Don't compare Malaysia with ‘real tigers', Zaid tells Wan Fayhsal

PETALING JAYA: Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim today responded to the claim by a Bersatu man that Malaysia could still achieve 'Asian Tiger' status if led by a visionary prime minister, saying the country could not be compared with 'real tigers' such as China, South Korea, or Singapore. Bersatu Supreme Council member Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal had said in an exclusive interview with FMT that such a prime minister should have the 'vision to rally all Malaysians transcending race and religion'. However, Zaid said that Wan Fayhsal should 'stop dreaming'. In a post on X, he said even Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, whom he had previously thought to be a visionary, was unwilling to dismantle current policies. 'Stop comparing us with the real tigers. Our politicians and civil service are not the best, and our education and economic policies are archaic. The corrupt and rent seekers are protected. 'We give preferences to selected groups, but they are not to be questioned. 'We are a feudal oligarchy cemented by a religious bureaucracy the Renaissance man himself dared not recalibrate and reform,' he said in what was believed to be a veiled reference to Anwar. The term 'Asian Tigers' was used in the 1980s and 1990s to describe the fast-growing, now high-income economies of Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore and Hong Kong. Malaysia was tipped to be the fifth 'Asian Tiger', but its economic growth was derailed by the 1997 Asian financial crisis. Wan Fayhsal nevertheless said Malaysia checked all the boxes to achieve high-income status, pointing to its strategic location at the heart of Asean, its relative immunity to major natural disasters, and its diverse cultures and traditions. Razali warns youth against 'two-minute professors' online

Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) Secretary-General Datuk Razali Razi ( pic ) said many such individuals exploit social media for income despite lacking grassroots involvement or policy knowledge. Advertisement Razali, a lawyer, revealed that the party is considering legal action against certain online commentators whom he accused of spreading misinformation for clout. He urged the public to evaluate online content critically and avoid being misled by short, provocative videos containing hateful or false narratives. No need to audit Petronas, Umno Youth told
Zaid Ibrahim told Umno Youth that conducting a financial audit of Petronas is unnecessary and will only divert attention from more critical matters affecting the national oil company. PETALING JAYA : Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim has dismissed calls by Umno Youth for the government to audit Petronas's financial results, urging the wing instead to concentrate on more pressing issues affecting the national oil company and the country's long-term energy strategy. Zaid said unless there is a clear and specific concern that justifies an audit, such a move is unnecessary and risks diverting attention from more critical matters. 'What you should be worried about is this: were you told about the deal struck between the Madani government and Sarawak on the Petronas-Petros dispute? 'Was the settlement fair to Petronas, and was it made in the (nation's best) interest?' he said in a post on X. Zaid also questioned the government's continued reliance on Petronas for national revenue, warning that it may be draining the company to the point where it can no longer compete effectively in the global energy market. 'You (Umno Youth) should be asking whether the government has a serious plan to diversify its revenue sources beyond Petronas.' He also raised concerns about whether Petronas still attracts leaders with the strategic foresight and competence of past technocrats such as Idris Jala and Hassan Marican, or even former prime minister Najib Razak, who once served the company as a junior executive. Umno Youth yesterday called on the government to provide a full audit and transparent report on Petronas's actual financial position to the public after its decision to cut 10% of its workforce due to falling crude prices. Its chief, Dr Akmal Saleh, said that as a wholly government-owned entity, any drastic decision affecting thousands of employees should not be made without proper checks and balances. Petronas said at least 5,000 staff (mostly contract workers) would be affected by the move.
