‘How To Train Your Dragon' Won't Be Laggin' At Summer Box Office With $175M-$185M Global Start For Live-Action Redo

Yahooa day ago

Domestic box office estimates for this week's opening of the live-action adaptation of Universal/DreamWorks Animation's How to Train Your Dragon are between $65 million-$75 million-plus at 4,000 theaters, and don't be shocked if this beloved title overperforms.
This isn't Gus Van Sant's take on Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, meaning a shot-for-shot version of the original 2010 movie — and that's even with original HTTYD architect Dean DeBlois behind the camera. There's a lot of heart and there's a lot of flying swoops that set this live-action reboot apart (even if Toothless the Dragon looks similar to his animated version), not to mention Mason Thames and Nico Parker's respective turns as Hiccup and Astrid; the duo take entire ownership of the characters. No carbon copies here.

Critics on Rotten Tomatoes are 81% fresh; the original animated movie was 99% certified fresh. HTTYD will have all the firepower of PLFs, 4DX, ScreenX and the entire Imax network of 413 screens.
Estimates for the full international opening through Sunday point to the $110M range, with room for upside. That takes the global start for the movie produced by Marc Platt, Adam Siegel and DeBlois to $175M-$185M. The international take includes offshore previews, which will roll up into that number. Through Monday, the previews estimate is $21.8M (see more detail below). HTTYD started significant overseas previews last weekend and begins official rollout Wednesday, with all international box office markets in the mix through Friday save Japan which flies in September 5.
How to Train Your Dragon is rated PG for kissing. The movie before P&A cost $150M net, shot with tax credits in Ireland.
Stateside previews for How to Train Your Dragon start 2 p.m. Thursday. There's some question as to how hard the fourth weekend of will eat into Toothless' take, with the former live-action take of the Disney toon expected to do around $20M in the U.S. and Canada, off 38% week over week. The notion as of this minute is that there's room for both adaptations of these beloved feature toons.
Lilo & Stitch made $3.6M in its third Monday, with a running cume of $339.2M. HTTYD is big in unaided awareness and first choice with women under 25, through currently pacing behind Lilo & Stitch at the same point in time before its opening.
In February, How to Train Your Dragon's Super Bowl spot amassed north of 370M global views on YouTube and yielded the most online engagement of any trailer shown during the game. The official trailer dropped February 12, when it also trended on YouTube and played on such movies as Captain America: Brave New World, A Minecraft Movie and Thunderbolts*. HTTYD trailers to date have clocked three quarters of a billion views to date. Note that HTTYD has no significant holidays ahead overseas, but European majors love the previous animated movies as does Latin America, especially Brazil and Mexico. Korea and Australia also have a sweet spot for Toothless. The property is well known in China, where the 2014 and 2019 films released (grossing a combined $120M at historical rates). As per the norm in recent times, the market is uncertain, but the film is leading presales on Friday and Saturday. There are popular HTTYD-themed attractions at the Universal Beijing Resort including a character meet-and-greet and an 'Untrainable' show.In terms of overall comps, it's not cut-and-dried. If we look at animation to live-action transfers, we're pretty much in Disney-only territory which is a different beast based on the historical nature of those IPs. Meanwhile, it's not apples-to-apples to comp the HTTYD toons to a flesh-and-blood update. And yet, looking at the previews, we can extrapolate overall good news. Direct comps are again ornery since the sneaks include varied amounts of screenings and non-traditional opening days. Still, here's a sample of what's transpired with HTTYD's early previews overseas: Korea began previews June 6, reaching $4.3M after four days and leading each day, playing across 1,644 screens, including 26 Imax. It has a fantastic 99% CVG Egg score. UK & Ireland kicked off previews Monday, grossing $1.2M across 1,600 screens (54 in Imax) and at No. 1 on the day with a 41% market share. Germany on Monday grossed $1.1M in previews across 1,075 screens. France has grossed $1.4M in previews through two days. Across all of Latin America, HTTYD opened in 1,681 locations. Hiccup's jump-start in Brazil is $2.7M. Mexico grossed $2.1M in Saturday-Sunday previews this past weekend across 812 screens.Of the nearly $1.7B overall that the animated franchise has grossed, $1.1B comes from international.
There's another wide entry and that's A24's Materialists from Oscar nominee Celine Song, which currently counts 89% certified fresh with critics on RT. The outlook is $7M-$8M for the feature, which cost around $20M. You want more romantic comedies? You want more movies for women? Well, then here's an original starring Dakota Johnson as an upscale matchmaker torn between the wealthy unicorn guy, played by Pedro Pascal, and the poor b.f. with a heart of gold, played by Chris Evans. Sony bought foreign on Materialists.
Unaided awareness and first choice is best with women over 25, and just a point behind in each category from Anyone But You. Let's see where this one goes as it's a crowd-pleaser with a lot of quotable lines and an ending that will keep women and men debating well after they leave the theater. Materialists is rated R for hanky panky with Pedro. Previews begin at 1 p.m. Thursday.
Lionsgate's second weekend of From the World of John Wick: Ballerina is looking to be around $11M, off 55%. On Monday, the Len Wiseman-directed movie did $2.05M, taking the running total on the Thunder Road production to $26.5M.

