Mother, 47, appears in court accused of murdering her three-year-old daughter
A three-year-old girl's cause of death is yet to be established, a court heard today. Little Hope McGrath was found dead at a house in Austhorpe Court, Leeds, West Yorkshire, on July 30. This morning her mother, Pippa McGrath, 47, appeared by video link from HMP New Hall before Leeds Crown Court charged with the toddler's murder. Half a dozen female friends of McGrath watched the proceedings from the public gallery for the ten minute hearing. McGrath, who had her blonde hair tied back in a pony tail, spoke only to confirm her name and give her date of birth. Recorder of Leeds Guy Kearl KC said: 'A post mortem on Hope has not taken place. It is due to take place tomorrow. 'The heart of the issue will be a toxicology report.' Her barrister Marie Spenwyn told the court that McGrath will be signing consent forms for the prosecution to obtain her medical records. The defence, as well as appointing their own pathologist, will also be engaging a forensic psychiatrist, Dr Bradley Hillier, to assess McGrath's fitness to plead. Miss Spenwyn made no application for bail. Judge Kearl set a trial date for February 24 next year which will be heard by a High Court judge. McGrath, who showed no emotion throughout proceedings, will appear again on September 3 for a pre trial hearing. West Yorkshire Police launched a murder investigation after they received a report at 11.06am on Wednesday, July 30, of concern for the safety of a young child. Detective Chief Inspector Stacey Atkinson, of West Yorkshire Police's Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said: 'Sadly when emergency services attended at an address on Austhorpe Court, Leeds, the body of a three-year-old girl was found inside.' McGrath was also found at her home address and was taken to hospital for 'urgent medical attention'. DCI Atkinson added: 'I understand that such a tragic incident as this will cause shockwaves in the local community and that there will be speculation about what has happened. 'I would ask people to please let us investigate and if you do have any information that you think could assist our enquiries to get in contact with the investigation team.'
