Rafflesia Name Change Symbolic But Risks Global Scientific Confusion — UMK Dean
KOTA BHARU, Aug 21 (Bernama) -- The proposal to replace the name Rafflesia with a local term represents a symbolic effort to decolonise the national consciousness and reclaim Malaysia's identity, but it requires careful consideration, said Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) Faculty of Earth Sciences Dean Associate Prof Dr Zulhazman Hamzah. He said the idea reflects an aspiration to elevate local heritage that predates Western colonisation, while recognising the indigenous communities who have long known the flower. 'Symbolically, it is a declaration that Malaysia owns its heritage entirely, free from colonial legacy. However, from scientific, cultural and practical perspectives, many factors must be weighed carefully,' he said in a statement today. The scholar noted that the naming of Rafflesia dates back to 1818 when it was discovered in Bengkulu, Sumatra, by Sir Stamford Raffles and Dr Joseph Arnold, before being formally named by botanist Robert Brown in 1821. Zulhazman added that adopting a local name, such as bunga pakma or terms rooted in ethnic traditions, would serve as recognition of existing traditional knowledge. The Rafflesia, known by various local names, reflects the country's cultural diversity. The Kelantanese call it bunga Pokma, the Temiar in Lojing refer to it as bunga Malang, the Kadazan-Dusun as bunga Patma, and the southern Thai Malays as bunga Kekmo. Whereas in Thailand, it is known as Bua Put. Zulhazman said recognising these local names would not only preserve linguistic heritage but also serve as an educational tool to understand pre-colonial history, biodiversity and the importance of environmental conservation. However, he cautioned that replacing Rafflesia with a local name poses significant challenges, particularly scientific and global confusion. The term has been used in international scientific literature for more than 200 years to refer to a genus comprising over 40 species across Southeast Asia.

27 Major Rivers Polluted In 2024
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 (Bernama) -- Twenty-seven rivers, or four per cent of the 672 major rivers monitored nationwide in 2024, were found to be polluted, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. He said that, based on a report by the Department of Environment (DOE), of the 672 rivers, 475 or 71 per cent were classified as clean, while another 170 or 25 per cent fell into the moderately polluted category. Fadillah, who is also Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, said that the main pollutant parameters identified included Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Ammonia Nitrogen (AN), Total Suspended Solids (TSS) and Dissolved Oxygen (DO). 'Overall, there are no rivers in the country at level five, which indicates severe (pollution), but several still require attention to ensure they reach a safe level. 'We want to ensure that river water is not only (suitable) for people to bathe and enjoy recreational activities but, most importantly, for consumption,' he told reporters after chairing the Special Committee to Address Deterioration of River Water Quality (JKKAS) meeting here today. Meanwhile, Fadillah said the meeting proposed that state authorities enforce new standards for urban and rural wastewater effluent discharges, based on a study by the National Water Research Institute (NAHRIM). He said it covered 11 main parameters, including pH, BOD, COD, suspended solids, oil and grease, nitrogen, mercury, colour and solid waste. Fadillah said the meeting also agreed on the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) organising a workshop to outline the standards for drainage water discharge into river basins, involving various agencies, particularly the local authorities responsible for drainage management. He also suggested that state governments adopt locally developed technology by NAHRIM, including suspended load extractors, oil and grease traps using IoT technology, and the Intriguard system for marking river reserves to prevent external pollution from entering river basins.

TUMPAT, Aug 21 (Bernama) -- The Jiwa@Komuniti MADANI National Day and Malaysia Day 2025 programme in Tumpat successfully brought together local communities in a strong spirit of patriotism. Tumpat MADANI community leader Ahmad Shafik Ab Rahman said the programme, which also saw the participation of 20 members from the Malaysian Armed Forces Veterans Association (PVATM), was a continuation of the launch of National Month at both national and state levels, with Tumpat among the earliest districts to roll out the initiative. He said the launch of the district-level programme today would be followed by Merdeka-themed activities organised by 12 MADANI communities, including the decorative display of the Jalur Gemilang, traditional sports, and the National Day eve celebration. 'One of the highlights is a football match featuring government department teams and a fireworks display on Merdeka Eve, which is expected to attract more than 2,000 visitors,' he told Bernama after the launch here today. He said the programme also featured a three-wheeled 'coley' competition, with the most creatively decorated entry, reflecting patriotic spirit, receiving a prize. Meanwhile, Kelantan Information Department (JAPEN) assistant director Hasim Mohamed said the Fly the Jalur Gemilang campaign in Tumpat was held in line with national-level programmes, including the Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang convoy. 'We are also carrying out the One House, One Jalur Gemilang campaign to ensure every home flies the national flag during the national month. 'Throughout the National Month from July 27 to Sept 16, a total of 135 MADANI Communities in Kelantan will also organise independence-themed programmes in their areas,' he said. Hasim said other activities include Jalur Gemilang distribution, a home-decorating contest, and programmes with veterans in recognition of their contributions.
