UK police probes ‘racially aggravated' attack on 2 elderly Sikh men

London, Aug 20 (PTI) The British Transport Police (BTP) has made three arrests as it investigates a suspected racially aggravated attack on two elderly Sikh men outside Wolverhampton train station in the West Midlands region of England.
A video of the attack last week has been circulating online as community groups expressed their shock and appealed for the local members of Parliament to intervene.
BTP said a 17-year-old boy and two men, aged 19 and 25, were arrested in connection with the incident, with videos showing the turban of one of the Sikh men being targeted.
The incident happened on August 15.
'I do not underestimate the level of concern this incident has caused to the victims and their families, the local community and beyond," said Superintendent Sue Peters, BTP's local policing commander for the railways covering the Midlands region.
'In the interests of reassuring the community, I can confirm that BTP officers responded very quickly to make three arrests after the 999 call was made and an off-duty BTP Chief Inspector also stopped to assist.
'One 17-year-old boy and two men aged 19 and 25 were arrested in connection. They were taken into custody and later released on bail. The incident is being treated as racially aggravated," she said Tuesday.
The two victims have been approached for their statements, which BTP said had taken some time following the incident because of the injuries the men suffered and the shock it caused them.
Peters added: 'We arranged a suitable time to speak to them in accordance with their families' wishes, with the ongoing welfare of the victims being our number one priority. There have been some reports circulating that say the delay was caused by resourcing issues – this is not accurate.
'More widely we are engaging with our local MP, the Sikh community, as well as the Sikh Police Association, to listen to their concerns. We will not tolerate this sort of behaviour on the railway network and will be continuing our swift investigation." Sikh Federation UK is among the groups appealing for West Midlands Indian-origin MPs Warinder Juss and Sureena Brackenridge to intervene over what they fear is an increasing number of incidents of anti-Sikh hate crimes.
'A video from Wolverhampton has gone viral showing two elderly Sikh men in their 60s and 70s being viciously assaulted in broad daylight. One of the victims can be seen with his turban laying on the floor, while another is being kicked and punched," the group said.
'This growth in hate towards those that visibly look different and deemed foreign has coincided with the popular right wing 'anti-immigration' agenda," it said.
The elderly Sikh men are said to be local taxi drivers who were on duty outside the station when they came under attack. PTI AK NPK NPK

3 School Girls Killed In Lightning Strike In Jharkhand
Ranchi: Four persons, including three girl students, died after being struck by lightning in separate incidents in Jharkhand on Thursday, police said. The three students died when lightning struck them while returning home from school at Hondpiri village, under the jurisdiction of Narkopi police station, around 50 km from the state capital. "The students, aged between five and 12 years, were returning home from the Government Middle School in Hondpiri around 3 pm when lightning struck them. They were immediately taken to a hospital, where doctors declared them brought-dead," Narkopi police station in-charge Nageshwar Sahu told PTI. The dead were identified as Pari Oraon (5), Anjlika Kujur (7) and Basmati Oraon (12). The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination. Sahu said the families of the dead would receive a compensation of Rs 4 lakh each, as per government provisions. The second incident took place at Bahera village in Chainpur area of Palamu district, where a 38-year-old farmer died after being struck by lightning, police said. Chainpur police station in-charge Sriram Sharma said the farmer, identified as Luv Kumar Choudhary, was working in a field when lightning struck him. Sharma said he was taken to a hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Punjab police cybercrime wing bust mule account racket
1 2 Chandigarh: Punjab Police's cybercrime wing busted an inter-state mule account racket involved in duping thousands of victims of crores of rupees across the country with the arrest of four persons, director general of police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said here on Thursday. A mule account is a bank account used by criminals to receive, transfer, or launder illicit funds without the knowledge or sometimes with the complicity of the account holder. "Those arrested have been identified as Gautam (23), Ehsas (24), and Akash (20), all residents of Amritsar, and Anmol (21) from Fazilka. Anmol is full-time into operating mule accounts, Gautam is unemployed, and Ehsaas has taken a hotel on contract at Amritsar and runs it, while Akash worked for a short time in a company and is presently involved in the mule accounts cyber fraud racket," the DGP said. "Police have also effected a huge recovery of cash amounting to Rs 10.9 lakh, along with nine mobile phones, one laptop, 32 debit cards, 10 SIM cards, 15 bank passbooks, and one cheque book from their possession," he added. The DGP said the racket module was involved in obtaining bank accounts, especially from economically weaker sections for a small amount, and then using them to layer and transfer fraudulent funds acquired through various cybercrimes. "The accused actively operated this criminal ecosystem for the last two years, using hundreds of mule accounts from different banks across Punjab to transfer illicit money abroad through cryptocurrency exchanges like Binance and DCX," he said. Special director general of police (special DGP) cybercrime V Neeraja said, "Meticulous analysis of data on 6,000 mule accounts used in cyber fraud bank transfers, which was shared by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), MHA, by Cybercrime DSP Ashok Kumar led to the registration of the FIR at the State Cybercrime Police station and Inspector Gaganpreet Singh led a team that conducted the investigation and identified the suspects. " She added, "Based on I4C's hotspot analysis, an FIR was registered against 300 mule accounts of Punjab Gramin Bank and investigation traced 100 mule accounts to one location, in Abohar." The special DGP said that the investigation revealed the accused were part of multiple cyber fraud groups on the Telegram platform, with admins suspected from South-East Asia managing the ecosystem. "The kingpins trained these local operatives on converting Indian currency into cryptocurrency. Anmol from Abohar was the key supplier, sending mule kits via courier to his associates in Amritsar, who then activated internet banking services to facilitate the transactions. They received a 10-20% commission for their services," she said. She said all accused were on police remand, and further investigations were ongoing to identify the kingpins based in India and abroad, and to examine any possible involvement of bank officials. Advisory Issued The police issued an advisory, stating, "It is advised to the public not to provide their bank accounts or SIM cards issued in their name to anyone on the pretext of small money or any job offer, etc, as the same are further used for cyber fraud crimes. In case any person approaches with such offers, they should immediately report to the district cybercrime police station. If anyone becomes a victim of cyber fraud, they should immediately call helpline 1930 to report and protect their money from going to the hands of cyber fraudsters. 2 Bangladesh Border Guards Illegally Enter Tripura, 1 Detained
Guwahati: The Border Security Force (BSF) on Thursday detained an armed Bangladeshi border guard who allegedly crossed into Indian territory through the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura. According to BSF sources, the incident occurred in the afternoon at Kamthana village under Madhupur police station in Sepahijala district of Tripura. The apprehended trooper has been identified as Mohammad Miraj Islam, a jawan of the 60th battalion of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), posted at Madla in Brahmanbaria district of Bangladesh. Sources said Miraj, along with another BGB jawan, intruded nearly 100 metres inside Indian territory through border gate No. 136-137 and ventured into a tea garden. Alert BSF personnel noticed the movement and rushed to the spot, managing to capture Miraj, while the other intruder escaped back across the border. At present, the detained BGB jawan is being interrogated at the Kamthana BSF camp. "He was armed and his intentions are being verified," the BSF official said. Simultaneously, telephonic communication has already taken place between the commandants of BSF and BGB, and the matter is likely to be resolved through a flag meeting scheduled for tomorrow. The unusual breach has heightened security concerns along the sensitive Indo-Bangladesh border in Tripura, which is often vulnerable to smuggling and illegal crossings.
