to any role that piques his interest."I want to do films that give me gudgudee (tickles) be it Bengali or in Hindi. I'm doing a film with Prabhas called 'Fauji', and with Rajinikanth, which is 'Jailer 2'. These are all commercial films. Though, 'Fauji' has a patriotic feel to it. I do all kinds of films," he said."I'm a senior star, a big star. I've got a great fan following, I do challenging roles, I don't run away from it. It's not that I want to do only 'Disco Dancer' kind of roles only. I've changed myself with time. I'm moving with the times," he said. "The Bengal Files" also stars Saswata Chatterjee, Anupam Kher, Pallavi Joshi, Priyanshu Chatterjee and Darshan Kumar, and is scheduled for a theatrical release on September 5.

Bengaluru student, Hyderabad techie held with drugs worth Rs 7.3 lakh
Hyderabad, Aug 20 (PTI) A 19-year-old student from Bengaluru and a 27-year-old private firm employee were arrested on Monday for allegedly peddling narcotics worth Rs 7.3 lakh, police said. Acting on a tip-off, the Hyderabad Narcotics Enforcement Wing (HNEW) apprehended the duo on August 19 in the limits of Domalguda Police Station, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Task Force) Y V S Sudheendra said in a release. Police seized 12.57 grams of MDMA, 305 grams of ganja, a car and three mobile phones from their possession. UK police probes ‘racially aggravated' attack on 2 elderly Sikh men
Agency: PTI Last Updated: London, Aug 20 (PTI) The British Transport Police (BTP) has made three arrests as it investigates a suspected racially aggravated attack on two elderly Sikh men outside Wolverhampton train station in the West Midlands region of England. A video of the attack last week has been circulating online as community groups expressed their shock and appealed for the local members of Parliament to intervene. BTP said a 17-year-old boy and two men, aged 19 and 25, were arrested in connection with the incident, with videos showing the turban of one of the Sikh men being targeted. The incident happened on August 15. 'I do not underestimate the level of concern this incident has caused to the victims and their families, the local community and beyond," said Superintendent Sue Peters, BTP's local policing commander for the railways covering the Midlands region. 'In the interests of reassuring the community, I can confirm that BTP officers responded very quickly to make three arrests after the 999 call was made and an off-duty BTP Chief Inspector also stopped to assist. 'One 17-year-old boy and two men aged 19 and 25 were arrested in connection. They were taken into custody and later released on bail. The incident is being treated as racially aggravated," she said Tuesday. The two victims have been approached for their statements, which BTP said had taken some time following the incident because of the injuries the men suffered and the shock it caused them. Peters added: 'We arranged a suitable time to speak to them in accordance with their families' wishes, with the ongoing welfare of the victims being our number one priority. There have been some reports circulating that say the delay was caused by resourcing issues – this is not accurate. 'More widely we are engaging with our local MP, the Sikh community, as well as the Sikh Police Association, to listen to their concerns. We will not tolerate this sort of behaviour on the railway network and will be continuing our swift investigation." Sikh Federation UK is among the groups appealing for West Midlands Indian-origin MPs Warinder Juss and Sureena Brackenridge to intervene over what they fear is an increasing number of incidents of anti-Sikh hate crimes. 'A video from Wolverhampton has gone viral showing two elderly Sikh men in their 60s and 70s being viciously assaulted in broad daylight. One of the victims can be seen with his turban laying on the floor, while another is being kicked and punched," the group said. 'This growth in hate towards those that visibly look different and deemed foreign has coincided with the popular right wing 'anti-immigration' agenda," it said. The elderly Sikh men are said to be local taxi drivers who were on duty outside the station when they came under attack.
