Govt foregoes ₹99,000 crore corporate tax revenue in FY24, says MoS Finance. Here's why
The minister, in a written reply at the Rajya Sabha, provided estimates of the revenue lost due to tax incentives, including various corporate tax deductions, from FY 2019-20 to 2023-24.
The government waived ₹ 98,999 crore tax revenue in 2023-24, compared to ₹ 88,109 crore in 2022-23 and ₹ 96,892 crore in 2021-22.
In the fiscal years 2020-21 and 2019-20, the total amount of corporate tax revenue foregone was ₹ 75,218 crore and ₹ 8,043 crore, respectively.
The minister shared the data on corporate tax revenue foregone, in response to a question from AAP MP Raghav Chadha on the estimated loss to the exchequer due to the corporate tax reductions from 2019-20 to 2024-25.
Chaudhary said that the estimated revenue foregone for the financial year 2024-25 till date is not available.
Since 2016, corporate tax rates have gradually decreased as exemptions and incentives are phased out.
The Finance Act, 2016, lowered corporate tax rates to 29% of total income with the aim to encourage growth, increase investment, and generate more employment.
The corporate tax rate was lowered to 25 per cent of total income in 2017, with the goal of benefiting smaller domestic companies with an annual turnover of ₹ 50 crores and making it more attractive for firms to adopt a company structure.
In September 2019, the government announced a reduction in the base corporate tax rate, lowering it to 22 per cent from 30 per cent for existing companies. For new manufacturing firms incorporated after October 1, 2019, the rate was decreased to 15 per cent from 25 per cent, on the condition that they forgo all exemptions and incentives.
Under the Finance Act, 2024, tax rates on the income of foreign companies, excluding those charged at special rates, have been reduced from 40 per cent to 35 per cent to encourage investment and employment.

'A case has been registered against one Tracy Clerk, Paul J Tudor, Bran Camron, and Benjamin Jadore, along with an entity named Metaxoption Company under sections 318(4) (cheating) and 316(5) (criminal breach of trust) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act," an officer said. Not until we get it resolved: Trump on trade negotiations with India
New York/Washington, Aug 8 (PTI) US President Donald Trump has ruled out the possibility of trade negotiations with India, until the issue of tariffs is resolved. 'No, not until we get it resolved," Trump said in the Oval Office in response to a question on whether he expects increased trade negotiations with India since he has announced 50 per cent tariffs on the country. Last week, Trump had announced 25 per cent reciprocal tariffs on India that came into effect from August 7. The US president also signed an executive order slapping an additional 25 per cent levy on India for New Delhi's purchases of Russian oil, bringing the total duties to 50 per cent, among the highest imposed by the US on any country in the world. The additional 25 per cent duty will come into effect after 21 days or August 27. Responding to the tariffs, the Ministry of External Affairs has said that the targeting of India is 'unjustified and unreasonable". 'Like any major economy, India will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security," it said. On the current situation between India and the US, prominent Indian-American attorney Ravi Batra said 'much more is at stake" amid Trump's tariffs. He described as 'unfortunate" that Russian President Vladimir Putin did not accept a ceasefire with Ukraine as wanted by Trump. 'Hurting India is to hurt Russia," Batra said in a post on X. 'But it hurts us too, much more," he said adding that America needs the Russian president to enter into a 'genuine" ceasefire with Ukraine, 'free-of-deception by any, and then get President Xi (Jinping of China) and Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi to be American allies too, along with Putin." 'It's time for a mature reset, or we risk a domino effect that hurts all and unravels multilateralism and gives us unbridled chaos that even creative Wall Street and Federal Reserve can't handle," he said. NEW DELHI: Parliament on Thursday passed the Coastal Shipping Bill, 2025, with the Rajya Sabha giving its approval amid protests by Opposition members demanding a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. The proposed legislation aims to promote coastal shipping as an eco-friendly and cost-effective mode of transport while reducing the compliance burden for Indian shipping operators in line with the Centre's ease of doing business initiative. The bill, cleared by the Lok Sabha on April 3, was passed by a voice vote in the Upper House amid sloganeering by Opposition MPs. Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, who introduced the bill, said the new framework would help unlock the full potential of India's 7,500-km coastline. 'To support the goal of increasing India's coastal cargo share to 230 million tonnes by 2030, we need a legal framework that minimises regulations and maximises facilitation,' he said. Sonowal said presently, regulation and licensing of coastal shipping was governed under the Merchant Shipping Act, 1958. 'This bill provides a holistic, forward looking and progressive framework suited to today's commercial realities in line with globally prevalent practices,' the minister said. Earlier, when the Rajya Sabha convened in the morning, the House was adjourned till 2 pm after Opposition parties protested the rejection of 25 adjournment notices under Rule 267 seeking a discussion on SIR. Deputy Chairman Harivansh, while rejecting the notices, said none of them met the criteria laid out under the rule. As disruptions continued, Harivansh urged MPs to allow the House to function, stating that Zero Hour remained available for raising important issues.
