Caldwell blames red card on his Scottish accent
Exeter City manager Gary Caldwell believes his Scottish accent is the reason he was sent off at Lincoln City last week.The Grecians boss was sent from the dugout for his reaction to the fourth official after a late winning goal was disallowed for a handball in the 0-0 draw.Stirling-born Caldwell says he did not use bad language or run towards the fourth official at Sincil Bank. The former Celtic captain and Scotland defender addressed the issue for the first time on Thursday as his red card meant he was not allowed to conduct post-match interviews after Saturday's game."I obviously went over to the fourth official, who is 20 yards away because that's where the fourth official is at that stadium," Caldwell explained to BBC Radio Devon."So there is no way to communicate with the fourth official unless you leave your technical area. I didn't run, he said I was aggressive, people who know me, I've got a Scottish accent."Jen (Caldwell's wife) complains all the time how aggressive I am to her, to the kids, to the dog - I think it's the Scottish accent."It comes across very aggressive, but I didn't swear, I didn't run, in my opinion I wasn't aggressive."My accent and my Scottishness is aggressive, but yeah, I got sent off for that."
Caldwell has received a letter from the football authorities regarding his red card, which is his second this year.The 42-year-old was given a two-match ban and fined £2,750 after being sent from the dugout in the 2-1 loss at Wycombe Wanderers in January. But Caldwell feels his passion is being mistaken for aggression."I think we're getting a reputation for being ill-disciplined when I just think we're passionate and want the very best for our football club," he added."I don't think we're getting that and ultimately I'm paying the price and I do have to probably look at it have to change, and probably try and change my accent and be a little bit more 'Englified'."I can't obviously speak in my own accent because it comes across very aggressive, so I'm going to need to look at it because I do accept that it can't keep happening."But this time I genuinely feel like it was very, very harsh - a yellow card would have been more than enough."

Rutherglen man who chucked bottle at Celtic goalkeeper jailed
Andrew Watt, 34, launched the missile at the Finnish international at Ibrox Stadium on May 4, 2025. Andrew Watt (Image: Mike Gibbons, Spindrift) Rangers drew 1-1 with the Scottish Premiership champions that afternoon. Watt initially threw a cigarette at Mr Sinisalo after Celtic scored their equaliser through striker Adam Idah. He then picked up a half bottle of Buckfast and hurled it at the goalkeeper, who celebrated the goal in front of the Rangers fans. The bottle was later handed to police officers by a Rangers substitute. Watt was identified the following day on CCTV due to his "distinctive white teeth." Watt pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to assaulting Mr Sinisalo. Sheriff Mark McGuire told Watt, of Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, that his actions were not of a "fan" but a "vicious drunken hooligan." "That is his job - your victim was doing his job - the man was at his work. In what possible world could you or anyone else think it is acceptable to throw a bottle at someone at his work? "Had the bottle hit him, the consequences could have been catastrophic, career-ending or worse. In a febrile atmosphere in a stadium which holds over 50,000 people, your actions could have sparked a riot. "It was not just an assault on Mr Sinisalo - what you did could have endangered everyone, man, woman and child that afternoon. "In all the circumstances, to punish you and deter others from acting like you did and to protect the public, I am satisfied there is no alternative to a custodial sentence." Watt was also banned from all football matches for a period of six-and-a-half years. The court heard that after Adam Idah scored, there was a VAR check on the goal to see if it would be allowed. After a two-to-three-minute stoppage, the referee awarded the equalising goal to Celtic. Prosecutor Leo McGinn said: "At that point, Mr Sinisalo turned back to his own goal towards the Rangers fans and pumped his fists. "This sparked an angry reaction from the Rangers fans behind the goal, and a half bottle of Buckfast was thrown in his direction. "The bottle did not strike him but landed on the field of play." A CCTV investigation was carried out by police the next day, which identified Watt as being responsible. Mr McGinn added: "He was seen to throw a lit cigarette in Mr Sinisalo's direction, which had not been spotted by officers. "Watt could be identified by his build and distinctive white teeth." Watt later handed himself in to police officers after he was aware that they were looking for him. Kevin Corr, defending, told the sentencing that Mr Sinisalo was "not gloating" before the assault took place. The lawyer added: "The stadium was tense at the time while the decision was being awarded. "My client had been consuming alcohol on the morning of the game and continued drinking during the match. "It was not a full half bottle of Buckfast as it was in the second half of the match. He knows that this is the behaviour of someone in their teens rather than someone in his mid-thirties - there is no attempt to minimise or justify what happened." The hearing was told that Watt has 21 previous convictions, which include two football-related matters from 2013 and 2015, the latter of which saw him jailed for 10 months with a three-year football ban.

Sondre Orjasaeter tells Celtic he is 'ready' for transfer with Sidibe 'exit plan' in place as £4.2m bargain vetoed
The Scottish champions are ramping up their summer business after snapping up Kieran Tierney Sarpsborg winger Sondre Orjasaeter has told Celtic he is now "ready" to make a move away from Norway. The Norwegian under 21 cap came close to joining Brendan Rodgers ' side in January but felt he wasn't ready to make he leap to the Premiership. He told Danish outlet TV2: "Now I feel ready to take the step, while I am doing well here with full focus on Sarpsborg. But a transfer is not something I think about very much. "I think that if it happens, it happens. It's not like I'll be depressed if there's no transfer." Reports in France have touted towering Guingamp midfielder Kalidou Sidibe with a move to Glasgow's east end - with some stating a £1.7m bid has already been put on the table. And club president Fred Le Grand has admitted that the 6'6 player that the player is already inching towards the exit door after the club failed to earn promotion from Ligue 2. He told Le Telegramme: "The market is calm, it's even very unusual. There are discussions, but nothing's happening, nothing concrete, but Kalidou Sidibe has a potential exit plans." Reports in Portugal also claimed Celtic were in contact with Rio Ave over a deal for Demir Tiknaz - with the Portuegese side holding an option to buy in his Besitkas loan. However, the £4.2million trigger has now expired - and any deal looks to have been place on hold. Takvim claim that Tiknaz will remain part of the Besiktas first-team for the next season after boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was impressed with the 20-year-old's stint in Portugal.
