27-year prison sentence: PTI MNA Latif claims ruling as bogus terrorism conviction
ISLAMABAD: The firebrand Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) MNA from Chitral Abdul Latif, who was handed down a 27-year prison sentence on Friday, claimed he was given a bogus terrorism conviction after refusing a jaw-dropping Rs2 billion bribe to back the controversial 26th Constitutional Amendment.
A diehard loyalist of jailed ex-prime minister Imran Khan, Latif slammed the ruling as revenge by what he called the 'installed regime of Form 47 and its handlers, who are pulling the strings of the puppet Shehbaz Sharif regime.'
An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Islamabad convicted Latif over his alleged role in the chaotic May 9 riots – when PTI supporters allegedly stormed police stations and government buildings. But Latif insisted the charges were bogus, calling it a false flag set up by the powers that be.
Latifinsisted that he didnot even know the police station he is accused of attacking existed. 'I hadn't even heard of the Ramna Police Station until I was falsely accused,' Latif said in a defiant video message following the ATC verdict. 'Just because I support Imran Khan, they threw me into this mess.'
The court's decision came down hard – 27 years for allegedly leading the charge on the Ramna PS during the nationwide unrest.
But Latif, unbowed, said the real crime was his refusal to accept a massive payoff to support the controversial 26th Amendment – a move that he insisted would have betrayed his party and Khan's ideology.
'There is also a court of Allah, where no police, no pressure works,' he said, taking a fiery swipe at the lower judiciary. 'Justice will ultimately be served.'
Latif remained hopeful that the higher judiciary of the country will toss out what he called a 'politically motivated and unjust' ruling. He insisted he would never sell out, no matter the price – or the prison sentence.
'No conviction, no bribe can shake my conscience,' he declared. 'I've stood by Imran Khan for 28 years – and I'm not backing down now nor will I ever in future.'

Advisor highlights agri output decline
PESHAWAR: Advisor to the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Finance and Inter-Provincial Coordination, Muzzammil Aslam stated that according to the federal government, there has been a 15% decline in the production of major crops, which includes a 30% decline in cotton production alone. As a result, an additional five billion dollars will need to be spent on cotton imports. Similarly, due to the drop in wheat production, 3 billion dollars will be spent on wheat imports. Overall, the decrease in agricultural output will force Pakistan to import goods worth $10 billion, representing a loss of Rs2,800 billion to the country and its farmers. He said the government had claimed that the inflation rate was 4.5% or 4.7%, but it is now admitting that inflation will rise to 7.5% next year. Muzzammil Aslam noted that Pakistan's GDP this year was Rs114 trillion, and next year it's expected to increase to Rs129 trillion. Despite this, only Rs1 trillion has been allocated for development expenditures and the federal government is not launching any new projects. Likewise, no new projects have been allocated to the provinces. Of the Rs1 trillion development budget, Rs120 billion is from savings that were not provided as fuel subsidies, which are being used to build roads in Balochistan. This means that the actual Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) is only Rs880 billion. He further stated that under the 'Uraan Pakistan' programme, discussions were held on sports, water, and the environment, and Rs65 billion was initially allocated to higher education. This has now been slashed to Rs45 billion without any consultation with the provinces. Muzzammil Aslam pointed out that the government had earlier said that projects which are more than 75% complete would be prioritized, yet two road projects in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa that were over 90% complete have been deleted, which he called a clear injustice and raised during today's meeting. He questioned, 'If the government claims inflation is being brought down to 1%, why is the interest rate still at 11%.' He said that Rs2 to 2.5 trillion in savings from interest payments this year should be redirected to development projects but it is not happening. He said that according to the Planning Ministry, 118 development projects have been scrapped, while the government is claiming that the growth rate will be 4.2% next year, with inflation at 7.5%. Rs10bn defamation case against IK put off
LAHORE: A sessions court adjourned the proceedings in the Rs 10 billion defamation case of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif after the lawyer of former PTI chairman Imran Khan did not conclude cross-examination of Shehbaz Sharif. Earlier Shahbaz Sharif and his counsel appeared before the court through via a video link. Responding to the questions of Imran Khan, the prime minister clarified that he considers himself a public servant which is why he used the term 'public service' in first paragraph of his affidavit. He rejected the allegation that every word of his affidavit was false or that the affidavit itself was untrue. He also rejected an allegation that the charges leveled against Imran Khan in his affidavit were false. PM Shehbaz also told the court that he did not remember if the Supreme Court issued its verdict in the Panama Papers case on April 20, 2017. To another query of the defendant's counsel, he said it was incorrect to suggest that he filed the defamation suit against the PTI former chairman after the Supreme Court's decision in the Panama Papers case. Shehbaz also rejected a claim that he did not attach a receipt of sending a legal notice to the defendant before filing the suit. He stated that it was also untrue that no notice was served to the defendant prior to filing the suit. In his defamation suit filed in 2017, Shehbaz said Imran Khan leveled baseless allegations on him.