John Mulaney condemns threats against family after Olivia Munn's Ms. Rachel comments

John Mulaney condemns threats against family after Olivia Munn's Ms. Rachel comments Show Caption Hide Caption Olivia Munn rejected seven-figure-offer after 'traumatic' on-set incident During an appearance on Monica Lewinsky's 'Reclaiming' podcast, Olivia Munn revealed that she rejected a seven-figure offer to sign an NDA after a 'traumatic' on-set incident. unbranded - Entertainment John Mulaney is speaking out against violent threats directed at his family. The comedian, 42, said in an Instagram story on Wednesday, June 11, that his wife, Olivia Munn, and their kids have been receiving "violent and threatening" comments and messages because she made an "innocent comment" about "what children's programs we like," which has "somehow — unbelievably — been conflated with not caring about the deaths of children in Gaza." Munn recently sparked backlash after she told People magazine she doesn't allow her children to watch YouTube star Ms. Rachel. Ms. Rachel, whose real name is Rachel Griffin Accurso, has been outspoken in her advocacy for Palestinian children, though Munn made no mention of this in the interview. "This is absolutely insane and needs to stop," Mulaney wrote. "The people doing this are so wildly out of line and so unhelpful to any conversation. You took a nothing comment to a dark and dangerous place. This kind of behavior isn't activism." In the original People article, which is no longer available on the magazine's website, Munn said that while "I know kids love (Ms. Rachel)," the "thing is, if I can't watch it, I'm not going to spend the rest of my life going crazy." She added, "These kid shows drive me crazy." Munn also said that "Blue's Clues" is not allowed in her house, either, and that she "can't take" children's cartoons. Ms. Rachel defends advocacy for Palestinian children amid backlash: 'It's sad' Accurso reacted to the comments on Instagram by asking, "WHO CARES?!" She shared screenshots from two Instagram posts about Munn's statements and questioned why media outlets were focusing on this instead of Accurso's advocacy for children in Gaza. "I'd rather you cover me advocating for kids in Gaza who are literally starving, largest cohort of child amputees in modern history, thousands & thousands killed — no medical care, no education, no homes… do better!!!" she wrote, clarifying she doesn't "care that (Munn) doesn't want to watch the show" and sends "all my love to her and her family." Celebrities tell all about aging, marriage and Beyoncé in these 10 bingeable memoirs In a statement posted on Instagram on June 12, Accurso urged her followers to "please be kind" to Munn and her family and condemned "hate, attacks or hurtful comments." She said that her callout of the People article wasn't about Munn but rather about being frustrated with seeing "stories that don't matter" while "children's immeasurable suffering is being ignored." The YouTube star also revealed she has been in touch with Munn. "I know some outlets would love to cover a feud between two women, but guess what? That doesn't exist," she said. "Her and I have been in touch and we are both choosing kindness." In a since-expired Instagram story, Munn wrote that her "comments were never meant to diminish the joy, comfort, and impact (Ms. Rachel) brings to so many families," according to Entertainment Weekly. "Every parent understands the importance of finding meaningful programming that helps us connect with our kids. I don't want something taken out of context to be a moment that steals even a minute of joy for anyone."

