Communications Ministry brings safe internet campaign tour to Northern Zone
LANGKAWI: The Ministry of Communications, through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), has brought the Safe Internet Campaign Tour to schools in the Northern Zone as part of efforts to strengthen online safety and build a resilient digital community.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Ulu Melaka here is the starting point of the tour for the Northern Zone, which will subsequently be expanded to other schools in the region.
'We are starting at SK Ulu Melaka but will later move on to 21 primary schools and seven secondary schools throughout the Langkawi district.
'The intention is to deliver the message especially to primary school students to avoid using social media and to raise awareness among parents about the benefits and dangers of social media and the internet,' he told reporters after launching the Northern Zone Safe Internet Campaign Tour here today.
Also present were the Ministry of Communications Secretary-General Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, MCMC Commissioner General (Rtd) Tan Sri Zulkifeli Mohd Zin, and Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin.
Fahmi said the tour will be expanded to other zones after this, with the goal of reaching the over 10,200 schools nationwide by the end of this year.
'It's not an easy task, but I have asked MCMC to leverage its network with NADI ((National Information Dissemination Centres). We have 1,099 NADI centres across the country and 1,878 MADANI Community groups under the Information Department nationwide.
We also aim to collaborate with Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs)... and with Student Representative Councils at public institutions of higher learning to help reach out to schools as a start,' he said.
More than 1,800 participants, including students from 22 schools, teachers, parents, community leaders and representatives from various relevant agencies took part in the programme today.
The campaign is a continuation of efforts to enhance digital literacy among the public, especially children and teenagers, in facing challenges such as cyberbullying, online scams, cyber gambling and child sexual exploitation.
Throughout this year, over 100,000 participants across the northern zone comprising Perlis, Kedah, Penang and Perak are expected to be involved in the campaign.
Previously, SK Bidor 2 in Tapah, Perak was the first location for the implementation of the campaign, which was launched on April 10.

Aidiladha sacrificial rite strengthens community ties, says Fahmi
KUALA LUMPUR: The Aidiladha sacrificial rite not only fulfils religious obligations but also serves as a means to strengthen ties among the people and government agencies, says Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. The Communications Minister said the practice highlights the spirit of unity and reinforces bonds among people from various backgrounds. A total of 13 cows were sacrificed, contributed by RTM staff and members of the mosque's committee, including one from Fahmi himself for the programme. Fahmi, who is also the Member of Parliament for Lembah Pantai, said his parliamentary office had distributed 76 sacrificial cows to residents in the constituency. "Outside Lembah Pantai, another five cows were sacrificed through the efforts of our team. Alhamdulillah, this reflects the strong cooperation within the community,' he said. He also reaffirmed his commitment to supporting similar programmes in the future, as they have proven effective in fostering unity among the people. "Even when I was just an MP previously, I took part in sacrificial rites here several times. I find it very meaningful and worth continuing, as it truly strengthens community ties,' he said. Meanwhile, Masjid Muhammadi Angkasapuri chairman Datuk Mohamed Irwan Mansor said more than 200 individuals participated in the mosque's sacrificial event. "Alhamdulillah, the sacrificial rites were successfully carried out with the involvement of people from all walks of life, including youth, women and children who added to the festive atmosphere,' he said. The event also included the distribution of sacrificial meat to asnaf groups in the Angkasapuri area, identified by the mosque committee. "Distribution coupons were given out earlier to eligible recipients, and the meat will be handed over once the cutting process is completed,' he said. He added that the annual programme not only strengthens bonds among staff and the local community but also provides direct benefits to those in need.- Bernama

Fahmi, Azalina to collaborate on tightening social media regulation
KUALA LUMPUR, June 4 — Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has expressed his readiness to hold further discussions with Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, to strengthen the regulation of social media platforms in Malaysia. Fahmi said the meeting is vital following Azalina's recent proposal to amend existing laws, including requiring parents and guardians to monitor their children's online behaviour and participate in digital safety awareness and education programmes. He said that these measures will take into account the experience and approaches of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Ministry of Communications in handling various issues related to digital platforms and social media in the country. 'I will be meeting Datuk Seri Azalina to explore possible ways, based on MCMC's and the Ministry's experience dealing with social media platforms, on what we can do,' Fahmi told reporters after the Hawana 2025-Bernama Strategic Partners' Appreciation Ceremony and Official Launch of Bernama Motorhome at Wisma Bernama here yesterday. Present were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, as well as Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, who is also Hawana 2025 project director. Elaborating, Fahmi said that the Online Safety Act (OnSA) 2024, which is set to be enforced soon, will grant MCMC the authority to take action against social media platforms that fail to fulfil their obligations.
