IN a new film about a New York matchmaker, in the glitzy, hollow world of high-end dating, not being rich rules you out as a contender, no matter how hot, charming or clever you are. M aterialists, directed by Korean-American writer and director Celine Song, stars Dakota Fanning, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans and is based on Song's experience of working as a matchmaker in her early 20s.
She quit to make her first film, 2023's quietly magnificent Past Lives, which was nominated for two Oscars — it's about a South Korean woman, married in the US, who emotionally reconnects with her Korean first love — but has revisited matchmaking in her second film to explore the disconnect between dating and falling in love, and how relationship economics depersonalise.
This is a people economy where individuals repeatedly sell themselves to each other, while keeping tight hold of the receipt. People in Song's film have lists, non-negotiables, tick-boxes: 'Nobody with an over 20 BMI'; 'Nobody who likes cats'; 'An income over 500 grand'.
Song is deeply invested in love, asking rhetorically in a New York Times interview, 'What's more important?'
People, she says, are her 'drug of choice', but she's happily married to a man with whom she shares many connections.
She thinks that, unlike dating, love is easy. Especially compared to American dating, where it's not just accepted, but expected, to be transactional and materialistic, to turn falling in love in to a business deal.
In her 2011 book Honey Money: The Power Of Erotic Capital, Dr Catherine Hakim — a sociologist at the London School of Economics — urged women to harness their erotic capital, which she defined as a combination of 'beauty, social skills, good dress sense, physical fitness, liveliness, sex appeal, and sexual competence' — to attract a high-quality mate. How very Jane Austen. But had we not left such Mrs Bennett-type activity in the past?
Survival of the 'fittest'
Today, although women are financially independent, pregnancy requires us to take time off work, which puts us at a financial disadvantage.
Even now, in 2025, our careers and incomes continue to suffer when we pause to have children, hence the need to have a partner to share the responsibilities. This has been the basis of human reproductive relationships since the dawn of time.
'Attraction to financial stability in partners does have evolutionary roots,' says psychologist Dr Malie Coyne.
'Historically, financial status was always important in mate selection, because, for our ancestors, a partner's ability to provide resources, like food, shelter, and protection, was directly linked to survival and the wellbeing of offspring.
'This financial stability remains relevant today, as it provides long-term security and stability, but, obviously, it shouldn't overshadow the emotional and interpersonal compatibility.
'In terms of the increase in the cost of living, particularly in areas of housing, education, and healthcare, it has made this financial stability more of an immediate and practical concern in forming relationships — maybe more so than a few years ago. In a world where people are facing rising expenses, economic stability becomes less of a luxury and more of a basic necessity for many, which will then likely contribute to this increased emphasis on financial compatibility in modern relationships…to avoid future stress or financial strain.
'We are looking for compatibility in all areas of life with a prospective partner, and financial stability is just one of those areas.'

Song highlights how dating, with its lists and its demands, is all about control, even though falling in love with another person is one of the few things over which we have very little control: It just happens. Whether you're rich enough to afford a matchmaker or, like the majority, make do with swipe apps, dating has been reduced to an activity akin to shopping.
'The ease of online dating and the emphasis on shopping lists, which is more the Tinder culture of swiping through profiles based on material attributes, have intensified this focus,' says Coyne.
'Online dating promotes snap judgements, narrowing the scope for proper connection.
'People might overlook potential chemistry due to these surface-level factors, like financial status.
'The rise of individualism and financial independence has also altered how we view financial compatibility. In earlier times, a partner's financial situation would have been more critical because women were dependent on men for their security.
'The cultural shifts towards more transactional relationships, where qualities like financial status are weighed more heavily, are partly a response to the modern pressures we face. But it's important to note that relationships have always involved exchanges: Emotional, social, financial. Relationships involve exchanges, which sounds less romantic.'
Unless, of course, you're only interested in sexual connection, in which case someone's financial status isn't important. It all depends on your priorities.
Love not a set of criteria
Rather than writing lists of your ideal partner's qualities and attributes, actual dating is the best way to find out if they are suitable. I went out with someone who didn't have the price of a cinema ticket, followed by someone who owned five houses; neither relationship worked long-term. We were out of sync.
Financial values extend beyond how much you have in the bank; they are about attitudes to work, use of time, and how you want to live.
'Face-to-face interactions allow for a fuller, more authentic connection, like humour and warmth, which may not be captured online,' says Coyne. 'To counter the transactional, surface-level nature of online dating, meeting in person allows for an organic discovery of compatibility. The goal is to embrace vulnerability and make space for unexpected emotional connection, which might transcend the shopping-list mentality. I'd suggest becoming friends with your partner beforehand and seeing if your values align. Finances will not be the main thing.'
Or, as Song reminds us, if we are too hung up on someone's bank balance or height, what happens if they change their job, or grow old and shrink?
However, there's a big difference between expecting a prospective partner to be a 6'4' fintech squillionaire with a six-pack and a penthouse and disempowering yourself by partnering with someone to whom you cede financial control.
'Who holds the purse strings often holds the power in the relationship, even when it comes to booking and paying for couples therapy,' says Orlagh Reid, a psychotherapist and Gottman method couples therapist.
'Traditionally — and sadly still the case across Ireland — we know that women earn far less than their male counterparts as they tend to dedicate time to raising families, caring for elders, and are less financially secure.
'As a result, money can become a bargaining tool when things begin to decline in relationships and marriages. For women, in a world of gender inequality, it should be high on their priority list to be financially stable, secure, and compatible when it comes to money matters.'
Money is one of the top-five causes of relationship breakdown. 'Finances — including attitudes and values towards money and wealth, which may include work ethic and education — should be relatively high on the list of priorities when choosing a life partner,' Reid says.
'I have seen first-hand in my practice how many men resort to financial, coercive control of their partners. I believe it's probably the most prevalent form of abuse and control in modern-day relationships.
'Sadly, money does still equal power and freedom, so I would encourage younger women and men to become financially independent and focus on their professional lives first, before investing in any long-term relationship, to ensure equality and stability later in life.'
Like Coyne, she urges us to remember that while compatible financial attitudes are important — even if you earn the same, if you're a saver and your partner's a splurger, or vice versa, this can be tricky — long-term compatibility extends far beyond money.
'Healthy, sustainable relationships depend on different aspects of compatibility,' Reid says. 'Communication styles, emotional compatibility and intelligence, values, equality, respect, family values, gender roles and fundamental similarities rather than differences.
'Money may not be initially an important topic, while chemistry and desire are running high, but it should be a non-negotiable topic to discuss at length to establish compatibility for long-term relationship success. Attitudes and values towards money, saving, spending, investing, planning, and making life dreams come true are all important.'
So, while you may find the idea of an American-style shopping list ridiculous, do yourself and your prospective life partner a favour and have the money talk before you make any big decisions together.