‘How to Train Your Dragon' hiccups into live action

So, Toothless returns to the screen just in time for the 15th anniversary of his first appearance. And this time, he's interacting with entire actors rather than just their voices. One of those voices, Gerard Butler, reprises his role as dragon-hating Viking chieftain, Stoick. Also on board is Dean DeBlois, who co-wrote and co-directed the original film with Chris Sanders. DeBlois also directed the sequels, and wrote and directed this one. Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up Night Fury dragon, Toothless in Universal Pictures' live-action 'How to Train Your Dragon.' (Universal Pictures) Universal Pictures Advertisement He also co-wrote and co-directed (with Sanders) the original 'Lilo and Stitch.' The Nostalgia is also pure evil, at least where current cinema is concerned. Creativity has become increasingly stifled. I'm constantly telling you that, regardless of quality, these remakes are unnecessary and cynical cash grabs. Plus, a studio best not tinker too much with the plot or the look of the movie it's remaking, or there will be blood. Just look at the Advertisement Toothless stans will have no such complaints with 'How to Train Your Dragon.' Despite being 30 minutes longer than its source material, this is almost a shot-for-shot recreation. Toothless makes a seamless transition as well. He still has the big, expressive eyes and endearing yet oddly shaped head. He also has the broken tail that will be a major plot point. Night Fury dragon, Toothless, and Hiccup (Mason Thames) in Universal Pictures' live-action 'How to Train Your Dragon.' (Universal Pictures) Universal Pictures The outdoor cinematography by Bill Pope ('The Matrix') is gorgeous, capturing the ragged cliffs and vast waters of Berk, the Viking town where Stoick and his son, Hiccup (Mason Thames), live. However, the opening battle between human and dragon is woefully underlit. The flying scenes, while occasionally thrilling and always vertiginous (especially in IMAX), worked better in the animated version. The plot remains the same here. Dragons and Vikings have been mortal enemies for generations. Fiery battles are common every season, with people like Gobber (Nick Frost) losing limbs or getting scarred during run-ins with the beasts. According to the townsfolk, Hiccup is a screw-up who will never become the great fighter and leader his father is. Deemed weak, he's relegated to building contraptions as Gobber's blacksmith apprentice. But during one Viking raid on the dragons, Hiccup thinks he's struck a Night Fury dragon with a gigantic bola. Of course, no one believes him, and he doubts himself until he finds an injured Toothless. Rather than fry him to a crisp, Toothless spares Hiccup and the two form a friendship. The apprentice builds a prosthetic tail for his scaly buddy to help him fly again. As a thank you, Toothless flies Hiccup all over the countryside. Advertisement Mason Thames in 'How To Train Your Dragon.' (Universal Pictures) Universal Pictures Since no Viking has ever attempted to understand dragons, let alone ride one, Hiccup's newfound, nonviolent knowledge of the creatures helps him in the mandatory Dragonslayer sessions everyone expected him to fail. This stokes the ire of Astrid (Nico Parker), the presumed best student in the class. Hiccup's impressive success also makes him a celebrity among his peers. These are teens with names like Snotlout (Gabriel Howell), Ruffnut (Bronwyn James), and Tuffnut (Harry Trevaldwyn). They more or less resemble their animated counterparts, both in attitude and appearance. As with most movies about fathers and sons, Stoick finds himself at odds with his kid. He treats Hiccup like damaged goods, especially when he discovers his progeny would rather befriend dragons than behead them. Of the human actors, Butler is most successful at bringing his character to life. 13toothless - Gerard Butler as Stoick in Universal Pictures' live-action 'How to Train Your Dragon.' (Helen Sloane/Universal Pictures) Helen Sloane/Universal Pictures Perhaps his history of voicing Stoick gave Butler a full understanding of the man, and that translates very well to this iteration. He brings a jovial humor to his scenes with Frost (who is also good here) and has a few moments that are surprisingly moving. One of the lines I'm glad the new film kept was Hiccup's explanation that he saw himself in Toothless, that they were both 'broken.' Though his line readings are not as snarky as Jay Baruchel, who originated the role, Thames convinces us of the emotional bond he has with Toothless. I'm on the fence here. I enjoyed the animated version of this movie quite a bit, so I'm torn between being happy this film was nowhere near as bad as I'd expected, and being frustrated that I sat through a carbon copy. Your enjoyment will depend on whether your Toothless nostalgia has a full set of teeth. Advertisement ★★1/2 HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON Written and directed by Dean DeBlois.
