Man, 29, drowns while swimming with fiancée in B.C. lake
A 29-year-old man is missing and presumed drowned after he disappeared while swimming with his fiancée Sunday evening north of Vancouver.
First responders were called to Cypress Provincial Park at approximately 6:30 p.m. after witnesses reportedly saw the Burnaby man struggling to swim in Cabin Lake.
'There were several independent witnesses who saw the young man in distress and observed his companion attempting to assist him,' Sgt. Chris Bigland of the West Vancouver Police Department said in a statement Monday.
'Unfortunately, he slipped beneath the surface of the water and has not been seen since.'
Firefighters and North Shore Rescue volunteers conducted an initial sweep of the lake but had to suspend the search as night fell.
Searchers were expected to return to the area on Monday, along with an RCMP dive team, to locate and recover the man's body, according to the statement.
'This is a complex mission given the location of the scene and the equipment required,' Bigland said. 'We are asking the public to stay away from the area of Cabin Lake in Cypress Mountain Park.'
The victim's family have been notified, and the investigation will be handed over to the B.C. Coroner's Service once the body has been recovered from the lake, according to police.
'The West Vancouver Police Department offer our deepest condolences to the family and thanks the members of the public who assisted on scene,' the statement said.
'Anyone who is struggling with what they witnessed is encouraged to reach out to victim services at 604-925-7468.'

Man burned in explosion, fire at Calgary hotel
Emergency crews respond to an explosion and fire at the Emerald Hotel and Suites on Sunridge Boulevard on Sunday, Aug. 10, 2025. The Calgary Fire Department says one man was rushed to hospital on Sunday after suffering burns in a small explosion and fire. It happened on the fifth floor of the Emerald Hotel and Suites on Sunridge Boulevard just after 8 p.m. The fire department says the victim suffered third-degree burns to 50 per cent of his body. Damage was limited to the room where the explosion occurred. Officials say a dog was also injured, and was taken to an emergency veterinary clinic.

Crown prosecutor stays criminal charges against Whitehorse parent
Social Sharing Criminal charges filed against a Whitehorse parent have been stayed. Kenechukwu Onwudinjo was facing two charges of mischief and two charges of harassment in connection with an incident at Holy Family Elementary School in May 2024, which triggered a hold-and-secure and a police investigation. Onwudinjo was a candidate in the school council election at the time of the incident. Onwudinjo, who was self-represented in court, pleaded not guilty to the charges earlier this year. In an emailed statement to CBC, Onwudinjo said she experienced racial discrimination and bullying within the education system. She said she had a series of disagreements with school administrators that year, partially related to Onwudinjo speaking against rainbow flags being displayed at the Catholic elementary school. She said she filed a complaint to the Yukon Human Rights Commission on May 28. On June 26, the Crown offered to resolve the matter with a common law peace bond, which Onwudinjo rejected. After meeting with "the various stakeholders," it was decided that it was not in the public interest to continue the prosecution, according to Crown prosecutor Ben Brillantes. Brillantes said there are guidelines that inform the decision to pursue charges, including the use of public resources. The Crown could also consider whether the accused may have been subject to systemic discrimination or may have mental health challenges, Brillantes said. "This is not to say that any of these elements were present here, but these are examples of factors for consideration," Brillantes said in an emailed statement. Stayed charges are not permanently dismissed. They remain on the accused person's public record and they can be reinstated by the Crown.
