Kolkata team bats for sustainability at Eden Gardens
In a season where boundaries weren't the only things being smashed, the Kolkata-based T20 team has scored a major environmental win off the field. During their home matches at Eden Gardens this season, the team diverted 84.9% of stadium waste away from landfills — setting a benchmark for sustainability in sports.
Stadiums, often associated with large crowds and even larger waste volumes, became unlikely sites for positive change this season. Through a carefully designed waste management programme across seven home matches, the team and its partners showed how sport can be a springboard for environmental consciousness and community action.
Over 35,000 kg of waste managed
Between the first five home games, over 35,113 kilograms of waste were kept out of landfills thanks to segregation, recycling, composting, and donation efforts.
A total of 200 waste bins were installed across the stadium to encourage fans to separate waste at the source. Volunteers and a dedicated 'Green Team' assisted spectators and kept the stands litter-free.
The programme also included training sessions for food stall vendors and catering staff to ensure proper sorting of materials like paper, plastic, aluminium foil, and food scraps. A waste sorting team managed over ten categories of waste, all of which were sent to local recycling or composting units.

The initiative was supported by strong anti-litter messaging, visual campaigns, and consistent on-ground engagement to promote responsible fan behaviour.
"A platform for change"
Speaking about the initiative, team co-owner Juhi Chawla said,
'Cricket has the power to unite and inspire, and we believe it's also a powerful platform to promote sustainability. It's not just about cheering for our team—it's about coming together to protect the planet we all share.'
The team also acknowledged the contributions of volunteers, on-ground partners, waste workers, and fans in making the campaign a success.
Earlier this season, under the team's broader 'Runs to Roots' campaign, they introduced eco-friendly jersey packaging made from biodegradable materials — a step that further reinforced their commitment to sustainability.
By combining high-stakes cricket with low-impact living, Kolkata's home team is setting an example that other franchises — across sports — might just follow.

'He's that good': Shreyas Iyer backed to lead India in multiple formats as MI bow out of IPL 2025
Shreyas Iyer has entered the history books by becoming the first-ever captain in IPL history to take three franchises to the finals. The 30-year-old led the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their first IPL title in a decade and had previously led the Delhi Capitals to the IPL 2020 Finals. With Iyer being among the only eight captains who have won an IPL trophy and on the way to winning another silverware, the chorus for handing him more responsibility within the Indian team has also started to grow. Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa has predicted that Shreyas Iyer will captain Team India in multiple formats. Notably, the Indian team currently has three different captains across the formats: Suryakumar Yadav leads the charge in T20Is, Shubman Gill is at the helm of the Test team, and Rohit Sharma captains the ODIs. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Uthappa wrote, 'I've said this time and again and I'll say it AGAIN!! Iyer will captain India in multiple formats!! He has to!! He's that good!! 🫡🫠' While there may not be any captaincy spot open for Iyer to take over in the Indian team at the moment, the Mumbai-based batter will likely be taking inspiration from Rohit Sharma. Sharma led Mumbai Indians (MI) to five IPL trophies from 2013 to 2020, all the while the Indian team was either led by MS Dhoni or Virat Kohli. Finally, when the opportunity arose to lead Team India after Virat Kohli stepped down, Rohit Sharma took it with both hands and has since led the team to two ICC trophies: the T20 World Cup 2024 and the Champions Trophy 2025. In the meantime, Iyer's performances with the bat are making it more and more unlikely that the BCCI would be able to ignore him for long in either T20Is or the Test format.

RCB's IPL records at Narendra Modi Stadium: How have Bengaluru performed in Ahmedabad? Complete details
The 18th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 will have a new champion when Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) square off at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday (June 3). RCB have made it to their fourth IPL final, while Punjab Kings secured their second appearance in the title clash with a thrilling victory over a spirited Mumbai Indians (MI) in IPL 2025 Qualifier 2 on June 1. RCB have been dominant in IPL 2025 under new captain Rajat Patidar. While Virat Kohli and Phil Salt have handled things at the top, other players have also contributed to securing their fourth IPL final berth. Opposition Result Year Rajasthan Royals Won 2015 Delhi Capitals Won 2021 Punjab Kings Lost 2021 Rajasthan Royals Lost 2022 Gujarat Titans Won 2024 Rajasthan Royals Lost 2024 However, the Bengaluru-based franchise had a mixed bag at the world's largest cricket stadium, with a 3-3 win-loss record in six matches in the last 10 years. RCB first played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in 2015 before returning again at the venue six years later. What is more concerning for RCB is the fact that they were able to win just one match in the last four outings at the venue. While RCB's past numbers do not favour them in Ahmedabad, their current form speaks volumes with an ability to turn the tables when it matters the most. RCB have played three IPL finals before, losing on all three occasions in 2009 (lost to Deccan Chargers), 2011 (lost to Chennai Super Kings) and 2016 (lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad). RCB will be hoping to be fourth-time lucky on Tuesday. Stay updated on all the action from the IPL 2025.