US rapper Sean Kingston sentenced to 3.5 years for fraud

US rapper Sean Kingston has been sentenced to three and a half years in federal prison in a million-dollar fraud scheme. The Beautiful Girls singer was convicted earlier this year, along with his mother, in a wire fraud scheme where they stole luxury items including watches, a 232-inch LED TV, a bulletproof Cadillac Escalade and furniture, exceeding $1m (€850,000). The Fire Burning singer, whose legal name is Kisean Anderson and his mother used the rapper's celebrity status to get victims to give them products and when payment was due would send them fake wire receipts. The Eenie Meenie singer apologised to the court before being sentenced and said he'd learned from his actions, according to US media. His mother, Janice Turner, was sentenced in July to five years in prison. The Jamaican-American rapper was arrested in 2024 in California, where he was set to perform at an Army training base in the Mojave Desert. His arrest occurred after authorities raided his home near Fort Lauderdale in Florida, where his mother was taken into custody. Federal prosecutors said Kingston reached out to victims on social media, saying he wanted to purchase luxury goods and then invited them to his various homes in South Florida. Kingston promised these victims to post their products on his social media and sometimes offered to refer their products to other "high profile celebrities", federal prosecutors said. But when payment was due for the products, he or his mother sent them fake wire receipts that falsely showed they'd sent over the money, prosecutors said at trial. Authorities said most victims were never paid, though several did receive payment after law enforcement got involved or lawsuits were filed. A key piece of evidence shown at trial were text messages between Kingston and his mother discussing the fake payment receipts, according to US news outlet CBS. "I told you to make [a] fake receipt," he wrote in one. Kingston's lawyer Zeljka Bozanic said the singer was "a soft guy who grew up poor when he rose to fame overnight". He said Kingston still had the mentality of a teenager and didn't know how to run his bank accounts or business.

Materialists director Celine Song: ‘How are we supposed to find love when dating is reduced to a numbers game?'

