Farah Khan's guide to parenting is tough love

Express Tribune07-03-2025
Speaking on her YouTube show, Bollywood film director Farah Khan told Indian actor Rubina Dilaik that she uses tough love to parent her triplets. "I am a strict mom; they just can't go wherever they want without me tracking them. Every evening, we have a gossip chat. I say gossip so that I get to know what is going on in their lives. Even though I am strict, that way, I am a cool and fun mom," Farah said.
The Om Shanti Om director was blessed with son Czar and daughters Anya and Diva in February 2008. "My three kids will go to college next year; they have turned seventeen. Luckily, they are not overgrown. Recently, they celebrated their birthday, and they wanted to have a family dinner with us rather than go to a club and party," she said.
Farah prefers that her children invest their time in productive pursuits. "My daughters have never been to a club, and till now, they don't use makeup, nor have they gotten their eyebrows or anything done; they are only engrossed in studies," she said.
Although uncompromising over the upbringing of all her kids, the 60-year-old director is particularly strict with her son. "Their upbringing is the same; I am a little more strict with my son, though. Especially now, I have to explain to him how to speak to girls, how he cannot say things, and also how his friends cannot talk about his sisters in a certain way. And if they talk about any girls, he is not to be included."
Despite her firm methods, Farah considers herself lucky to be blessed with the three. "When I was expecting, I always prayed for two boys and one girl. Luckily, God didn't listen to me and gave me two girls. They are the best," she said.
Farah and filmmaker-husband Shirish Kunder celebrated their kids' birthday in a homely event last month. Sharing chronologically assembled photos of the three on Instagram, their mother wished them a happy birthday and promised that their late grandmother was looking over them, no matter where she might be.
Unapologetic about posting the triplets' childhood photos, Farah added, "I know you'll be embarrassed by this reel, but as an Indian mom, it's my sworn duty to embarrass my kids. That's how we show our love."

For Marina Khan, the magic lies in a little secrecy

Veteran actor and director Marina Khan has witnessed the evolution of stardom in Pakistan - from the tightly curated celebrity culture of the 1980s PTV era to the always-online personas of today's social media stars. Her breakout roles in dramas such as Tanhaiyaan and Dhoop Kinare catapulted her to nationwide fame early in her career. Speaking on a recent episode of Excuse Me with Ahmad Ali Butt, Khan discussed how the dynamics of fame have shifted over the decades. "Back then, there was an air of mystery around actors. You'd only know what we were up to if you happened to see us in public," she said. "Now, celebrities share every moment of their lives with their fans. It makes them appear more human, I think." Stardom and secrecy The actor observed how fans interact with celebrities now, 'On Instagram, fans intensely follow the moves of these young stars. They love to know what they ate and where they went. Additionally, they are crazy about seeing you in person too.' She thinks that stardom flourishes both online and in person, 'It is kind of merged now. I guess it's because even on Instagram, they are seeing you through a filter. So there is still some hype around in-person interactions.' Khan was also asked, 'Where do you think an artist's personal life begins and their work ends?' To which she responded by saying, 'A lot of young people today have grown up with the internet. They're already used to sharing their lives on social media, so for them, the personal and professional often overlap quite naturally.' Circling back to whether they should share less or not, Khan said, 'The younger generation is not really losing anything by over-sharing on social media. I don't think either one is better than the other. People were crazy about us during the PTV era and people intensely follow the celebrities of this time too. Every time these young celebrities visit malls for promotion, massive crowds show up.' Personally, the actor maintained, 'That being said, I think an actor should maintain an air of secrecy around them.' Early fame Recalling her days of shooting, the actor added, 'On PTV, when we booked a quarter, no one was allowed to book the one next to us. That was because no one was supposed to know what we were up to. There was the notion that there should be a desire to see someone. Otherwise, if they constantly appear, they might lose their charm.' Sharing an anecdote from the time Dhoop Kinare was hot on air, the actor recalled an incident when she accompanied Shehnaz Sheikh and a few others to a cricket match in Sharjah. 'All of a sudden all the car windows went pitch black. People had surrounded our car from all four sides. That was when it actually hit me, 'Wow, I'm famous now'.' Khan also reflected on what life was like before Tanhaiyan aired: 'Most of my co-stars had already done hit TV dramas by that time. The night before the first episode went on air, Behroze Sabzwari came up to me and joked, 'Your life is about to change tomorrow, just get ready for it.' I laughed it off and didn't take him seriously. Little did I know!' Meanwhile, Butt couldn't help but gush over the influence Marina had on him in his youth: 'All the boys in my school had a huge crush on you. Your short hair was iconic. Please take this as a compliment when I say this; you were the Hania Aamir of your time! You were the face of the youth.' Khan graciously accepted the compliment, responding: 'It is a compliment. I have played her mother three times, so it is fair to call her my younger version. Hania is very cute too.' When Butt observed that Khan now seemed somewhat shy in the public eye, the actor clarified: 'No, I didn't become shy. I just woke up one day and realised I didn't enjoy acting as much. When the TV industry got privatised I ended up disagreeing with the way things were happening. I gravitated more towards direction then. That's probably why I moved out of the spotlight and you don't see me as much now.'

