Hit-and-run driver sought after parked cars damaged in West Vancouver, police say

West Vancouver Police Department cruisers are shown in an undated image. Authorities are searching for a hit-and-run suspect after several parked cars were damaged in West Vancouver last week. The West Vancouver Police Department said officers received multiple reports that a pickup truck driver had struck three parked cars along Bellevue Avenue on Friday night, then fled the scene. Police said they later located a suspect vehicle – a dark blue 2007 Toyota Tacoma with damage to the front passenger side – abandoned in the alley behind West Vancouver Memorial Library. Days later, authorities asked anyone with information on the hit-and-runs to come forward. 'We are particularly interested to hear from the public if they can provide a description or have any other relevant details regarding the driver of the vehicle,' said Sgt. Chris Bigland, in a statement. Investigators are interested in hearing suspect descriptions either 'from when he hit the cars on Bellevue or when he exited his vehicle behind the library,' Bigland said. Police do have a vague description of the suspect as a white, 'heavier set' man who 'appears to be balding.' West Vancouver police asked anyone with further information to contact them at 604-925-7300.

Man, 29, drowns while swimming with fiancée in B.C. lake

Firefighters and North Shore Rescue volunteers conducted an initial sweep of the lake but had to suspend the search as night fell. (North Shore Rescue/Facebook) A 29-year-old man is missing and presumed drowned after he disappeared while swimming with his fiancée Sunday evening north of Vancouver. First responders were called to Cypress Provincial Park at approximately 6:30 p.m. after witnesses reportedly saw the Burnaby man struggling to swim in Cabin Lake. 'There were several independent witnesses who saw the young man in distress and observed his companion attempting to assist him,' Sgt. Chris Bigland of the West Vancouver Police Department said in a statement Monday. 'Unfortunately, he slipped beneath the surface of the water and has not been seen since.' Firefighters and North Shore Rescue volunteers conducted an initial sweep of the lake but had to suspend the search as night fell. Searchers were expected to return to the area on Monday, along with an RCMP dive team, to locate and recover the man's body, according to the statement. 'This is a complex mission given the location of the scene and the equipment required,' Bigland said. 'We are asking the public to stay away from the area of Cabin Lake in Cypress Mountain Park.'