Ten years before Past Lives , her first feature, scored two Oscar nominations, Celine Song was a playwriting graduate struggling to make ends meet in New York. Between off-Broadway ambitions and other theatrical projects, she found a day job at an upmarket matchmaking agency, where her wealthy clients typically took a transactional view of love and marriage. The men demanded slim women under 30; the women, in turn, wanted men who were at least six feet tall. And everyone wanted a high-earning match. 'I became disillusioned with the job right away,' Song says. 'Because you sit down and then they're telling you all these numbers. I had just gotten married, and I was thinking, Well, all these numbers seem to matter very much. Fine, you want somebody who's 6ft tall, but the average American man is 5ft 8in. 'Let's say someone is 6ft tall. Hopefully, you fall in love with this person. Because if you are still together when you're 90, you are going to shrink. We all are. I'm 5ft 4in now. I'm going to be 5ft 2in. READ MORE 'And, also, the global economy is so broken; just because you have that big-salary job now doesn't mean you're going to have that job tomorrow. What happens once that person loses that job? Because it sounds like you just love the salary.' But, for all the grasping demands and fanciful expectations Song faced, she was loath to abandon the matchmaking business. It was a wild ride for a former psychology student. Materialists: Dakota Johnson and Pedro Pascal 'If someone asks me, 'What's your drug of choice?' I would say, 'People',' the film-maker, whose second feature, Materialists , has just been released, says. 'I'm obsessed with people, especially these people. Because I'm in art, everybody I know is an artist. Suddenly I'm meeting private-equity managers. 'These people were looking at me and telling me what their heart desired. Telling me intimate details that they wouldn't tell their therapists. I learned more about people in those six months than I did in any other part of my life. 'I was addicted to it. It was meant to be a day job. I'd pay rent with it and then I'd write. But then I realised I hadn't written in five months. I had to quit because it was too fun.' Materialists plays as a contemporary spin on the pragmatic and economic dimensions of romantic relationships that Jane Austen famously addressed in the first line of Pride and Prejudice: 'It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.' Song's on-screen surrogate is Lucy ( Dakota Johnson ), a successful but cynical matchmaker who, in common with her clients, treats relationships like business deals. She finds her carefully constructed worldview upended when she must choose between Harry ( Pedro Pascal ), a charming, wealthy (and tall) financier who seems to check all the boxes, and John ( Chris Evans ), a broke, jobbing-actor ex who knows that she likes to – yikes! – mix beer with Coca-Cola. An all-out war between the head and the heart ensues. Materialists: Dakota Johnson and Chris Evans 'The movie is about the commodification and objectification of human beings – in dating, yes, but also in work, in society at large,' Song says. 'We're pushed to present the 'most valuable' version of ourselves, like products. But merchandise can't love merchandise. People can love people. And commodification inevitably leads to dehumanisation. You see it happen in the film. 'The question becomes, How are we supposed to find love – this ancient mystery and miracle – when dating is reduced to numbers like height, weight, income? 'People sometimes ask if finding love means lowering your standards. I'd never tell someone to compromise on what they're truly entitled to: simply, that the person they love is in love with them. 'What worries me is how easily people accept a loveless relationship for material comfort while being rigid about things like height or income. You're not entitled to those. You are entitled to love.' For decades, from the screwball sparkle of It Happened One Night to the sleek charm of When Harry Met Sally, the romantic comedy was Hollywood's most dependable comfort food. By the early 2000s the genre was in freefall as studios turned to blockbusters and hit indie variants – (500) Days of Summer, Safety Not Guaranteed – dried up. Materialists attempts to resuscitate the romcom as a date-night conversation starter. It's a criminally undervalued genre, the director says. 'Romcoms are an invitation to meet characters who feel like us, to spend two hours exploring love, relationships, dating, marriage – and maybe to talk about being human. Photograph: Atsushi Nishijima In a brilliant piece on the romcom that Mindy Kaling wrote for the New Yorker magazine in 2011, the former Office star wrote: 'I regard romantic comedies as a subgenre of sci-fi, in which the world operates according to different rules than my regular human world. For me, there is no difference between Ripley from Alien and any Katherine Heigl character.' With Materialists, Song has cannily evolved the genre away from the unattainable lux interiors that once defined, well, Heigl movies. (No wonder Song has just been tapped to write a sequel to My Best Friend's Wedding, the hit 1990s romcom featuring Julia Roberts and Rupert Everett.) [ 'I'm a woman in my early 30s, and I'm exhausted by dating' Opens in new window ] Despite the presence of Pascal's financier, the characters inhabiting Song's film are transparent about their financial lives: salaries, rents and debts. Evans's John shares a cluttered Brooklyn flat with roommates who steal his phone charger and leave used condoms on the floor. Love will always shrug off capitalism's attempts to colonise it. That's why love is freedom, and why it's always worth it 'Love is the only thing that can't truly be bought,' Song says. 'But capitalism keeps trying to get people to believe that only the wealthy can be in love. Like Jeff Bezos 's insane Venice wedding. The media over-represents romance as something expressed through Cartier necklaces, Birkin bags, private restaurants rented out with a string quartet playing. All reserved for the wealthy. 'It creates the illusion that love is only for people with money. But love is ancient. Just because you're wealthy doesn't mean you can have more of it. You might have better luck in dating, but that doesn't guarantee love. Love will always shrug off capitalism's attempts to colonise it. That's why love is freedom, and why it's always worth it.' Song was born in Seoul, in South Korea, into a family engaged in the arts; her father was a film-maker, and she was named after Juliet Berto's character in Jacques Rivette's knotty nouvelle-vague classic Céline and Julie Go Boating. 'I was always around film,' she says. 'But I had to meet film-making. It was only when I started making my first film that I felt, 'This is where I belong, in cinema. I'm going to do this forever.'' She later moved to New York, where she met her husband, Justin Kuritzkes – screenwriter of Challengers and Queer – and made a splash with the experimental-theatre production Endlings and a 2020 adaptation of Anton Chekhov's The Seagull, constructed live within the video game The Sims 4. 'What I love about theatre is that the writer is the most important person,' she says. 'The writer is the author. And I really got to enjoy being the author.'