Alizeh Shah continues to call out mistreatment in the Pakistani TV industry

Actor Alizeh Shah took to Instagram this week to share a deeply personal and emotional account of her experiences in the Pakistani entertainment industry. Framing it as her final attempt to reclaim her narrative, the Ehd-e-Wafa star opened up about years of harassment, exploitation, media ridicule, and what she describes as a toxic, patriarchal culture that repeatedly tried to silence her. 'I'm going to expose every single person who did me wrong,' Shah declared in a series of video stories. 'I'm done with people trolling me, making fun of me, and making memes out of me. You guys have no idea how difficult an actor's life already is.' Her testimony comes amid renewed online scrutiny following the resurfacing of a 2022 interview with senior actor Yasir Nawaz. Nawaz described Shah as difficult to work with and claimed he would never collaborate with her again. His comment reignited public criticism and triggered a wave of trolling that, according to Shah, significantly contributed to her retreat from the spotlight. While Shah did not name Nawaz directly, the timing and tone of her stories clearly suggest that her comments are, at least in part, a response to the narrative that interviews like these helped fuel. Revisiting the 2021 ramp fall: 'It wasn't an accident' Among the most emotionally charged moments in Shah's video was her retelling of the now-infamous ramp fall at Bridal Couture Week in 2021. In a viral clip, Shah is seen stumbling while walking alongside playback singer Shazia Manzoor. At the time, she had dismissed the incident as an unfortunate mistake, even thanking Manzoor for her support. Now, however, Shah claims the stumble was no accident. 'We had to go right. This lady pulled me and dragged me on the floor,' she said, replaying the clip to support her claim. She further alleged that Manzoor had inappropriately touched her throughout the walk and made calculated attempts to cause her fall. What hurt even more, Shah said, was how the incident became a punchline in the industry. She called out host Juggan Kazim and influencer Jannat Mirza for publicly mocking her by recreating the moment. Clips she shared showed both Kazim and Mirza laughing and reenacting the fall on camera. Shah said she chose to stay silent at the time to maintain professionalism, but now admits the betrayal and public ridicule deeply wounded her. The 2023 incident: 'It took me years to heal from that lie' Shah also addressed a separate incident that grabbed headlines in 2023 - when she was accused of assaulting a fellow actor and throwing a lit cigarette at her. Shah says the truth was distorted beyond recognition. 'She pushed me. I didn't fall. And then she slapped me. I was in shock,' Shah recalled. 'She started telling everyone that I threw a cigarette at her.' Shah says she asked the crew to replay the footage since cameras were rolling - but no such incident was captured. In frustration, she admits she threw a sandal at the actor, but denied all other claims. She was discouraged from filing a police report, as it could delay or damage the production. The next day, she says, she woke up to headlines branding her violent and unprofessional. To support her account, Shah has now shared an old interview of actor Sami Khan, in which he confirmed witnessing the slap during the shoot. 'I stayed quiet at that time because I was weak. It took so much time for me to heal from this lie and speak up,' Shah wrote. Youtube: SaharxSupremacy (via @alizehshah Instagram) Shah accuses industry insiders of punishing her for setting boundaries A major portion of Shah's video focused on the exploitative practices within the entertainment industry. She spoke of delayed payments, disrespect on sets, and being blacklisted for asserting boundaries. 'We get cheques after three months - that too, after begging people for our own money,' she said. Her refusal to conform, she believes, led to deliberate exclusion. 'Pages were paid to troll me. Directors would call me into meetings just to comment on my image, saying they had 'heard things' about me,' she shared. Even something as simple as requesting a separate room due to her smoking habit was twisted to portray her as difficult. 'If asking for respect and timely payment makes me difficult, then maybe this industry needs to reflect on what professionalism really means,' she stated. Shah also opened up about incidents where her physical boundaries were ignored. 'I don't allow anyone to touch me unless it's part of the scene. You need to ask me. I'm not your property,' she said. She recounted an unsettling moment when a senior actor used a hairdryer to dry sweat and intentionally sprayed it on her face. 'I'm sorry you expected me to take your sweat like aab-e-zamzam raining on my face, but I'm not like that. Ew.' For Shah, standing up for her autonomy, hygiene, and dignity made her a target - but she says she wouldn't change a thing. Youtube: SaharxSupremacy (via @alizehshah Instagram) 'Let Me Live': A final plea for empathy Shah ended her story with a heartfelt appeal to both the public and her peers in the industry. 'An artist, whether junior or senior, deserves respect. Just because you're powerful doesn't mean you can ruin someone's career,' she said. She also revealed ongoing personal struggles. 'My mom is sick. I already have enough to deal with. Just let me live.' Since going public, Shah has received a wave of support from journalists, influencers, and fellow actors such as Urwa Hocane, praising her bravery for speaking out. Fans, too, have rallied behind her, thanking her for shedding light on issues rarely addressed publicly. Instagram: UrwaHocane Whether or not this is truly her final attempt to speak out, Alizeh Shah's voice is resonating. In reclaiming her story, she's sparked a wider conversation - one the industry can no longer afford to ignore.

