AMD Stock Rises on HSBC Upgrade to ‘Buy' with Street-High Price Target

Lee has become increasingly optimistic about AMD's long-term growth potential and its improved market performance in the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) and CPU (Central Processing Unit) markets. In May, the analyst upgraded AMD stock to 'Hold' from 'Sell,' citing the company's artificial intelligence (AI) deal with Saudi Arabia and the easing of tariff tensions.
AMD's Earnings Could Mark a Turning Point for the Stock
Although the four-star analyst has not provided exact reasons for his bullish view on AMD, Lee may have updated his outlook in anticipation of the company's upcoming second-quarter results. AMD is set to release its Q2FY25 results after the market closes on August 5.
The Street expects AMD to report adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $0.49 on revenues of $7.41 billion. This represents a 29% year-over-year decline in adjusted EPS but a 27% increase in revenues compared to Q2FY24. Notably, AMD has exceeded earnings expectations in six of the last eight consecutive quarters.
AMD Stock Is Benefiting from Nvidia's Strong Performance
AMD competes in the global chip market with its larger rival Nvidia (NVDA). The overall bullish sentiment surrounding the semiconductor and AI chip sectors pushed NVDA stock to a $4 trillion market capitalization yesterday, making it the first public company to reach this milestone. AMD is also benefiting from Nvidia's strong stock performance.
Meanwhile, AMD is experiencing significant demand for its next-generation MI355 AI GPUs, X86-based Servers, personal computer CPUs, and custom SoCs (System on a Chip). This sustained demand momentum is helping AMD capture a larger market share in these areas, leading Wall Street to become more bullish about AMD's stock performance as its earnings draw near.
Other analysts have also raised their price targets for AMD stock recently. For instance, Citi analyst Christopher Danely lifted his price target for AMD to $145 from $120, while Mizuho Securities analyst Vijay Rakesh raised his price target to $152 from $130.
Is AMD a Good Stock to Buy?
Despite the bullish sentiment surrounding the semiconductor market, analysts remain divided on AMD's long-term outlook. On TipRanks, AMD stock has a Moderate Buy consensus rating based on 25 Buys and 10 Hold ratings. Also, the average Advanced Micro Devices price target of $134.03 implies 3.2% downside potential from current levels. Year-to-date, AMD stock has gained 14.6%.

Nvidia isn't just growing, it's a profit machine. Investors paying 40x forward earnings know exactly what they're getting: a dominant player in AI with unmatched pricing power, scale, and ecosystem control. Ahead of the company's August 27 earnings report, analysts at UBS and Wedbush expressed confidence in its AI-driven growth. They cited a powerful combination of surging AI infrastructure spending and renewed traction in key analyst Timothy Arcuri reaffirmed a Buy rating with a $205 price target, pointing to robust tailwinds supporting Nvidia's long-term growth. Wedbush's Matt Bryson went further, lifting his price target from $175 to $210 and reiterating an Outperform rating. Bryson also raised his revenue and earnings forecasts, underscoring stronger-than-expected demand trends, a recovery in China beginning in the fiscal third quarter, and expanding hyperscale and neocloud spending through 2026. Bryson emphasized that hyperscale capital expenditures rose 67% year over year in the second quarter, evidence that AI buildouts are accelerating and disproportionately benefiting Nvidia, which commands a dominant share of AI server value. He noted that neocloud operators and AI model builders are set to sustain data center investments well into 2025, with further tailwinds expected in late 2025 and 2026 as long-term infrastructure projects come online. On the product side, Bryson pointed to robust demand for Nvidia's B200 and GB200 GPUs, with supply occasionally unable to keep pace. He highlighted growing expectations for NVL72 rack shipments in the second half of 2025, supported by bullish commentary from manufacturing partner Foxconn. In China, server builds have rebounded sharply following U.S. licensing approvals for Nvidia's H20 chips, though policymakers in Beijing are simultaneously pushing domestic alternatives. Looking ahead, Bryson said GB300 server shipments remain on track for late third or early fourth quarter, while the transition to Blackwell Ultra chips is expected to proceed without major disruptions. He also reaffirmed that early 2026 production of the Rubin architecture appears on schedule despite speculation of delays, underscoring confidence in Nvidia's execution. Based on these dynamics, Bryson lifted his fiscal 2027 EPS estimate to $6.10, arguing Nvidia's valuation is supported by its role at the center of global AI infrastructure expansion, with major projects underway in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Europe, and Asia. LG's massive 77-inch C5 OLED TV is more than $1,000 off
If you want to spend the rest of the year catching up on the movies, TV shows, and video games you missed over the summer, you should enjoy them on a really nice screen. Thankfully, you can get a 77-inch LG C5 OLED TV for around $2,496.99 ($1,203 off), its lowest price ever at Amazon, B&H Photo, and Best Buy. The C5 has a 120Hz panel, four HDMI 2.1 ports and support for both AMD FreeSync Premium and Nvidia G-Sync, so gamers can play PC and current-generation console titles in 4K at up to 120 frames per second. LG says its custom-designed processor can upscale lower quality video to look cleaner on a large, 4K set. The processor also enables AI Picture Pro, a feature that analyzes what you're watching and adjusts the TV's settings — including brightness, resolution, and clarity — in real time to present the best picture. LG says the C5's Perfect Black and Perfect Color features allow the TV's picture to look great in bright rooms, which OLED TVs have struggled with in the past. It also supports both HDR10 and Dolby Vision, so games and videos encoded in those formats will have better color and contrast. A benefit of picking up an OLED TV is that each pixel is illuminated individually, so you completely avoid blooming, which is what happens when a TV has to increase the brightness of a larger section of the set to accommodate a bright object. AMD Dublin Hosts Irish Technovation Finals
In Dublin, Ireland, AMD hosted a day of fun, learning and inspiration for young women students from all over Ireland interested in STEM in 2024. The annual event showcases the projects of women students who participate in the Technovation Challenge, a global program that empowers girls to solve real-world problems using technology. Students work in teams to develop mobile apps that address issues like health, education, environment and social volunteers welcomed more than 100 students from ten counties across Ireland, along with their mentors, teachers and parents. Students demoed their apps, received feedback from AMD judges, networked with other participants and enjoyed a bean bag zone, robotics room, table tennis, karaoke and Xbox games. The day wrapped up with an award ceremony, announcing winners in the junior and senior the event, AMD in Dublin collaborated with Teen-Turn, a volunteer organization that helps girls interested in STEM, especially those from disadvantaged areas or backgrounds.'Our team cannot emphasize this enough: AMD is a true partner in change making,' said Dr. Joanne Dolan, Teen-Turn end of 2024, the AMD Foundation awarded a $100,000 grant to Technovation to support young women across eight countries in developing skills in AI and entrepreneurship.