Taylor Swift sends homemade sourdough bread with handwritten note to Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco

Taylor Swift marked Selena Gomez's 33rd birthday with a personal gift — a basket featuring homemade sourdough bread and a scented candle. The thoughtful gesture was shared by Benny Blanco on Instagram, capturing attention for its warm and playful details. Photo: Instagarm The basket included a sticker that read 'Homemade sourdough' and a handwritten note addressed 'For Selena + Benny,' signed 'Love, Taylor.' Another note added a clever touch: 'It's a loaf story,' a nod to Swift's well-known 2008 hit 'Love Story.' Swift, 35, has been friends with Gomez for years. The two were recently seen together in an Instagram photo Gomez posted on July 20, reflecting on what she called 'the most beautiful year' of her life. The image showed them sitting together in a room filled with balloons, celebrating the milestone. Known for her love of baking, Swift has previously shared treats with those around her. In May, she made Pop-Tarts for Travis Kelce's photo shoot team. Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid also revealed in 2024 that Swift once baked for the team's offensive linemen, making pastries to help her bond with the group. Blanco, Gomez's fiancé since December 2024, is also known for food-themed gestures. Earlier this year, he surprised Gomez with a Valentine's Day gift involving a bathtub filled with queso and a chip trail leading to a message that read 'I heart you.' Swift's bread and message offer a quieter moment of affection and creativity, fitting for a birthday celebration rooted in genuine friendship.
